We find a way to land Carey it'll be a good step towards not having a problem with the power play in future.

@TSNBobMcKenzie
College UFA 6-foot-8 D Andrej Sustr will cull list of 20 to 25 interested NHL teams tomorrow and Friday, likely to sign by weekend.

Scouting report on Sustr

Still, Andrej is versatile. It's easy to make a comparison to Zdeno Chara based on size and everything - he's not Chara - yet like the Boston Bruins captain he can play in all situations.Nebraska-Omaha head coach Dean Blais had Sustr on the top pairing, penalty kill and power play where he's noticeable. Being able to step into any situation means more options at the next level; wherever the junior blue-liner signs.

That's important because Sustr isn't as offensively gifted as other undrafted college defensemen. He's still raw. Although he led the Mavericks in points by a defenseman, Sustr isn't as big on pinching compared to other Omaha blue liners. He chooses his spots. Sustr can use his powerful slap shot to overwhelm WCHA goalies when needed but it is not a weapon that is overly relied upon.

At his best, Sustr is a two-way defenseman who uses his size well and is physical. It can be a detriment; one of the games I watched him play live this year saw the defenseman called for 3 separate penalties. At. his worst, Sustr is a raw player who isn't a great skater and is relies on his physical gifts. In reality he's somewhere in between the two (there is a reason he was passed in the draft). Few players, however, have the gifts Sustr does and the foundation is there for the 6'8" hockey player to further develop into a role in the NHL.

I watched about half a dozen Nebraska games this season, I thought he stood out at both ends, though he was inconsistent at times. I thought he chose his spots well when pinching on the rush, and buried his opportunities, kid has a cannon at that size. When he pinched along the boards he definitely took some chances that cost his team.

Overall you can't ignore the physical attributes, RH shot, as well as his bump in play since he's been draft eligible. Like two worlds really, with hopefully more room to grow at 22. Most Dmen from the 2009 draft are still toiling in the minors, finishing College, or just starting to realize their potential as a Pro.

I'm really hoping we can get one of Schmidt, Sustr, or any of the goalies like Hartzell, Olkinoura (I think that's the spelling?), or Grosenick. Eriah Hayes isn't bad either. Same with Carey.

I think I would lean more towards trying to get a defenseman like Schmidt or Sustr considering the glut of forwards they have already. Outside of Noreau, Skjei and McIlrath they have practically no defensive prospects. Maybe Andersson but he is across the pond.

I agree. Though getting one D and one forward would be nice. With the addition of Nicholls I'm afraid we won't be getting any of the forwards, but maybe that means we go after one of the top guys, Schmidt I'm hoping.

Slats goes through Europe and other minor leaguers more than he does signing College players.

Yeah with the signing of Nicholls I don't see the Rangers grabbing any other forward. Schmidt is my No. 1 choice and I'm absolutely fine with Sustr. I would say DeKeyser too but he'll probs go to Detroit. I don't know why Sather doesn't really put a lot of effort into to NCAA. Although he has been doing a good job finding guys from Europe. But in all truth I hope we get a good goalie. I've stressed it all year . Our goaltending is pretty bad even though Missiean and Talbot have been playing well. I have no belief in Stajcer. None at all.

Stepan Hagelin McDonagh (although traded by Habs) played in the NCAA.. as far as UFA NCAA players he did sign Tommy Grant :sarcasm:

Eh, Gilroy and Tommy Grant were NCAA guys. Cam Talbot was a decent signing. Going back, Thomas Pock, Greg Moore. I think we sign our fair share of college guys; we just don't sign the right ones.

Yeah, I think that's the important bit. Grant over Read. Gilroy over Bozak. Then again, there's nothing to say that the Rangers simply missed out on these guys because they chose to sign elsewhere. Everyone is offering max ELC's, so it all comes down to where the kid wants to be.

I don't think the goalie situation is as bad as it has been. Talbot is looking good. Missaen has looked good as a rookie in the AHL. Stajcer has been hot and cold but when he is hot he is on fire. That's (3) goalies who are pretty good. Not sure where a goalie would play if they signed one.

Andrej Sustr said Wednesday that he has narrowed his list of potential NHL organizations to five or six and hopes to make a decision within the next two or three days.

Sustr, the 6-foot-8 defenseman who just completed his junior season at UNO, had long been expected to depart for professional hockey once the season ended.

“I don't want to sit on it too long,†he said. “I want to go somewhere and start playing and adjusting.â€

“The first couple of days (this week), my adviser said he got at least 20 calls on me,†Sustr said. “I've kind of narrowed it down every day to a certain amount of teams and I talked to about 10 teams' (general managers) over the phone. I'm just looking to see the best fit and opportunity.â€

It doesn't seem starting the clock on the ELC this season is a requirement for Sustr. Maybe his agent has a different thought about that topic.

78 -- Luke Johnson -- C
72 -- Blake Heinrich -- D
49 -- Michael Downing -- D
51 -- Keaton Thompson -- D
83 -- Zach Sanford -- LW

All are NCAA-bound. Downing is going to Ann Arbor. Johnson and Thompson are going to NoDak. Heinrich I believe is going to Duluth and Sanford is uncommitted.

Barring any trades, the Rangers may have five picks between the 50-80 range (based off the current standings and the chance they dont make the CF)

I wouldnt be surprised if they draft at least two of these kids. Johnson has Kreider's skill set and the height but not the muscle. Downing might be gone by the 50s but he's a lot like McDonagh/Staal in that he can skate and shut guys down.

Button, as usual with his CHL bias -- has only one in his top-75 (Thompson at 38)

Nice get for TB. Yzerman keeps doing good work. I know their team isn't performing up to expectations again this year, but I think he's been doing a more or less good job behind the scenes. It will pay off eventually. Still not sure about the Carle signing, but we'll see.

An update on some Atlantic Canada FA's ...the two fellows from the PEI Rocket finished 1st & 3rd in the QMJHL scoring . Ben Duffy won the scoring race 109 Pts...and his linemate Josh Currie 105 Pts finished 3rd . Currie potted 49 goals . Currie will drop the mitts and was team Captain and also scored 8 SH goals and had a few Gordie Howe Hat Tricks .

Another undrafted player I had mentioned ....Darcy Ashley was awarded the hardest working player in the league and finished with 78 points . He is also a small guy...but nasty to play against...and has great wheels and durability...missed 3 games over 3 years...impressive given his size and style of play and also was a + 44 playing behind Drouin , Mckinnon and Frk in Halifax .

Personally...I would have a peek at Ashley...who should get noticed in the Q playoffs and the Memorial Cup . He had a great season in Halifax....and might be a great agitator extraordinaire down the road . Could be a Conacher type of guy that TB found . He will need some more muscle to make the next jump .

can't see any other reason why he would sign there.

Conacher situation definitely gave the Bolts some credibility.

All About Schmidt for the Rangers now right?
