Speculation: 2013 Offseason Thread Part VI: Buyout Season

I'd love to see the Rangers go out and get one of the following players:

Shawn Matthias
Marcus Foligno
Charlie Coyle

It would be painfully expensive, but we need that type of player badly in the forward ranks.

Matthias would be awesome; perhaps he could be snagged if Florida takes Barkov or MacKinnon.

Yeah. And you also can't go into the season with 70K in cap space.

Briere is still getting way over 2.5, and McD will get Staal money at the very least.

Obviously they arent playing on the 5th line. That was a opening night lineup accounting for injuries to hags and cally that will keep them out for it, i said that below the lineup. Re: the rfa contracts, glen plays hardball with rfas on the bridge deals (see everyone). More flexibility now for more pain in 2 years when they are due big bucks. I would rather that mcd and Stepan get signed long term, but that costs more.

* The Rangers have approximately $13.4 million of cap space for 2013-14 if Brad Richards and his $6.67 million remain on the roster.

You would have to figure nearly all of that would be necessary to sign Group II free agents Ryan McDonagh (expect four or five years between $4.5 million and $5 million per); Derek Stepan (the same term for a bottom line $4 million per); Carl Hagelin (shorter term for between $1.75 million and $2.5 million per); and Mats Zuccarello (two years at approximately $1.5 million).

So essentially, if the Blueshirts opt not to amnesty Richards, this year’s team essentially will be the same as last year’s team, with some tinkering at the edges, (and minus, at least for the first few weeks top-six forwards Ryan Callahan and Hagelin, both of whom underwent postseason labrum surgery).

The Rangers are unlikely to extend a qualifying offer in order to keep the rights to 25-year-old impending Group II defenseman Michael Sauer, who has not played since suffering a concussion on Dec. 5, 2011, and still believed to be experiencing intermittent post-concussion symptoms.

Latest from Brooks.

Amnesty buyouts are dangerous business. The player suffers any type of injury and you're screwed.

Dany Heatley and Martin Havlat can't be bought out because of injuries. Here is another player

The No. 1 buyout candidate is Mikael Samuelsson, who was a non-factor this past season, felled by one injury after another. He has a year left at $3 million, money that could be well used toward funding a top-six forward.

There’s a hurdle, though: As of now, Samuelsson isn’t healthy, and that makes him ineligible for the buyout. General manager Ken Holland said earlier in the week that Samuelsson has been told by doctors in the past two weeks that surgery is not required for the latest injury, which involved a sore pectoral muscle/shoulder. The best the Wings can hope for is that Samuelsson heals in the next 10 days, though it doesn’t take a conspiracy theorist to see that for the player, there would be motivation to fight against being cleared.

Sather refused to discuss Richards's future on Friday. He made a comment about it being AV's day and he wouldn't discuss other things. Then Sather discussed looking to sign Lundqvist to a long term deal. He made a comment about Henrik being a top goalie for a very long time. Sather was asked about the group II free agents. He said they will be re-signed. He refused to discuss Richards who has seven years left on his contract.

Stepan will be a group III in 4 years. 5 years and $20M. Take it and run. Even with McDonagh. The longer the term. The better. McD is 3 years away. Hagelin is 3 years away too. Hagelin will get a 2 year deal and then he will be a group II again in 2015.

I don't see MDZ getting moved honestly. He's a streaky young defenseman who shows glimpses of all-out dominance on both ends of the rink. There are holes in his game no doubt (shot accuracy, consistency, etc.), but those are all things that can improve in the right environment. Most importantly, Staal's eye injury leaves our depth on D a bit suspect. Do we really wanna be forced to stick a kid like McIlrath into the fire if he's not ready? How did that work out for JT Miller this year (besides a handful of games where he was very impressive)? Unless you get offered something ridiculous like Byfuglien straight up, you hold on to MDZ. In fact, you keep the D corps completely in tact for next season. Don't fix what ain't broke.

As for free agency, I'm gonna throw out a name. Patrick Elias. He's 37 yeah I know but the guy has been a consistent scorer for a long time and he's still doing it. Us playing against him for so long, I've always respected his skill. He tends to make the right plays with the puck. Smart. Proven winner. Power play threat. Sather was close to signing him about 5 or 6 years ago I remember. May be risky, but I'd take him for $6 mil over 2 years. May be better than committing 4 plus years at a likely higher cap hit on a broken down Clowe. For a team that clearly has a newfound direction on offense, we may be better off filling our depth with skill over jam.

So is there 2 buyout windows this summer? Meaning they could wait on the Richards decision and seevwhat else can get done w the team?

 I didn't say it, just passing it along. I think until we know what happens with Richards any kind of speculation is difficult.
I know everyone wants MDZ gone, but I am not sure our D will change much, if at all.

I don't think it changes at all. Have confidence since they are young. Yea pp guy would be nice but maybe dz or Moore can pick it up w av

We have another year to buy him out so we will see what the Rangers do

I know they have next summer but for some reason I thought there was 2 windows this. Still think he has to be bought out so they don't have a heatley or havlat situation next

The TSN article was ok and basically told us everything we already know. Three things though;

-They messed up Fast's team in the SEL
-Surprised how Lindberg was only ranked 8 out of 10. He should be #2 or 3.
-Connor Allen #10 prospect? Naw.

For all the people for bieska, another guy on the wrong side of 30(32), with 3 years left. 5m this year, why not just see what the Sharks want to rent Boyle? I see him cheaper than bieska to acquire in terms of assets and maybe sharks would retain some salary. It's also a one year commitment instead of 3 for someone on the wrong side of 30

I agree with you. I meant any changes would be for a 7th defenseman, we really don't have anyone who can step up in case of injury.

I still think they should sign a youngish journeyman DMan who can play minutes and challenge for a top 6. It's all about depth.

Tyson Strachan was a great idea. Zidlickly on a one year deal is fine even though he's older.

Don't assume Staal is going to just be vintage Staal. Dont' assume Stralman will be 100% back to normal yet. Don't assume McLIrath will just step in, Noreau can get a cup of coffee, or that one of Allen/Hughes becomes Girardi 2.0

Don't get caught with pants down and have to use fringe players or waiver wire material.

not sure if this is already posted;

In the NY Post, Larry Brooks writes that the Rangers are unlikely to extend a qualifying offer to RFA Michael Sauer.

He has not played since being hit by Dion Phaneuf on 12/5/11 and Brooks says that Sauer is still believed to be suffering some post-concussion symptoms.

Elias would be a great option, but I really don't see him leaving New Jersey.

Elias would've been a great signing 7 years ago, but instead we got Gomez lol. He was even rumored to have signed here before Lou ponied up. Would've been cool to see an all Czech lineup, that was the era where Jagr, Straka and Roszival ran the show.

Sather, :shakehead

Ryan Whitney? Ew. He was healthy scratched on a weak Edmonton defense that featured former Ranger great Corey Potter on a regular basis.

Hainsey is just very "blah" to me. Doesn't bring a whole lot of what we don't already have.

I'd take Zidlicky on sheltered 3rd pairing minutes. He's going to get paid more than he deserves though.

Just go with what we have. I think I'm one of the few that wouldn't mind Eminger as the full time #6 on the right side. Call up McIlrath when he's ready. Leaves wiggle room to trade Del Zotto for a top 6 scorer.

If Kreider plays like he did in the playoffs, he is a good fit with Stepan and Nash.

I think if we can find a winger to slot in on the second line with Brassard and Zucc/Cally we will be pretty set.

Hagelin and the other of the two Callahan/Zucc on a third line centered by one of Lindberg/Miller

Sign Nystrom for fourth line duties with Boyle and Dorsett.

When Cally and Hags are still out

Kreider Stepan Nash
Clowe/Raymond/TRADE Brassard Zuccarello
Miller/Thomas/Fast Lindberg Dorsett
Nystrom Boyle Pyatt

McDonagh Girardi
Staal Del Zotto
Moore Stralman
Eminger

Let the kids get a chance when Cally and Hagelin return. One of Miller/Lindberg will hopefully prove they are capable. If not, move Boyle up to 3C with Hagelin and Callahan and find a 4C from somewhere.

When everyone is healthy

Kreider Stepan Nash
XXXX Brassard Zuccarello
Hagelin Lindberg/Miller Callahan
Nystrom Boyle Dorsett

Aside from buying out Richards, I don't think it'd be necessarily a bad thing if the Rangers stayed with their current team. It's not a bad team. Well-rounded with depth and an elite goalie to back-stop everything. It hasn't gotten it done in the past, but that was under different coaching and, frankly, every season brings new things. Especially when you have players as young as the ones on this team.

I'd buy out Richards due to the injury risk of amnesty buyouts and stand pat for the most part.

What about Staal, maybe a small + to Colorado for #1 + O'Brien? We pick MacKinnon, they get someone to play with EJ. Colorado gives us their 2015 2nd if he resigns, we give our 2015 1st/2nd conditional on if he signs in Carolina as a FA.

Kreider-Stepan-Nash
Zuccarello-Brassard-MacKinnon
Hagelin-Miller-Callahan
Pyatt-Boyle-Dorsett

McDonagh-Girardi
Del Zotto-Stralman
Moore-O'Brien
Eminger
