Not all the prospects I lumped together have an equal chance of making it. Some have a higher chance than others. But Graves is a 4th rounder, meaning on the draft day his odds were 5-7% to make the NHL. Even if he increased this percentage by a factor of 5 in just one season, the odds are still against him. Having good 62 games doesn't put you in position to be a likely NHLer.

This is really ironic coming from one of Duclair's biggest fans on HFNYR, a 3rd round pick.

He could play in the NHL, it's a matter of where he plays and what he does in the NHL. I see good bottom pairing guy.

The Duke was #2 in scoring in the QMJHL when he got injured. He was also viewed as a top prospect at the age of 17, but slipped due to a poor season. Either way, I rated him as a high risk prospect.

Graves had a nice run of 62 junior games. Not comparable.

Nieves looks more like a top-six-or-bust prospect than a bottom six guy.

Why can't Nieves be a bottom-6 player? He has good size and speed, and an ability to play a two-way game. If he develops his ability to make a good use of his size and speed without developing his offensive ability, he'd be a 4th line center.

It is comparable because you used Graves' draft position as a strike against him.

I'm not calling him a blue chip prospect. I'm calling him a guy with a nice skillset for a bottom pair defenseman. He was drafted in the 4th round because his upside isn't very high, not because he's a bad player.

Okay, yes. You're correct--he could become a bottom six player. It just seems odd to me though that you'd label him as a guy with "a chance" to be a bottom six player, when that's really not what his current skill set or projectability suggests he'll become.

Defense is not really game. He's not a liability, but it's not his strong suit. Boo is a great skater that can make slick passes and possesses good offensive-zone awareness. Labeling him a bottom six guy assumes his main asset (offense) fails to develop but his "deficiencies" (defense/strength/physicality) begin to do so. That just seems like a weird projection though.

Yeah, I love the confidence the kid has. A bit of an ego. In a good way.

The MHL is not at all on par with the CHL. It's not even really close.

Not even close? Russians have been coming over every year to play against CHL's best and lately they perfomed quite well.

He's a guy who can play a top 6 role. He just needs to mature and gain confidence. He's a ways away. He's skates beautifully and he's got nhl size.

Another guy that's being forgotten is Calle andersson. He's got a solid shot at an nhl job. He's our only pure offensive Dman in the system. He's got all the tools to play with the puck and there's a spot for him if he continues to develop.

We have no one else like him as a prospect. All our dmen prospects are 2 way guys and really not anyone has pmd potential.

Guys, how does Nieves compare to Stepan?

I haven't seen much of Nieves, but I think he compares much more to Dubinsky if you get what I mean. Nieves is more like a player that is hard to read and hard to get a hold of. Step is much more the polished player with the right center smarts.

Doesnt. Boo is fast and big. Steps is slow and not big. Lol.

I watched a lot of boo in youth, juniors and high school. He dominated with his size and speed.

He's a high end skater and he has really great hands. Can stick handle in a phone booth kinda guy. Good velocity on his shot too. Saw him break glass with a slapper once at the lynah rink in Ithaca ny.

Good play maker and solid skater. Needs to add some muscle cause he's wirey.

Step had really high end hockey vision when he left wisc. He was nhl ready between the ears. Derek is a very cerebral player. If he had boos size and wheels he would be filthy.

Boos gonna be a few years yet. He needs to learn the game and gain size. He's got the frame and the wheels to be a solid top 6 guy.

Does Boo remind you of anyone?

He's kinda like arty was when he was playing for Hartford. Boo skates better but same kinda tall lanky guy with good hands.

Anisimov had higher end defensive skills back then. Boo is similar in many ways but defensively he's a lot weaker right now.

I'm not saying they are the same player I'm saying the tall lanky frame and skating are similar.

It sounds like Arty had a better shot though, no? I saw Arty in real life once. Dude looked 6'7. He's so skinny that he looked freakishly tall.

Naw. Can't really go there yet. Ones an Nhl pro. The other is a kid still learning the game.

I'm not at all impressed with Nieves' consistency, compete level, or dedication to his own end. He gets by on pure skill. Same issues that Brassard has fought with for years. Unless Boo suddenly "gets it" and his head catches up to his body, I'm not sure he's going to be a top-six forward. I also don't think he has the battle level to be a 3rd line forward.

Just my take.

Always thought of Petr Nedved for his frame--skating and passing skills but Artie's pretty much in the same ballpark IMO. Just got to hang with this kid for a while. I'm figuring he's doing at least one more year at Michigan U. and quite possibly his senior year as well. He'll have caught up with his competition by then in terms of age anyway. One thing I would like to see from him is shooting more and passing less.

Andersson was once mentioned in the same breath as Hampus Lindholm in terms of pure talent. I know he hasn't put it together yet, but it's silly to give up on a 19-year old defenseman with the tools that he has.

Dawes did it.

C. Thomas did it.

When I see it against a more physically mature level of competition, then I will get more excited.

As it is, meh

Did Dawes and Thomas do it as an 18 year old? I'm asking. I don't know. And Dawes and Thomas are both undersized. Duke is not. I do agree that it will be more exciting if he scored 50 in the A.

Agreed.

Prospects come along all the time that get you excited. Grachev was a big man compliment to the smaller guys above.

We have two guys in Kreider and MZ where we can all get genuinely excited about about their development. I could even add Hags, Step and McD to that list. The reason being is that they keep improving where the vast majority of prospects fall by the wayside. I consider them prospects because they are still very young and relatively inexperienced at the NHL level.

After years of watching, until I see a progression arch that carries thru to the NHL level, I temper my enthusiasm.
