2013 Free Agency & Offseason Thread II

I post what I hear. I haven't any control what things do or don't happen. I never have and never would say otherwise because it is simply impossible.

I can tell you with certainty that these things don't happen in a vacuum and that things can and do often change. I just pass along the things that I either know or at the time expect to be true.

I don't know why Iggy got you going but I wrote what I had heard which was right when I posted it. As it turned out I wasn't the only one who ended up hearing the same rumor. I wrote "Iggy to Dallas" on 7/3.

I posted what I had heard prior to any deal happening so obviously when it changed at the last minute what I had heard was no longer plausible.

That said it was widely reported later that Iggy was indeed about to sign with Dallas. Then later he ended up signing in Boston. Again, it happens. It was also the truth.

I find it interesting that Iggy did the same thing at the deadline when he signed in Pitts after it had been announced that a deal had been made sending him to Boston but only in that it shows how quickly things can and sometimes do actually change.

So like I said, I post what I hear. Sometimes things happen pretty much the way I hear them and sometimes things change and end up very much differently. Either way I am just passing along what I hear. You can take it or leave it.

Whichever you chose doesn't matter.

I think Iggy's team was just using a Dallas offer to make a team he actually wanted to go to bid up.

One thing I'm really curious to see is if Lombardi offered as much as Chiarelli, whether or not he would have picked us over Boston. I know Boston and LA are in the top 3 in the NHL and were in his top 3 too. We were on his rumored list again after turning him down last year due to lack of cap space.

We have both things Iggy is looking for...#1 centers and a Cup caliber team.

Despite the prospects of not improving the team via Free Agency, I am really pleased about 3 things this off-season:

1. Getting Voynov under a longterm contract at a bargain price.
2. Getting Frattin - I think he will surprise many and be productive,
adding speed and scoring more goals than King or Penner could
on second line LW.
3. Getting Zykov in the draft.

and a 4th: Kitsyn back in North America!

Not a big deal but I am a little sad to see some of the Stanley Cup team starting to leave. Time waits for no man I guess. Least we got a full season with that same roster.

Lets go Deano, sign Holloway or Brunner and be done with it.

I do not understang why boston wouldn't give NH 5.3 but give iggy 6, seems NH would have been better signng.....maybe it was term and this is why iggy changed his mind, there was no money until after NH left........................count me in as one who enjoys you TG from your evaluations of prospects to what ever you can share when you hear something, sorry you haven't been perfect predicting the future, I for one thought 2012 was it especially after we won the cup, still have my pf flyers and a ticket for the MOTHER SHIP, y2k preparedness kits ,well you know what I mean lol

Sounds like Horton WANTED to leave. I guess he didn't like Boston...which I don't get. Boston is an amazing city but apparently he wanted to live in a smaller place. But someone WILLINGFULLY moving to Ohio makes me question Horton's intelligence.

I think you could be absolutely right about Iggys people using Dallas to drive up his price. I haven't any idea if that is what happened but it does happen often enough to where it sure could have happened in this case too.

I wonder where we fit in with Iggy a bit too. It will be interesting to see what happened once things settle down.

Thanks for the kind words. I also don't mind the criticisms so long as they aren't too personal.

I absolutely get more from the people who post here then I put in and think that we have a great and smart group here at HF. I get allot of posting here and learning from others.

Hortons situation is one of the crazy things that happened yesterday. During the CBA negotiations the ramifications of having compliance buy outs were brought up. I remember their being a benefit for the teams that don't use their CBO's as part of the deal at the time.

That of course isn't what happened but it is what I remember hearing. That said had they NHL and the NHLPA stuck to the rumored bonus for the teams that didn't use their CBO's (I remember it being a $3m add to their cap amount more or less) then yesterday is fair enough for everyone to where it isn't a big deal.

As it sits the Kings and any other team who built their teams correctly and didn't need to use a CBO end up being punished. You could argue that we had the same opportunity to use a CBO to make changes to our team but then that doesn't allow for the fact that our team was built correctly so why should we need to use such a thing.

Oh well in the end it will be interesting to see how this all shakes out but it sure looks like teams who signed players to ridiculous contracts got a great chance to make up for past mistakes yesterday and the rest of us got to suck eggs.

We're not.

We lost Penner and gained Frattin, who equaled his production in less games. We lost Scuderi. We're getting Mitchell back.

We're fine.

I think it's a fair point that we're not better or equal to the Cup winning team, though. The cap part was out of Lombardi's control, so we can't blame him there, but it's true.

Scuderi and Mitchell > Regehr and Mitchell (if we even get Mitchell back).

Frattin had a few games of hot shooting (over 16%) last season, and hasn't established himself as a regular top six player in the NHL. So I wouldn't count on him being an upgrade for the second line yet.

Bernier > Scrivens.

It is what it is--all teams have to go through some roster turnover--but I wouldn't say we're as good of a team as of now.

We still have a good core. But the status of Mitchell and our left wing situation still worry me.

Ofcourse, that is natural, and we all feel that way. But I think the Kings may have gotten a little to attached to some people on that team, to the detriment of the overall team going forward. Look at Chicago and Boston, both have already made significant changes because even though they won, certain players didn't fit in with the cap or the attitude of the team.

Plus, you need to factor in complacency setting in if you just keep that roster together.

lmao the guy also said he chose #8 because when you turn it to the side it means "infinity".....

Am I the only one surprised that the Leafs only gave Bernier a 2-year deal? I thought he was gonna get a lot more than that.

Heard an interview with JB on XM soon after the trade. They asked him about the contract and he said he was looking for something short term. I'm guessing he wants to get to free agency.

Pretty much prove that he's a legitimate top starting goalie then bust the bank on the next contract, whether it's with the Leafs or not.

Personally, I found it interesting that he makes quite a bit more than Reimer (1.8 million).

Which isn't really the case with the Kings.

I know it's all about Stoll, but who didn't fit because of the cap or attitude? Outside of getting more attached to Scuderi by giving him a lot of money, he wanted to leave for personal reasons, just like Horton did in Boston.

Last summer the cap didn't mean anything, so the Kings could keep their team together. Penner even took a decrease to stay. Although Stoll did not, and he's target #1. I'm sure if the cap didn't mean anything this summer, Chicago doesn't give away Bolland or Frolik, or lose Stalberg for nothing, or at all.

FA went like I thought it would, tons of teams overpaying for guys that are not worth their contracts.

Glad Dean stayed out of that mess....Horton at 7 years ? Iggy at 6 million ? Jesus

Shultz could end up a steal, if the guy finds his game again under Sutter.

Shultz is only 27, not like the guy is over the hill plus he is big with a long reach.

First of all, love your posts and always appreciate your insight into prospects, and also rumblings from the team/league.

Would be nice if teams that used a CBO had to absorb a small percent (25-30) of the buyout against the cap OR teams that don't use them get a cap bonus equal to the league's average buyout.

Let's not forget though that the end result of keeping it together was that the Kings made it to the Conference Finals, which is actually farther than a lot of the other defending Stanley Cup Champions have gotten to in the season after they win it all.

if clarkson and horton are getting this much money i think if we get brown for 5 mil per as a hometown discount were getting a steal... hope its around 4.8 for 8 years or something though...If brown reaches UFA at this rate someone will pay him 6+ per
