Free agents we might want in NYR colors:

Bryan Bickell
Eric Boulton
David Clarkson (**** the rival BS, I'll take em)
Ryan Clowe
Nathan Horton
Dustin Penner
Rob Scuderi
Steven Weiss

I believe Boulton re-signed on the Island.

Outside of Clowe, Scuderi and possibly Bickell if his price is really low, I don't like much on that list for various reasons.

Trading Staal creates a bigger hole in our defense than trading Del Zotto does, IMO. If we're moving him to Carolina, they can pay a king's ransom for him or they can spend the next two years convincing themselves that he'll sign there as a UFA.

As far as Brassard is concerned, the Rangers have been linked to that kid for as long as he's been in the league. I don't think they traded for him with the assumption that he's going to be a fixture on the 3rd line. He's a top-six center in their eyes. 23 points in 25 games as a Ranger. Best player on the ice most nights.

If I was offered a center for Del Zotto, unless it was a young guy who was just too good to let go, I'd probably try and flip that player to another team for a scoring winger.

 2012 8th overall: Derrick Pouliot; Brandon Sutter and Brian Dumoulin

Marc has the eye problem and has suffered a significant concussion, but he's also on a great contract for 2 more years. If he's 100% healthy, he's worth as much as Jordan.

The problem may be carolina's cap situation. Pitkanen makes 4.5 mil for one more year. He's 29, but has missed 78 games the last 2 seasons (Staal has missed 63). I'm not sure what carolina's long term plans are with him.

If they don't intend on re-signing him, then maybe something based on Pitkanen and the 5th overall would work. I know a lot of people want a forward, but we'd be picking a forward with the 5th overall anyway, and we could use the depth on the back end, particularly one that has some offensive ability.

There's also the possibility that carolina just doesn't want to deplete their assets further by trading for Staal. Maybe they will want to wait until next year to see if he's healthy. I don't see a Staal trade happening this year. I also don't think MDZ will be traded, but that's more of a possibility I think.

If they were offered a good young center you take it and run. You allow that player to develop and then go from there. Centers are more valuable than wingers and most centers can play wing.

I still see MDZ being traded this off-season.

I commend you on trying to think outside the box, but no way. Pitkanen is a mess with injuries.

If they want Staal, I want the 5th + Murphy +

It really depends on where that young player is going to develop. The timeline here is important. For the sake of argument, if we land a guy like Mikael Granlund in a deal for Del Zotto, and he's not NHL ready, then is it really useful to us to let him sit in the minors and continue to work out his problems? IMHO, we need an NHL ready talent back for Del Zotto.

I think they have to get multiple pieces back including a pick of some kind. Granlund + d-man/winger + pick would be fine. I like Granlund a lot.

Granlund + Clutterbuck + _______

I have zero interest in any of those players, except resigning Clowe.

Bickell and Clarkson will get overvalued by the market. Especially Bickell, as a player who doesn't play PK or PP (or didn't in the RS. Haven't looked at playoff stats).

Horton is going to get a lucrative deal, bigger than I feel we can afford.

I don't think Weiss is a good fit.

Penner just simply isn't interesting. He never seems to know what role he fills.

Scuderi is yet another LD, which doesn't address anything the team needs.

Carolina has about 6M in cap space with a roster of about 17 right now. They aren't trading the #5 overall for Staal or Tlusty because they really can't afford to from their POV financially.

Which is why I'd love to try and get Trouba out of WPG.

Something like Del Zotto+Boyle for Burmistrov and Trouba would make me a very very happy man.

Trouba definitely won't be moved. We have a better chance getting Bogosian. I think the odds on favorite to move would be Buff.

I am not sure the Jets would trade Trouba alone for that. Kid is going to special.

Believe me I know he's going to be special. I'm a Michigan student, and saw every one of his games live.

That being said, I still take a proven top-pairing d-man on most teams (second pairing for us) d-man for a prospect any day.

EDIT:

Just to clarify, I know it's an absolute pipe dream. It's just literally my dream scenario.

I mean would you move Trouba for Del Zotto?

In their situation I think long and hard about it.

They are a fringe playoff team with strengths on the right side and weaknesses on the left side. They have PPQBs above him with Buff. They need top-flight LDs.

You hope Trouba turns into a top-pairing d-man. DZ already is a top-pair d-man on most teams, and at worst, is an excellent #3.

As much as I love my Michigan program, Trouba has shades of Jack Johnson in him. He was fantastic last year, don't get me wrong, but he just did what he wanted in a rover-type role, similar to JMFJ. expect JMFJ-like growing pains.

I could see a deal around Del Zotto for Byfuglien, but thats about the only RHD player I think would be in play from WPG

DZ is not a top pairing defenseman on most teams. If you DZ on your first pairing, you have a problem. He's played like a #5 for a long time.

While that may be true, I wouldn't touch Buff with a 10 foot pole.

They would NEED something in his contract that states he can't be above a certain weight. He does have everything we need though. pysical D man with booming RH shot from the PP

Is this a joke?

He played the latter part of this year with a sports hernia. If that's what you're referring to, my guess is that you don't know anyone that's had to deal with a hernia and how hard it is to deal with.

Last year, he was probably our best d-man not named McDonagh, and finished 12th in Norris voting last year. That's the 12th best d-man.

Obviously, I'm not saying he's the 12th best d-man in the league, but to say it's a problem if he's in the top 60 (30 teams 2 per top pairing) is asinine.
