Is this going to be the Lundqvist we have all season? Holy crap.. You can blame defense all you want, but when a goalie gives up 5 goals in a period it's time to look at the goalie..

It'd be hard not to do better than he did tonight, but Hank is definitely slipping. You could see it at times during 2015-16 (especially in the POs vs Pitt) Then, last year, he was below par most of the season (although he did play well vs the Canadiens in the POs). It's not that he's fallen of a cliff...it's been a slow tumble over the last couple of years. He'll probably have some good games here & there...but I think Hank is well past his prime and has slipped into mediocrity (or worse).

He was never even given a chance. AV is a factory of sadness.

that's really my problem with AV and I don't quite understand when people say this kid's not ready for the nhl. I can understand if he got 12-15 min of ice time for a few games and looked lost and made mistakes but i mean he plays 10 minutes total in 2 games. Not really fair at all to be benched in your first 2 pro games for simply being a rookie. But that's AV's thing

AV's defensive system is too difficult to execute with any consistency. He needs to go. We also need to get Shestyorkin here next year. Hank cannot carry the load anymore. His bad stretches are worse than they've ever been and are happening more frequently.

It's interesting how quickly the anti Hank sentiment is growing. I was accused of being "one of those people" after voicing some concerns about him on Thursday night.

It's hard to accept reality sometimes but the days of being carried by goaltending are probably over. How does AV adjust?

Spot on. This system relies on goalies bailing out the team... Idk wtf av is going to do if Hank can't play like he did 3 years ago

The only part of the team I'm not worried about is the current offensive lineup. I think we are going to be among the top 5 best scoring teams in the league this season, a top six with Kreids, Ziba, Buch, JTM, Zucc, Nash looks really good, not many teams with a top 6 better than that from an offensive standpoint. And then we probably got 4 30 point scorers from the back end with Shattenkirk, McDonagh, Skjei, DeAngelo, so I think the offense will do really well. Only thing I'm worried about with the offense is the depth. Chytil will probably go back. I don't think AV gave him much of a chance, but then again, he has not looked good so far, and very well might not be ready to play in the NHL. So lets say he goes back, Fast takes his spot after 9 games, we still have Paul Carey in our lineup, we still have Desjardins in the press box, we don't have any obvious upgrades coming from the minors. We can probably patch together a good top 12, maybe if we can eventually replace Carey with Nieves, but we better make sure we don't sustain injuries. If we do, we might be a two or three line team. There are not more than 12 NHL forwards in this organization right now, which is a problem.

Defensively, I'm extremely worried. I just don't think the talent is there to defend. You can question last season's defense, but this team has not upgraded defensively. They've done so in a big way offensively, but defense was the problem with the defense last season, not offense, in my opinion. Two games in, defense has been terrible, and Staal has not been. What happens when he starts to play like Staal? I don't expect Shattenkirk and DeAngelo to defend like they did these first two games, but they are not known for their defense. Thinking they will be is wishful thinking. Smith and Skjei are probably the two who can kind of resurrect the defense from a defensive standpoint, maybe Holden if he can defend like he did early last season. Skjei needs to be our second shut down guy after McDonagh. Needs to be, needs to take a big step. We'll see if he does so. Its asking a lot of him. And Smith needs to show he's capable of being our third shutdown guy, can't trail off as a guy the team considers scratching in a month or two. This defense has good players, but I don't think the offensive/defensive balance in there.

Goalie could be a mess, we'll have to let it play out. If we go by last season and early this season from Hank and Pavelec (along with zero depth in the minors), its looking like we'll have some of the worst goaltending in the league. Maybe not. Gotta hope Hank can turn it around, and Allaire can fix Pavelec's game. Its too early to tell where this team will stand. I think the offense is way too good to be one of the few worst in the league, but I also don't think as of now we are going to make the playoffs. A few changes in the play of some players (Hank, Pavelec, Skjei, Smith, Holden), and we could. On the other hand, a few changes the opposite way (top 6 forward injuries, McDonagh injury), we could be worse than expected.

If that's the case, the Rangers are screwed. He gave up 3 goals against the Avs & 5 goals in the first period against Toronto. If his goals against is over 3.00 and his save % is close or even below .900,forget about it. He didn't comfortable at all in both games. Even with the pucks he stops, the puck hits hit them or he is guessing.

AV need to do something here if he have any plans to get points. this evening. It was great to see so many veterans played well in last game, but we need to turn the chapter here. new game in about 10 hours.
Holden need to start over T. DeAngelo who need coach lessons for some weeks. Chytil don`t look comfortable or ready for NHL in my opinion.

Kreider - Zib - Buch
Nash - Miller - Zucc
Vesey - Hayes - Grabs
waiting for Fast on our 4th line - nothing much is going on our 4th.

Ryan Mc. - Shattenkirk
Skjei - M. Staal
Holden - Smith

Pavelec

Summary. It`s a a back to back game - get some fresh legs in call up Boo Nieves on our 4th - do something and time to use Holden on our 3rd pairing - DeAngelo need to rest after that horrific performance.

I wouldn't be so concerned about Lundqvist except for the fact that he was a very average goalie with a .910 save percentage last season.

This team can play better but without an elite goalie they are not going far.

Yes true, but we should not be concerned about that now with elite goal tending when DeAngelo playing like a nub. Pavelec should start and Henrik need more time - I notice since Henrik talk about defensive structure which is not the way to correct things as a goalie. And Jim from Blueshirts Underground probably agree with me - he is looking for excuses instead.

Real kick in the groin game. Started this season like we ended the last.

But it’s exactly what I expected. We got to be prepared to take a punch or two when following this team this season.

We will of course play for it, but I don’t think anyone with that much grasp of things expected a Cup this season. Hence I am not that concerned about short term problems. There are of course some long term problems too.

My thoughts on a few issues:

1. Hank? He is 6-7 months away from clearly out playing the best goalie in the world in a PO series.

He has been pretty up and down for a few years now, and it’s not getting better. We know that he still can perform in a P.O. series, but he won’t be a franchise player anymore. Is that news? Not really.

2. I am a bit concerned about the vets on our blue line. Especially the fact that Smith as a LHS is supposed to be our only solid defensive RD. How did Gorton think there?

With that said, this is a problem that can be fixed.

3. Damn some young skilled wingers out there are looking good right now. The PFs, not so much.

Will we regret passing on Casey Mittlestadt? I fear so...

4. We need more depth grinders that effectively can play a 0-0 game. Not the old school guys, but like a Fast. We miss Lindberg a lot, he has left a huge hole.

5. I think Shatty has had an OK start.

6. Getting tougher shifts as opposed be easiest shifts has been a HUGE difference for Brady Skjei. Short term problem for sure, no doubt Skjei will get there. But last season there where many back seat drives who thought it was insane to not give Skjei the toughest defensive shifts with Smith. Maybe it was a bad call, but just saying that usage also matters a bit.

The system doesn't rely on goalies bailing it out. EVERY system relies on goalies making saves.
Show me a team that doesn't need good goaltending to win over the course of a season and, especially, playoffs.
Bottom line is Hank has been average, being generous, for the last 1.5 years..again, being generous.

AV will be looking for a job if he can't adapt his system to fit the evolution of this team.

For the record I hate his man to man system. I don't understand why he can't change his breakout support to allow for similarly quick transitions while helping protect our goalie with a zone d. If there was ever a time to try it, its this season where we have dman capable of making the necessary passes to pull it off.

AV like small players down the middle like David D, no doubts about that. We will get crushed against LA or Blues, lol.

Oilers 18 games 2 goals and 2 assist for David.

Rangers 2 games 0

Not looking good at the moment - if u look at his career history it`s obvious signs that he declining unfortunately for David D. Hopefully J. Fast will help him to get more offensive zone pressure when he is back.

Hank blaming other people is getting tiresome. He’s getting old and cranky but his skills are deteriorating.

So...do we actually know who controls the d-pairings in-game?

I'm under the impression that AV decides pre-game what 6 players are playing, and then Ruff makes the pairings and rest of the decisions throughout the game (ie the weird pairing shuffles mid-game last night).

Am I right? Don't think his role was every really explained.
