Rangers have a huge investment in Rick Nash. 5 more years. Nearly $8M cap hit and annual salary. He scored all but one of his goals from the left side. Callahan is a right winger. His contract is up next summer. He will want the $5M plus he wanted in 2011. The Rangers can't have him on the 3rd line making $5M.

If Slats got green light from Nik Bäckström (the goalie) agent on the afternoon of 5th July, would you do Hank for Yakubov, Pääjärvi and whoever EDM took with the 7? ;)

Sign a bought out LeCavalier for 5m per 2y.

Kreider-Brass-Nash
Hagelin-Stepan-Callahan
JT Miller-Radulov-Dorsett
Pääjärvi-LeCavalier-Zucc
Staal-Strålman
McD-Girardi
MDZ-Moore
Bäckström

Tell that Mirriam Webster women to link my post for a new definition of #depth.

;) (j/k)

huge fan, first post here...

Welcome! Overall I don't think that trade for Ryan is terrible, the stopping point is likely that Anaheim already has Fowler, they probably don't want anything to do with MDZ. That and a first next season probably isn't anywhere near enticing enough, even with Miller added in.

But at least your proposal isn't as crazy as others here. :-)

Rads could center, but we aren't getting him.

RW is along with G and LD not a priority for us in any way or form.

We need PP help.

We need an offensive punch from the blueline.

Yak would be a huge get, don't see us pulling it off with MDZ as the center piece. Not exactly the d-man EDM needs, but to never know.

thank you just looking for some scoring help, a high school kid that always goes to games would like to see some goal scoring. also think we could use a big stay at home de to help clear the net

Come on. Come on, here.

You're yanking our chains, right? Neither of these players should even be in the realm of untouchable. That's pretty much saved for Henrik, McDonagh, and Stepan at this point.

I said to me, meaning I personally wouldn't want to give them up, lol.

Trade Del Zotto for equal value. Why is that so hard to understand? Get value in return. DZ is a very good player.

Look at the Rangers roster and the number of players up for new contracts in the next 13 months.

http://capgeek.com/rangers/

Compliance buyout Richards. Torts wanted him here. Richards came here because of Torts. Sather terminated Torts last Wednesday.

Re-signing the 2013 and 2014 group IIs will not be cheap. DZ is up for another contract in 2014.

Re-signing Lundqvist,Callahan and Girardi will not be cheap.

Make an addition or two.

Even with the 2014-15 cap going to up to say $67M,it will be very tight.

The Rangers need to change the team. Look at Chicago and Boston.

Been saying this for a while.
If you guys won't listen to me, then please for love of the team, listen to RB.

Probably McDonagh+

Unfortunately, that's what it would take, and I don't recommend it one for one.

This is the comprehensive deal I came up with, and if need be, the mods can split it in half to make it less "outlandish", if we assume mere total # of assets involved = automatic outlandish.

I posted the following at the big board, for everyone's convenience here:
--------------

Well said^. Rangers in similar boat; no immediate need, but must make adjustments for cap, etc.

The premise of the OP is that Oiler hierarchy WANTS to assure PLAYOFFS this year, not just build to a stronger team that will blossom all at once and be a real powerhouse 3+ years down the road.

You may not be able to win it all now, but you want to all least be reasonably sure to get in for starters, and see how far you can go.

----

Assuming you yield to the premise, you must be more flexible about value. When we offer value for Yakupov, you can't say Gagner. While they were exhausted because of the stupidity of the Torts system, which thank God NY does not have to deal with going forward, the blunders by NYR D in the round w/Boston does not undo all their good play before.

You have constantly demanded McDonagh.
McD is more valuable to us than a single top 4 F, so no.

However McD can be had for the correct overpayment AND ONLY SOME VARIATION ON WHAT ESSENTIALLY REMAINS THAT OVERPAYMENT
which can obtain your objective and result in a win-win.

However, you must stop attempting to overcharge the premium for Yakupov (who legitimately DOES command some premium, just not quite what you guys usually ask) and realize in the following, McDonagh is the premium piece commanding most/best return....

PROPOSAL:
McDonagh, Girardi, MDZ, Brian Boyle, Christian Thomas, three 3rd picks 2013
for
J. Schultz, Yakupov, Marancin, Klefbom, Gernat, Pitlick, and Oilers 2013 1st (7th overall)

analysis:
Oilers get 3 count em, THREE top 4 Ds replacing only 1 the other way. Including one who is Norris calibre. Thomas is 2nd round value, legit skills, only ? is his height, not his heart. Boyle, free of Torts, will have better year and is good 3C/4C, nice D, good FO. Three thirds in a deep draft. 8 total assets obtained.

Oilers still have firepower, and will be improved in bottom six. Loss of potential and futures, but improve on current picture except as to scoring by Yak, but again, EDM has firepower. EDM gets proven D, EDM wins.

Rangers do better on cap, a material consideration of the deal, convert Girardi into J. Schultz, have three nice prospects (former first rounder Klebom, second rounder Marncin, 5th rounder Gernat) who will contend for second/third pair positions. Pitlick, like Thomas is no sure thing, has less overall skill, but good speed, decent possible upside, eventual replacement Boyle, and the 7th overall pick. Total 7 total assets obtained.

Rangers either have great pair w/MStaal JSchultz or, trade him + to Canes for 5th overall +. Rangers then go to FL and ask if 5+ & buys you the 2. If no, is added affordable; if not enjoy 2 high picks, if yes, take McKinnon or Jones.

For purposes of this, assume that scenario and AVs take McKinnon, cause Roy likes him more.

Then

revamped Ranger D:
Moore Jones
Klefbom/Maracin Schultz
Klefbom/Maracin Stralman
Gernat McIlrath

+ add Yak to top LW

Rangers younger, better cap w/ELCs, improved scoring
Rangers also win.

win-win

Been saying this for a while.

yet when people like that become available via trade or FA, Ranger fans ***** and moan about overpaying or not , wanting to give up talent.. can't have it both ways

I don't know what's worse, that people want to trade Del Zotto/Zucc for inferior pieces or that salary is the only thing keeping people away from wanting to bring Clowe.

The reason people want to trade MDZ is the Goldilocks effect... most feel that he's somewhat expendable (especially now that Moore has been aquired) and he has value to other teams. It's a better thought than trading our crap for amazing value.

Clowe is a different story. He's now suffered two concussions in what? 3 weeks? He HAD value, we gave a good ransom to aquire him, but bringing him back requires upping the ransom again (another 2nd). It's not a good gamble. Most people feel cutting him loose, saving the 2nd and the $ he will command and aquiring someone else.

If you give another 2nd, resign Clowe to what will undoubtedly be a large pricetag and he plays 30 games next yr. what's the damn point?! Aside from trying up valuable cap space and crapping away yet another pick.

if Yakupov is a real possibility I'd pounce on it. I'm kinda iffy about giving up Kreider or Lindberg, to me they're untouchables right now. I'd definitely do DZ+Blue Chip Prospect+ for him.

Edmonton has a glut of young, offensive talent. They need Brian Boyle. And with Lindberg coming in as a touted defensive player, let's move MDZ, Boyle and a prospect (Thomas, St. Croix, Noreau) for Yak.

That changes the look of the Oil and helps us for sure.

I don't think they let go of Yakupov to be honest with you. Giving up Kreider and Lindberg are no go's. good call Billy.

The problem in my mind with trading away DZ is that he is still a defenseman. And while we see that he is a mental midget, it leaves somewhat of a hole in the lineup.Everyone is then bumped up a slot. Leaves the 6/7 iffy with guys like Emi, Hamr, Mcilrath, etc.

how about loui eriksson dallas always seems to be looking to get younger and this guy always puts up numbers, maybe dz miller thomas 2014 1st? a lot but solidifys top 6. also wanted to know if anyone has an idea for a big stay at home de to clear the crease if mclrath is not ready and shouldnt be rushed

I really like Yakupov. He is going to be a dynamic scorer in this league but I may be more inclined to move MDZ for Burmistrov + WPG 1st and then move Boyle in a seperate deal to recoup assets.

I am leery of making (3) huge trades in a matter of 1 calender year

A team that finished 6th in the conference and lost in the second round needs to make some changes. Wow. What a bold, provocative belief. Please tell us more; preferably how Paul Postma will factor in.

+1

Too much of that us screwing us up. I've lost knowledge on Burmistrov over the years but IIRC he's still a pretty good and effective player.

He is anoter RWer. Fast, Callahan, Nash, Miller all RWers. (I still see Miller as a winger).

If they move MDZ it has to be for a couple of pieces that can be here long-term. Their depth sucked this season and people want to move 3-4 assets again for 1.

Not to mention he's gonna be 31 by the start of next season and while that's not old it is for a player of his play style. Guys like him decline early and decline fast. Look at Drury or Morrow. If this was the Clowe of five years then I would have a whole different view of this and I'm sure a lot of other people would as well.

If the only way Callahan resigns here is if he's making 5M+, then I hope they let him walk.

Giving him that kind of money with I'm sure at least 4 years would be absolutely asinine. He's another shoulder injury away from being Chris Drury 2.0.
