Stop blocking shots. Its simple. Lundqvist gets paid to stop the puck. Let him stop it.
I think he should stop blocking shots too. Richter's career was ended by a puck hitting him. Lundqvist is too valuable to subject him to that risk.

The Rangers have blocked 3412 over the past three seasons. How many serious injuries have their been? I can remember three: Callahan twice, and Zuccarello once.

About 6% of unblocked shots in that span scored on the Rangers, so if they didn't block any of those shots they'd be looking at another 210 goals or so. That would take their GA/per game over that span from 2.44 to 3.43. Yeah, I think I'll live with Callahan missing 3-4 weeks.

theres an article somewhere that shows that blocking shots isnt as important as it seems..i dont think the #'s pan out. long shots that are easy saves are also usually the ones that are blocked the most.

I'd love to see it.

True. It also doesn't account for the potential for extra shots off rebounds, though. Either way, stop blocking shots and your GAA will sky-rocket.

I'm getting my head around the notion that Nash will be gone for a long time. Maybe permanently. Two concussions in less than a year. Not good

Blocking shots in the final seconds of a game is exactly what I want out of my captain, I can only think of it as a good thing to show the rest of the team. Unfortunately, yes it hit him in the hand but I don't think he was thinking "I'm gonna block this with my thumb".

These things happen...who knows if he doesn't block it maybe it gets through and scores and then we have everyone saying " WHY DIDNT HE BLOCK THE SHOTTTTT???!!!!!"

im sure someone will dig it out.

i think the premise is that most of the teams that block the most shots generally block shots from defenseman, which historically have a much lower chance of going in...secondly, teams that block the most shots tend to have the puck the least, meaning they are being attacked more, and as such, are defending more than the oppoistion so they have more chances to block shots.

so the basic argument was that, if youre a team that doesnt block a ton of shots, youre not giving up much because..

a) youre probably controlling the puck a lot more than the opposition

and

b) youre probably not blocking shots from defenseman which are unlikely to go in anyway.

i think it was something like that.

Yes, the teams that block the most shots are the teams that possess the puck the least. That's a well-known relationship. But that doesn't mean that blocking the shots that are taken isn't important.

Look at how many shots Callahan has blocked in career.

And how many injuries have come from it? 2? 3?

Seriously, look at that ratio. It makes no sense for him to stop blocking shots. You can make an argument that in the waning seconds of 2-0 game it might not be the best time, but Cally isn't going to stop going Captain America on the Puck-Grenade as long as he's in the game; and that's why he's captain.

Not for long. His play is a recipe for a short career. Hes got the heart of a lion but the body of a tennis player.
He doesn't have the frame to sustain the type of play that makes him who he is.
I hope to God I'm wrong, but I just don't see him playing at a high level for more than
2-3 seasons after this one.... at best

If something on Cally ends up breaking down, it's going to be his shoulders, back, or legs. He's not even close to old enough for his bones to be getting more brittle, so his odds of breaking a bone blocking a shot won't increase for a good and long time.

As for his frame, he's listed as 5'10" and 185 pounds. Considering how light he seems to be on his skates, that's a pretty sturdy frame.

If he beings to slow down in his mid thirties, I won't be so surprised, but he's too smart of a player to see that sudden a drop off, barring some sort of Drury like degenerative knee disease.

i think the other thing to consider with blocking shots... it gets frustrating for the offense.. every time you shoot its blocked? then you have to be finer with your plays, maybe pass once too many... it just makes the defensive team tougher to play against.. and thats what you kinda have to do when everyone is so good in the nhl..

blocking shots is just apart of the nhl now... i think you notice it most live.. these guys are so big, there is little room in the offensive zone as it is..

the defenseman cant beat people up in front of the net. so they just leave them.. "front" them and just block the shot before even getting to that man..

Big deal they score a goal.

Messier and Graves played in every major situation for the Rangers from 1991-92 to 96-97. Did they block shots? 5 on 5. 4 on 4. PP. PK. Everything.

The previous coach made shot blocking the first option when it comes to defending. Time for certain players to stop playing with that mentality.

Goals are pretty important in hockey, though. They often decide who wins or loses the game.

Maybe they could bring them back. Put Sather back behind the bench, because the game clearly has not changed since that time.

if were up 2-0 with a few seconds to go....if they score it really doesnt matter unless you REALLY care about having a shutout.

LOL Loui Erikkson training again. Gets close lined at full speed by a 6'8" behemoth and is back in a few weeks.

Our ****ing star player gets elbowed at a stop and we haven't heard jack ****.

Being a fan of this team. :shakehead
