Speculation: 2013 Offseason Thread Part V: Streit signs with PHI (4 years, $5.25M per)

Couture signed a long term deal with the Sharks. Curious to know what the value will be at. My guess is 5.5-6.5m per at 8yrs.

The barometer for a Stepan contract.

I don't see how Couture is a barometer for a Stepan contract.

Couture has scored at better than a 30 goal pace in 3 straight seasons. Stepan has had 30 games at an elite level. They're not comparable players.

DZ is an inch and eight pounds lighter than Girardi.

He's really not "small".

So how come he looks so much smaller?

Del Zotto stays if the new coaching staff think they can get his offense up to another level. It's quite possible that they can. Truthfully if they could switch him to the right side and get a decent defensive effort out of him that would be best. That's a bit doubtful. On the left side he's up against two minute eaters in Staal and McD--and Moore is very, very serious competition for him. There's isn't a lot of room there. The right side is where there is a slot open and more room for improvement and for those moving Girardi that would only accentuate a weakness. Not a good idea.

Anyway DZ is not big or strong and not the best skater. He's very good at moving the puck--and that part of his game needs to take a leap forward. Vigneault might be able to help him with that. He makes up for lack of strength somewhat by attacking the puck handler very aggressively--that's when he's playing at his best. DZ's upside as a point producer is somewhat limited because his shot is also not that great and not that accurate. He's no Karlsson or Subban.

ha, if we were going into next season with those 6 as our top 6, i'm not sure there would be a limit to the amount of household goods I'd break in frustration!

I'd hide under my bed until April, really :shakehead. That's what summer classes are for right? hehe

Lundqvist will sign a long term extension this summer. If its 8 years it takes him to age 40. He keeps himself in great shape. Tim Thomas led Boston to a Cup at 37. Martuy Brodeur was 40 when Jersey lost to LA in the finals. Its not now or never. The Rangers make the right moves and put a good team on the ice with Vigneault as coach, they wiil be very good for a while.

Yeah, this is definitely the case if Richards is cut. We get some flexibility to add to this roster.

Looking at us before this season, counting on BR being here, this was basically as good as it was going to get because we wouldn't have had any room for additions.

Logan Couture agreed to terms last night. He can't sign the new deal until July 5. Couture has 1 year remaining on his 2 year bridge contract. 2 years/$5.75M. No terms were leaked on the new contract.

I feel as if Streit's deal is a terrible overpayment based on the last cap which was projected to increase. Now? Horrific terms for an aging guy who i think is going to fall off a cliff soon.

These are the off seasons that win you cups. When everyone severely overpays and buys up lower quality top FA in a bad FA class they kill their own cap space. When an actual good top FA comes around the money you saved not overpaying the top FA's is now available to you and there are less teams around to bid because they already "have that spot filled" at the same cost with a lower quality player and because they have no cap room due to the same signing. it's like what happened to us when we had gomer, redden and drury and couldn't get Kovalchuk.

Ridiculously bad move for the Flyers... couldn't be happier for them:)

Sather is what he is then there is Holmgren. That org. Is going nowhere fast.

These Rangers fans still knock Stepan.:)

Stepan was 13th in GVT. Couture was 32nd.

That wasnt a knock it was a legitamate discussion of the difference in consistency and performance over 3 years. I didn't see anyone deny how good Stepan was in this half season but it does fall short when you compare to LC who did it over 3 years including two full seasons.stepan was great this past season

Congratulations! You are the 10000th poster to complain about this! Your perseverance in holding a grudge is truly remarkable.

Tell him what he's won, Johnny!

FFS, let it go already. All the **** he's done for this team over the years, and on a cheap contract to boot, and you are gonna hate on him for 1 play where he didn't jump in? In case you didn't notice, Girardi and Gabby weren't the only Rangers on the ice at the time. No one else jumped in to help either. Maybe they didn't want to take a 3rd man in penalty when they were fighting to make the playoffs. Crazy, I know, showing discipline.

Hey, why don't you complain about Dubi holding out and missing a couple days of training camp? I haven't heard that one in a while.

It was January 21st in a one goal game with over 30 minutes to play. I think they could afford to take a too many men penalty in that situation

Also which other ranger should have skates in to the aid of Gabby?!?
Oh wait let me guess your next argument is gonna be that they didn't want the face off going outside the zone.... Get a clue guy

You do that to anyone else's star player and all hell would break out .

What do you think brought the team that went to the eastern conference finals two seasons ago together so well... Stand up for one another etc...

Oh wait I forgot , their is no fighting in NHL13 . I'm sorry your right ..

To get back to what I stated . DZ played much tougher than Girardi in the playoffs this year ... He was standing up and clearing the crease much more. MCD even played tougher as well

I think its more the risk than anything else.

Streit is a very good offensive D who very well could play really well for Philly for 3-4 years more.

Ralski was forced to retire when he was 37-38. If Streit is forced to retire at that age, Philly got 10.1m in dead space on the cap. Thats impossible to contend with.

Asking what MDZ's value is, is a two edged sword.

Philly got Timmonen, and zero room for another disaster +35 contract, but gave 5.25 for 4 years to get Streit. Dallas gave a ton to get Gonchar. And so forth.

Philly isn't stupid. They know that they can fill out a blueline with capalbe Grossman's and Gustavssons of the league, but they know they gotta pay to get PP-ability and puckmovement. MDZ is our best PMD's. Philly have Timmonen, we don't even have a Timmonen. Are we going to trade our best PMD to get help up front?

Id do it, but then Id be prepared to give up assets like Kreider, Hagelin, JT Miller and such to get another PMD. You just cannot do one and not the other.
