Look at the resume of the Penguins AHL coach

John Hynes

John Hynes is in his fourth season as head coach of Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League.

Over the past three seasons, Hynes has led WBS to a 144-76-4-8 overall record, three Calder Cup playoff berths, three 40-win seasons and the 2011 AHL regular-season championship while being named the 2011 AHL Coach of the Year.

Grad assistant at BU where he played

Assistant coach at UMASS-Lowell and Wisconsin

Then he went to the US National Development Program before joining the Penguins organization

Prior to joining WBS, Hynes spent six seasons as a head coach with USA Hockey’s National Development Team Program, posting an overall record of 216-113-19-9. In 2007, he was a finalist for the U.S. Olympic Committee Development Coach of the Year.

Hynes has enjoyed great success on the international stage, leading the U.S. Under-18 National Team to three medals at the IIHF World Under-18 Championships - gold in 2006, silver in ‘04 and bronze in ‘08.

The native of Warwick, RI was head coach of the U.S. National Team at the 2008 World Junior Championships, and was an assistant coach on the ‘04 U.S. team that won a gold medal at the World Junior event.

The Rangers have Schoenfeld's buddy Ken Gernander. He played for the Wolfpack. Retired and became an assistant coach. He has been head coach since 07-08.

Look at the resumes of the two coaches.

Ideally minor league coaching material should be able one day to be major league coaching material. Gernander is not a threat to ever be a head coach at the NHL level except maybe on an interim emergency basis. The Rangers are spinning their wheels with this guy.

The Wilkes-Barre players in last night's game look like a well-coached bunch. They were all on the same page, knew their roles, and played cohesively. The Rangers could definitely do better than Gernander but replacing him doesn't seem to be a priority or even on the radar.

Big fan of John Hynes, he was one of my fellow hockey camp teammates back in the day at Providence College.

He was also the youngest coach in the AHL when he was hired.

Hynes was a guy I was hoping would at least get an interview for the head coaching job here in NY. He's done incredibly well with WBS.

Shut out AGAIN tonight.

What does it take for that toolbag Gernander to get fired?

It'll take Sather getting fired to get Gernander out of Hartford. The organization is loyal to a fault from top to bottom.

Does anyone know what meat head, I mean Beach did to get a 10 minute misconduct for abuse of an official? Could see that one coming a mile away. What an awesome pick up.

are you implying that he was a bad pickup? please explain why

So to last night's game;

I see Fast came back. How'd he look? Rusty? Hopefully he can get back to form quick. The big club could use him and Kristo.

How'd Aliu do? Was a big fan of his during his draft year. It would be a cool story if he can put it together even as a 4th liner now.

FIRST PERIOD

Dov in the net.

Allen takes a penalty in the first minute, but it's killed off.

McIlrath tries to stickhandle, but looks funny doing it, then gives up.

O'Donnell almost scores on the wrap around, but with the empty net, he fails to put it in. I am not sure how that's even possible. I was sure it's in. It was an empty net with him holding the puck (which was NOT even bouncing) less than a foot away. This is why this team gets shut out every other game.

JAM scores and the Pack are down 1-0.

Another goal was called against the Pack, but reversed after a review. Dov was run into on this play and looked shaken up.

Pack PP. Nothing going.

Allen is closer to the NHL than people realize.

It's pretty amazing how poorly coached this team looks.

Penalty on the Pack. Just as Powe gets out of the box, having killed this penalty, Lindberg takes a penalty with 2 seconds to go in the first.

SECOND PERIOD

GOAL: Alliu runs up along the left boards and throws the puck on the net. It went in because the goalie was just awful on it. Still, it's now 1-1. Fast with the only assist.

Falcons have had 5 power plays, Packers only one.

Aliu fought Craig. Three punches and Craig went down. Big win by Aliu.

Mcllrath crashes an opponent, but his left leg twists awkwardly. Looks to be in pain. Doesn't look good at all, but skated off on his own. He's in the locker room now.

Late Pack PP. Syvret sucks balls. Gives up the puck on the PP for no reason at all, just stood there with the puck looking stupid. This led to a last second breakaway, but Kristo used his speed to come back, dive and knock the puck off the Falcon's stick.

THIRD PERIOD

Hrivik creates a scoring chance by working hard. Bourque with a follow up chance.

Kristo using his speed to create a scoring chance.

O'Donnell fought a Falcon. Extra minor to the Falcon. PP for the Pack. Nothing going on the PP.

Falcon gets a partial breakaway when the Pack defenseman got undressed.

Another PP for the Packers as Parlett is called for a penalty. Syvret can't hold the puck inside the blue line when it was barely moving towards him. Another useless PP.

Bourque creates a chance, pass to Kantor, but he wasn't allowed to get his shot off.

Allen gets a penalty. Falcons with the third penalty in a row. Fast looking good on the PK.

Dov is a good goalie at the AHL level. I wouldn't mind if we signed him next year as our third-string goalie.

Aliu looking good out there... and immediately after I wrote that he created a scoring chance, but Dupont doesn't know how to receive passes.

OVERTIME

Pack get a PP in the OT. About time for one decent PP... but no dice.

Spring gets a PP with 45 seconds to go after Hrivik runs over their goalie. Terrible call because the Falcon D purposely drove Hrivik into the goalie. The officiating is horrendous at this level. Same goalies at the NHL level and there would be a riot.

SHOOTOUT

Kristo: skating straight in, shoots, hits pads.
Falcon: wrister goes in on the stick side.

Hrivik: slow shot on the glove is stopped.
Falcon: makes a number of moves, but Dov doesn't buy it.

Aliu: coming up from the left, goes to the right, the goalie goes down, but Aliu misses the net
Falcon: JAM scores on another wrister.

Johnson: tries to slip it past the goalie, but no dice.

Packers without a win in 9 straight games.

STARS OF THE GAME

1. Aliu: Scored a goal, fought, created chances.
2. Dov: Very good game with 30 saves on 31 shots. Almost no rebounds allowed.
3. Kristo: One of the few creative players on the team.

HM - Bourque: His hustle created chances.

Hey Beacon, Do you know if it was the same knee for McIlrath that he injured previously?

Thanks for the great updates on tonight's game. Sounds like Aliu played well.

EDIT - See now you mentioned it was the left leg in your post. Sorry about that!!
