Cally can score. I have no idea why people have been advocating giving him 3rd line minutes for years. Certainly on a very, very deep team Callahan probably moves down to the 3rd; but he's been scoring at a decent pace for quite a while (according to TSN, he's good for 22nd in the league in GPG in the last three seasons). I'd keep Callahan to Brassard's right in along with Zucc or Kreider on the left.
Actually, for all the complaining about depth, I see 7 guys who could fit onto AV's proposed two scoring lines.
Nash
Stepan
Brassard
Callahan
Kreider
Hagelin
Zuccarello
Stepan, Nash, and BrassGod are locks... so who out of the remaining four plays on the two-way 3rd line? I'd say Hagelin because his speed means he can create more offense on his own. Callahan has been better on the rush, especially after obviously being taught that deke move by Nash and working on some shifty stickhandling, but needs to play with a good center. This is my lineup.
Kreider - Stepan - Nash
Stepan and Nash feed off each other so well, I can't understand Torts obsession with splitting them all the time. An unleashed Chris Kreider on the left side is exactly what they need to bring some speed to the top line. Stepan should have a field day if AV is going to start them in the offensive zone 2/3 of the time and emphasize creativity instead of dump-and-chase, especially with two guys who can seriously shoot the puck flanking him.
Zuccarello - Brassard - Callahan
I like the idea of sticking these two playmakers (Brass/Zucc) together with Cally, who has a nice bit of scoring touch, on the right. Should really be able to create some room out there.
Hagelin - Miller - Briere (2 yrs/$6 mill)
Speed and good defensive play with Hagelin and Miller, and a nice offensive player with Briere. Perhaps not as obviously defensive with Briere on the right, but I'd like to see some secondary scoring to put the pressure on the other team.
Asham/Powe - Boyle - Dorsett
See it, skate to it, hit it. Nice energy line.
Obviously, if Fast or Lindberg dominates in the preseason like Stepan did in 2010-11, you gotta find room for him.
