2013 Free Agency & Offseason Thread II

But that still all counts toward the cap which we don't have the room to do
There's a bonus cushion of 7.5% of the cap's upper limit ($4.8225 million). Teams are allowed to exceed the cap by the bonus cushion. If said bonuses are achieved, then the team would be penalized against next year's cap.

So say a team with $3 million in performance bonuses is over the cap by $2 million. If at the end of the year $2.2 million of those bonuses are achieved, then the team would be penalized by $1.2 million against the following year's cap.

It's my money and I want it now!

Or that other one - you got the pink, we got the green! So much innuendo...

Fair enough. So we can all agree then that no matter what ANY player says, it's ALWAYS about the money??

So no chance Brown would do this to stay in LA? He just wants to get paid no matter what?

I'm not so sure.

Would not shock me, but I see his number in the rafters.

We actually have about ~6M in cap space. Of course we still have to re-sign Brown and Greene but Willie Mitchell comes off the books next season anyways. Kind of upsetting we don't go after someone like Mason Raymond. The kid has speed and potential, plays on the LW and has scored 25 goals before. I hope Lombardi is kicking tires on him

We do not. Five of our regulars are unsigned.

I figured it was something along these lines or the player might think the team would go back on their word if they get injured that first year. But I'd do it if I was in a situation like LA is right now. We lost to Chicago because our top two lines didn;t have enough scoring. Yes the Kopi line sucked but the Carter line didn;t even have a chance with King and Toffoli on there

But the player wouldn't do it, so the whole idea goes nowhere.

The Kings lost to Chicago because they couldn't score. Yes, obviously the Kopitar line, at least two players on it anyway, did nothing all playoff long. Sooooo...if the Kopitar line, and especially two players on it, scored more, the Kings don't stand a better chance?

There's a salary cap. You're only going to have so many scoring forwards. If 2/3 of your top line isn't scoring, it's tough to win, it doesn't matter what team you are. Look at Pittsburgh against Boston. That Quick gave up a couple bad goals when the Kings couldn't score didn't help the cause either.

If there's nothing cooking trade-wise (I can't help but think that there is something being worked on) and he's willing to sign on the cheap then I *guess* he wouldn't be a bad addition...

But for whatever reason he makes me think of Craig Johnson and Russ Courtnall, which conjures up bad memories of the post-bankruptcy teams of the 90's like a PTSD induced flashback.

Not only that, three of them (Muzzin, Martinez, and Nolan) are arbitration eligible. Not sure if any of them have filed for arbitration, but if they do (or have already), Dean has to keep in mind they could potentially receive larger raises than are built into the CBA for RFA's. Everything is not as clear as internet hockey experts believe after there first visit to Capgeek :sarcasm: Add in the uncertainty of Mitchell's health (I have a feeling he will be playing), and things are clear as mud.

I'm perfectly fine with Dean sitting still on the free agent front today. This past week there has been way too much stupid money spent on a lot of players that don't deserve it. Next year might be better but this year with the lockout being so near and guys not getting paid, they didn't take discounts at all. Maybe next year their memories will be shorter and maybe the crop will be better.

We always say that and it never happens lol.

And when the time comes we say well, there is always next off season for sure lol.

Am I the only one surprised that the Leafs only gave Bernier a 2-year deal? I thought he was gonna get a lot more than that.

Think they kept it small as a "prove yourself" contract... And also keeping it at 2 years, keeps Bernier as a RFA at end of contract, not a UFA.

I don't get people and rumors. They're just that...rumors. How are you going to have any credibility if your talk shows no truth? It's annoying. People fawn to him and ask him what he knows. When most of the time he knows just as much as we do (nothing).

I post what I hear. I haven't any control what things do or don't happen. I never have and never would say otherwise because it is simply impossible.

I can tell you with certainty that these things don't happen in a vacuum and that things can and do often change. I just pass along the things that I either know or at the time expect to be true.

I don't know why Iggy got you going but I wrote what I had heard which was right when I posted it. As it turned out I wasn't the only one who ended up hearing the same rumor. I wrote "Iggy to Dallas" on 7/3.

I posted what I had heard prior to any deal happening so obviously when it changed at the last minute what I had heard was no longer plausible.

That said it was widely reported later that Iggy was indeed about to sign with Dallas. Then later he ended up signing in Boston. Again, it happens. It was also the truth.

I find it interesting that Iggy did the same thing at the deadline when he signed in Pitts after it had been announced that a deal had been made sending him to Boston but only in that it shows how quickly things can and sometimes do actually change.

So like I said, I post what I hear. Sometimes things happen pretty much the way I hear them and sometimes things change and end up very much differently. Either way I am just passing along what I hear. You can take it or leave it.

Whichever you chose doesn't matter.

Pretty surprised Penner didn't sign yet with any one? Maybe they got talks with him going and really wants to stay. Who knows. I dont want dwight king playing third line. At least sign penner to keep 3 balanced lines. At least Penner > King.

Pretty **** day, I was hoping we'd at least not **** it up, and then DL goes and signs Jeff Schitz. Got food poisoning from Bob's Big Boy, and Holloway hasn't even signed with us. I was hoping that would at least happen since Scuds has left us.

I for one enjoy your posts very much. The behind the scenes insight is rather interesting.

Of course things change! I remember going to bed saying "Damn the Bruins got a little tougher today!" Only to wake up the next morning, check my phone, and then say "LOL he's not winning a Cup after all." Things change, that's the nature of the business. Please keep posting what you hear!

I know many other members feel this way also.

No one wants to overpay for a massive underachiever. He best take a cut and stay here. No true contender will take him on.

Like many Kings HF'ers, I enjoy your posts, TG, not just for the trade rumors (which are terrific) but for the hockey commentary which shows a very astute student of the game. Yours is the first name I look for when I log onto a thread in here because of that insight.
So thanks for all of your efforts, much appreciated.

As i view it we need a new 4th C that is good on faceoffs. Especially if Stoll is not 100%. The best solution would be if he could play PK too and is not a dinosaur on his skates. We lost to many faceoffs last year.

I really enjoy your posts TG. Keep it up buddy! :)
