I guess it's encouraging that despite his poor statistical season, Nieves brings it in the big games

He's second on his team in assists, just one off the lead. He's had some bad luck with posts and just in general. He's looked okay whenever I've tuned in. I don't know, I don't think his season bas been nearly as bad as the statistics suggest.

I think the problem is he's just not been noticeable much at all. I've seen a few of his games this year and he was never noticeable.

In 09-10,THN Future Watch had Ryan McDonagh rated #67 out of 75 and was 4th on the Rangers list. 3 years later the THN Yearbook had McDonagh in their top 50 NHL players and he was seventh highest rated D in the list.

Yeah THN is a publication that really boggles my mind. They had the Rangers dead last in this year's future watch, when in my estimation there are more pro ready prospects for the Rangers than they have ever had since the Step, MCD, Sauer year.

Rating Tronna, SJ, NJ, WSH, and VAN ahead of the Rangers is asinine. When teams ice career minor league vets, and waiver wire pickups for a number regular NHL season games is when a team's farm system has failed to produce.

That hasn't been the case with the Rangers for a few years.

I wonder what McDonagh was supposed to become. He was supposed to be an offensive guy I know, so what's been his one knock until this year in the NHL was actually supposed to be a strength of his.

when he was drafted I think they saw a good skating defenseman who could move the puck and immediately thought "he'll put up a lot of points" except he didn't in college so some of the Habs and their fans soured on him.

We don't have flashy, big name picks.

Simple as that.

If anyone was curious, Kantor's injury is a concussion. I hadn't seen or heard anyone mention that. He's been out for a month and a half.

Buchnevich played in another MHL playoff game. He had a goal and an assist.

You can add Philly to that list as well. I think we're somewhere in the low 20 range (21-23), but to say we're dead last is ridiculous. Skjei, Lindberg, Kristo, Fast, McIlrath, Allen, Nieves (if he grows some balls), Duclair, Buchnevich, Graves, Skapski and of course Miller are all interesting to good prospects. Looking back, I think Clark and Gorton did well last year for what little Sather gave them.

That list doesn't impress me at all.

I like Miller, Skjei and Butchy. I would like to see Duke playing against a more mature level of competition before I get to excited about him.

The rest do not impress me.

There hasn't been much speculation about Brady Skjei's future. Staying in school for his junior year won't hurt him. Minnesota could win the entire thing in April. Does he turn pro if the Gophers win it? Most of the NHL level college players are 3 year players. McDonagh was a 3 year player. Kreider was a 3 year guy. Stepan was 2. Hagelin was 4. Nieves will be 3 or 4. We don't know what the Rangers think because management doesn't talk to the media. A request has to be made to John Rosasco and he determines if its OK. Garden media policy. In the fall of 2009,Cerny had a podcast and Gordie Clark said McD would be ready for pro hockey after 09-10. John Giannone has a MSG network podcast. Hopefully Rosasco allows him to have Gorton or Clark as a guest in the near future. A third of the players in the NHL come from US college programs. Hagelin and Nyqvist played at US college programs and they're Swedes.

Not impressed by Fast or Allen?

That's 4 points in 3 games.

The Russian Juniors are as good as any of the Canadian Junior Leagues. Sure, Canada has more junior players, but they also have 3 leagues (plus some Canadian kids go to college either in Canada or the US), whereas Russia has one Elite Junior league.

This being the playoffs when the bad teams are not participating and everyone tries extra-hard, The Butcher can show what he can do against other top quality teenagers.

50 goals from Duclair should be enough to excite anyone, dude. :)

the thing i like the most about duclair is his willingness to shoot the puck. hes not afraid to fire it. hes a sniper and a goal scorer. hes got some swagger and i like that.

i loved the idea of christian thomas being a sniper. that kinda shot is a gift and he had it. he knew he had a gun and he used it. im hoping this kid has the same kinda shot and mentality.

these days, too many guys try to be too perfect. they are taught to be unselfish and round out their game with equal parts passing, shooting and 3 zone play. thats great and all but when you got it on your blade. bring it. hard.

goal scoring is a state of mind. snipers think shoot first. they are finishers. they make their own breaks. they score some pretty ones and some ugly ones too.

i would love to see this kid be the shooter we so dearly lack in this entire organization.

Yeah, I love the confidence the kid has. A bit of an ego. In a good way.

The MHL is not at all on par with the CHL. It's not even really close.

Miller, Fast, Lindberg, Allen, MCI are all locks, just a matter of how good they will be.

Skjei and Hrivik have a very good chance to play in the NHL.

Duke, Butcher, Kristo are high risk, high return with a good chance of making it, and St. Croix with a low chance.

Nieves, Tambellini, Bourque, Yogan, Kantor have a decent, but under 50% chance to be bottom-6.

Noreau, Hughes, Donnay and Graves have an outside shot at being a bottom pair defenseman.

Skapski is our one decent goalie prospect.

Others are not worth following. Still, we do have a dozen good prospects and another few decent ones.

Nieves looks more like a top-six-or-bust prospect than a bottom six guy. The same for Tambellini. They'd be better lumped in with St. Croix in terms of high upside, high bust potential. Although I think Nieves is quite a bit better than both of them.

It's also too early to write off Andersson and Fogarty.

And why's that? He's having a great year. Playing on the top pairing, playing smothering and physical, and he skates very well for someone of his size. I definitely see good bottom pair potential in him.

Not all the prospects I lumped together have an equal chance of making it. Some have a higher chance than others. But Graves is a 4th rounder, meaning on the draft day his odds were 5-7% to make the NHL. Even if he increased this percentage by a factor of 5 in just one season, the odds are still against him. Having good 62 games doesn't put you in position to be a likely NHLer.
