I want Frattin used more. I really liked watching him when his form improved just before the injury(s). Nolan- Vey - Frattin is what I'd like to see as our go-to #4 line next season, if not sooner (on account of Fraser and Lewis sticking around). I love Lewis but I'm shocked that he's done nothing to suggest he's still needed on the roster. Playoffs can't come soon enough for him.

i would prefer to see that as well. unless there is an absolute reason to play a bigger and heavier 4th line, then Vey should be in there instead of Fraser. the problem with your line is that Nolan looked lost the one game he played LW a few games back. Frattin also hasn't made that adjustment on the LW. the team once again is stymied by the lack of LW depth that fits the role. Clifford would work well here, but that just depletes Richards line currently.

Nolan as I understand it has played more than a few games on the left side and did alright. Even if he hasn't, between Nolan and Frattin, somebody should be able to adjust to the left side in a 4th line gig. Of all of our bottom 6 guys, those are the 3 I think should be given time together to grow into their roles.

And I don't think of Fraser as excelling in a heavier game, so much as I'd prefer to see him get tossed around in place of than Vey. But it's semantics, I agree with the intent.

The problem with Frattin is that he simply isn't better then any of our current RWers. Tyler's taken his spot on the 3rd line and he isn't in the same world as Williams or Carter. So the best he can hope for is if Nolan's, who is a better play at that role, is flexible enough to play on the LW and if he can beat out Lewis.

That's a lot of ands/ifs/maybes.

Did anybody see this article?

The points about Mitchell & Greene are more than valid. Does anybody think DL is looking at long term replacements on defense? Thanks!

good article by Jason as always. everything in the article we've been discussing for weeks now, but clearly and concisely pieced together.

if im DL and a decision between Mitchell and Greene exists, then i go with Matt. younger and doesn't have the concussion issues that Willie has faced, not to mention the knee problems. Matt's recent health issues are also a cause for concern and will no doubt factor into his next contract, to the point that Dean will have to weigh options and the additional 7th D man.

i would still like to see them go after M Moulson, for the obvious reasons but more importantly because he has a very good understanding of the team's culture and philosophy.

he would be a good upgrade in the #1 or #2 LW slot over what the team currently has. he would give the team 4 solid and above average LWs - Moulson, Brown, King, Clifford. while slightly smaller than the usual Kings LW, he also has a bit more speed and definitely a better finisher. he will easily get $4-5M+ offers this summer based on his stats and the market. if Dean offers him, then it will likely use most of the available $$$ he has to work with.

I wonder if DL is looking into Subban. The price would terrify me......

doubtful, at least that is my train of thought. i've seen others discussing it on here though. RFA and standing Norris winner. he would cost a ridiculous amount in terms of compensation to MTL and the salary on top. he will likely earn more than Drew due to the Norris and I can't see DL committing $14M+ a season on two defensemen. that would severely limit his ability to juggle the roster and leave space the way he does.

Girardi though i can see him making a full run to sign him. he would/could be the replacement for Greene, they both play a similar game. Girardi is a bit smaller in height and weight, but is also a bit more mobile than Matt.

ideally i would like to see DL re-sign Matt and get Girardi. this fills the SAH d man they need by not re-signing Willie, while also possibly having Matt's de facto replacement. in 1-2 years then Gravel or Forbort are then ready.

Girardi will likely command $4.5-5.5M on the market this summer. while some are down on his game, let's not forget the high increase of demand for SAH d-men the past few seasons. he also has been injury free since getting full-time duty with NYR, looks like he missed two games a few years ago.

I think DL and Sutter like the idea of having defensive vet d-men to help compensate for our cornucopia of offensive young puck movers.

Just looking at the list:

UFA

Trevor Lewis (sign, speedy depth and PKer). He's never going to be even slightly offensively gifted but his skills on the 4th line are useful. Also winger/center. Tyler has taken his spot on the 3rd line.
Daniel Carcillo (maybe sign. Depth physical guy on the 4th line. Cheap).
Colin Fraser (Sign. People seem to not understand his job. To be scratched most of the season and fill in on the 4th line as needed. That's not a position you want a prospect (Vey) to be in).

The following are problems. Both have had extensive injury history this year and last. Both Green and Mitchell missed over half a season last year and both are starting to show the difficulties of age. Green is younger but not in terms of playing style. That rough physical play is starting to wear. Also both have had concussions this year with Mitchell out currently and for a unknown amount of time. Frankly the injuries may make the choice for DL. We don't even know yet if Mitchell is going to play another year. We need a tough physical d-man, like Green, in the playoffs. He's worth it even with limited minutes but more importantly I''m not seeing all that many decent d-men available to sign. Who would we replace him with? It's a lot of risk and even more risk.... Pitkanen, Orpik, or Markov?

Willie Mitchell
Matt Greene

Ben Scrivens (god knows.)

RFA

Linden Vey (sign)
Dwight King (sign)
Matt Frattin (no idea. part of a trade?)

Hell... lets just rewrite the Tyler Myers rumor! He needs a good coach and a change of scenery. hahah

I do not think Scrivens re-signs. He will likely get a better chance to play elsewhere and for more money. So what incentive would he have to stay with the Kings. I fully expect Jones to be LA's backup next season.

Sign ALL the right-handed d-men :naughty:

.....

Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf is closing in on a new contract extension with the team. It's rumored to be worth around $7M per year over 7 years. Is this a good deal for Toronto?

7x7 is what the rumor has been for Dion for months. With the cap going up as a percentage of cap hit that would be the same as getting $5m against the cap today.
Everyone's salary will be going up. doughty, Richards, Carter and Quick's contracts are decent now but will become absolute steals.
Like it or not $7mil is what Dion is worth, in fact I bet he would get $8MM on the open market.

Kulikov is a top player and would love to have him. but i don't know what they would want for him. If we could get him for picks i am all in

I thought he was on the outs in florida? have things changed? I don't think he is a top player. More middle of the pack wit high potential.
I would trade Clifford for him.
