I guess he just needs to be right. I don't even think they're all that great. They're an overachieving team but they're also most likely better than we expected before the season started. I guess he can't stand the fact that he might have been a bit off.
I have been even harder on my outlook for this team than GAS has. Yes, in some areas they've overachieved. But, he is correct that the results right now are exceeding the actual numbers. There is a lot of positive to take out of what we've seen so far. Kreider, Zib, Chytil, Howden, Pionk, DeAngelo and most importantly, Quinn, are all major high points for this team going forward. But, the rest of the team is rather underwhelming. For all the talk about Hayes, he's projecting to put up 52 points, which, while being a career high, isn't something that screams throw the coffers at him. The defense overall is at best meh, and all GAS is saying is that this team does not have the appearance of being playoff contenders. Admittedly, the league looks less daunting, especially the Metro and Pacific. And, as I said, a lot of good things are happening for the future. GAS's point (and mine) is that be prepared for the downturn at some point and don't be surprised by it. Look, I believe in what we're seeing from both Kreider and Zibanejad is what they can be going forward, but, I'm not about to bet the farm on it staying that way given past history. Right now I would say the Rangers have definitely exceeded my expectations, but, there is still a lot of hockey to be played and the underlying numbers are not in their favor. But, I will reiterate what I've said elsewhere... to me, this season is not about wins, and I have never been on the Hughes or bust train. I want the kids to show growth, I want Kreider and Zibanejad to prove they merit being here for the long term, I want the trading assets to maximize their trade value and I want Quinn to show he's going to have a positive impact on the team's growth. If wins are the end result of that process, so be it. GAS is not the only poster who has expressed those sentiments.
@Edge has been saying the same thing since this process began, There is going to be pain in the process, especially if management adheres to the template they've been espousing.
