I don't want any big splashes this year. Maybe plug a hole somewhere, but before we go talking about signing Streit (no), Horton (will be overpaid, no) or whoever else, we need to see who the coach is and what type of system he's going to run. We have some kids that may be ready to jump in this year. Lindberg, Fast, Thomas, Hrivik, along with hopefully Kreider getting an increased role and being able to fill it.

Our defense will get a boost if Staal is coming back healthy. If MDZ can improve his play that'll be huge. And maybe Sauer can come back. That gives you McD, Staal, Girardi, MDZ, Stralman, Eminger, Sauer, McIlrath.

The following year's crop of free agents look a lot more promising. Obviously they won't all reach the open market but there's a chance that some of them will. Malkin, Letang, Vanek, Gaborik(just saying), Heatley, Thornton, Marleaud, Sedin, Sedin, Stastny, Kessel, Pominville, Bergeron, Pavelski, Ott, Jonathan Ericson.

Any free agents we sign this year should be short term and low risk. Maybe see if Linus Omark wants to come back to NA. Not sure what he'd want in a contract, but maybe worth a shot. There just doesn't seem to be much quality out there this year and whatever is out there is going to be overpaid.

Lundsanity30,

I think Callahan is easier to keep.

Hank I think we need to really convince that he's gonna get the support he needs as well as his ideal contract.

I agree, all we have to do is give him more offensive help

Seems like that's what he's mad about. No help. I believe if we prove to him we can support him better, he stays. He loves it here, has a family, etc. So ultimately Sather and co. Need to show that the Rangers can support Hank.

Did people really think Streit was going to sign for sub-5M and less than 3-4 years? That's just not how UFA works. Economics. Ditto Weiss, Horton, yes Clowe too. All will get paid relative to their HF perceived value.

There will be a team to take a "big $" risk on all of them. Only takes 1 team. Yet I still read lots of offseason blueprints with one or more of the above at 3Mish for 2 years. It just doesn't happen like that. Especially not with this year's class.

with term limits and marginal adjustments allowed year over year, hometown discounts are a thing of the past.

One has to look no further than the deal Getzlaf and Perry got to stay in Anaheim.

There was no discount given to that franchise, why would Hank, Cally or any other Rangers player do that for us?

Lundqvist will get close to 8 and Cally will get be a shade over or under 5

Girardi could be in the 4.5-5.0 range

Well, if half the board has their way, he won't see it this year, not that I care either way, just from what I read... So I'm not to sure how he'll take that.

Also,
This team needs a major offensive overhaul centered around Nash, there shouldn't be one player outside of Nash considered "untouchable". Hate to keep going through these changes, but honestly, we've been stuck in 2g a game mode for what seems like 5 yrs...Just not enough creativity and size...This team needed a big time change in identity a few years ago, they accomplished that by building a hard working team (for the most part) that just doesn't have the skillset to score on a consistent basis.

I guess I have concerns amount the depth of the D IF McIlrath is not ready and we were to trade MDZ.

The Rangers need to bring in a Dman for the power play, so there will be a new face back there anyway.

Malkin's a UFA after next season. If I'm Sather, I call Shero and offer virtually any 3 players (2 forwards and 1 Dman) for Malkin.

Why? What if he doesn't resign? Then you wasted assets. Could just take a run at him IF he hits the market.

Right, and neither of those are huge raises as people believe they will be.. Cally is 4.275 right now.. Hank is just a shade under 7 mil right now. Neither of those are huge raises.. I also don't think of Girardi as part of the "core"

you would offer stepan, nash and mcdonagh for Malkin? Thats probably what it would take to get Pitts to trade him to us.

kind of like what we did for Nash?

killed our depth

not true, Rangers still had cap space to burn (see addition of Clowe) last season after the Nash trade. Sather banked on Kreider and torts actually playing him, and pyatt/asham replacing prust/feds/etc.

I know people will say he's gonna be overpaid (and probably right), but does anyone realize that Horton has played in 34 career playoff games and has 32 points? He's another Callahan except better offensively.

Yes, Malkin + Nash = instant cup.
See: Malkin + Neal (and Crosby)

we don't need Malkin. We need 4 great lines
