I for one have been sick of this dance for a long time......

its just a big tease whenever we think that a settlement is coming BAM

something happens I mean it's mid January........how many games can they fit in with a really short training camp? Would there be a training camp?

Random, but..is your avatar Zoot from that old show 'The Tribe'? He looks familiar and I was obsessed with the show when I was a kid, I used to draw on my face and pretend~

and IA this dance is becoming monotonous.

So I read a report the league has stated they'll go to 30% variance year to year so long as the total variance is capped at 60% of the highest season.

Players would be better off sticking with a straight 10% year to year variance no? Be funny if they bit on that after refusing 10% year to year with no cap on it.

hey, fear not. This is not unchartered waters. In fact like directions to put a gas grill together they have the blueprint to have an amazing bleeping season at 48 games.

This EXACTLY happened in 1994-5 and they played the most insane fast paced, balls to the walls hockey I have ever seen in an NHL season and I went to every game that year and from 1983-1996 missed maybe 3-5 games combined.

The Devils won the Cup and the playoffs were great. I'd say maybe 1 of 100 (if that) consider the season a *. I know I don't. They all play the same.

Also, really, 48 games at warp speed or 82 with a bunch of half assed efforts over a long season.

I have even more good news- we are one more day closer to resolvement:handclap:...

Maybe I'm just in a crummy mood about the whole thing, but I have such a sense this morning that the whole travesty is unfolding exactly as the NHLPA intended. Negotiate to the last possible second and take that deal. And that we're all essentially a bunch of freaking idiots to have thought that there was the slightest possibility of anything other than the last second deal.

Think your right Dave, the biggest travesty? I wonder how many people are sitting in a REAL economic tight spot as a result of this garbage?? I`m speaking of course not of the players or League officials, I speak of the businesses that are game night driven, the folks who earn their money on game day/nights etc....

I love hearing the players and the league talk about the fans and how they deserve better yet...........here we are, January 5th and still no hockey and I`ll wager all the fans will see/hear is the BS "Thank You Fans" crud painted on the ice and rhetoric from both sides if/when the games begin

I'd like to hear a rain of boos opening night. And if Bettman thinks he's heard boos in the past, just wait till the next time he is in front of fans. Fehr won't care, I bet he's out of the NHLPA before the summer.

I think Andrew they've done themselves real economic harm this time. I think the fans will be back, but their wallets generally won't be. Nothing I read indicates people are anything but fed u. Not that either of us are in a position to spend a lot of money on the NHL, but I can't see my spending being anything but $0 for the next while - no trips to Boston, no tickets as presents, no merchandise.

The concession stand right outside of the loge where we sit at the Garden has had the same people working there for years. We enjoy seeing them as they are nice folks. They told us last year how difficult it was missing half of the basketball season. They were realy struggling with their bills. :(. I think of them often.

Bettman deserves all the boos he gets. No one really liked him much before so I don't think he has improved his image. Jacobs was starting to get some respect but that will be gone now.

Most of the STH I know will return. We love our B's /hockey . It's always fun to see everyone after the Summer break. Folks will be happy hockey is back but this season has been danaged by this .

I hope folks tip the people who pour their beer and hand them the popcorn. Sure the prices for this stuff is crazy but it is not the fault of the folks working the concession stands. Keep in mind many of these folks have been having a tough time.

If there is a 48 game season, all the fans should double their tips on the $9.00 beer and $5.00 franks. That should "make whole" their revenue for the season.

Many "fans" don't tip at all. :shakehead These "fans" are pissed off about the high prices. They don't get that these people working the concessions make very little.

I usually buy ony a water or soda and still won't buy much but will increse my tip. I hope more fans do the same. Remember folks...the tips don't go to Jacobs.

...but the concession money does.

In order to tip, you have to buy something. I don't think many people are going to be spending money (or to the same level) in the Garden when the season starts, which is another kick in the junk of the employees there.

People will always buy beer. Some folks can't enjoy a game without beer.

With that Cup win, almost all had been forgiven for Jacobs. If he had worked to help facilitate an agreement, he could have owned Boston. Instead, he's leading the hardliners and working to hamstring HIS OWN TEAM by insisting on a $60 million cap.

I prefer to have a few beers during the game. It's not that I can't enjoy a game without beer, but I like beer and I like hockey. It adds to the experience for me. I usually would have 2 or so per game, something to eat. Not sure if I'll be doing that when the season starts up.

I would be really interested to see the concession/souvenir figures when the game comes back.

Meetings with mediator (separately) begin in 1.5 hours.

Must say that what ever happens, a huge debt of gratitude has to go to the mediator. He has brought the two sides this close and I doubt they would be anywhere close to the light at the end of the tunnel without his presence and hard work.

Still heard as late as last night that the PA has agreed to 6&7 year terms on contracts, but everyone else still says that is an open issue. So I have to concede that my information is incorrect at this point.

Yesterday I said OHL may move its trade deadline from Jan 5 to Jan 10 to coincide with a new CBA agreement. I had the dates wrong it's Jan 10 to Jan 15, which is still being heavily debated.

NHLPA can file disclaimer of interest anytime after 6:00 pm tonight.

Late last night both sides said there is some "wiggle room" on the issues that are still unresolved. Let's see just how close the mediator can get them this weekend. There's a good chance they could have face to face meetings tonight.

Don't expect any major announcements today (so as probably not to interfere with USA's gold medal win - if they can hold on here) but they should definitely act on the high that would bring in the USA

Kate...I didn't mean you ;) From what I have seen and know of you hockey would be enjoyable to you even without beer.

I believe fans will start off not spending as much but it won't take long to get back to where the spending was before. ..Maybe not as much with the jerseys and souvenirs at first anyway.

I hope (as Ratty has posted) we all remember to tip the people who work there. It's not their fault and sometimes they feel the brunt of the fans displeasure. I have heard fans give them crap about the prices.

Better yet - instead of buying 3 beers (or whatever you usually buy). Buy 2 beers & tip normal on the first and then tip $9.00 on the 2nd.

In the end you end up paying less than you would if you bought your usual 3 beers (with tip), the vendor gets significantly more money than he would from your tips and Jacobs doesn't get about 1/3 of what he normally would have from you on beer.

Oh I know that! Just sharing my perspective.

I really like the workers that are around my section. I know several by name, and they know me by name. Hell, I've sold tickets to one of my beer guys so his sister could take her son to a game because box offices prices were too high. You're right, those workers do add to the experience...I so wish ushers had dedicated sections like the concession workers do. I think it would cut down on a lot of problems.

They really do add to the enjoyment. We know some of the ushers, Garden ice crew and security people too. Some have been there for years. I saw a couple of the Garden crew at the parade after the cup and exchanged hugs. This lockout has made it tough for all of them.

So you don't blame the players but refuse to buy concessions because you blame the owners and want to "hurt them in the pocket book"?

This argument always seems to confuse me when people are 100% behind the players and 0% behind the owners and use the "not spending my money" argument as a form of sticking it to the owners.

This argument affects the players equally. 50% of what you spend goes directly to them.

There are other ways to financially impact the owners without financially affecting the players - if in fact you are 100% behind the players.
