if you think paying $50m for mediocrity is good GMing, I disagree.

I'll use the combined fWAR/RA9-WAR you're so fond of for this one and extrapolate their current paces over 32 starts (or 60 innings for relievers), along with the AAV of their current contracts. I'll ignore Venditte and Biagini because they cost the league minimum and Morales because he hasn't even thrown a full inning yet.

JA Happ - 4.8 WAR for $12 million ($2.1 million/WAR)
Marco Estrada - 4.8 WAR for $13 million ($2.7 million/WAR)
RA Dickey - -1.3 WAR for $12 million
Jesse Chavez - 0.8 WAR for $4 million ($5 million/WAR)
Gavin Floyd - 2.3 WAR for $1 million ($0.4 million/WAR)
Drew Storen - -1.6 WAR for $8.4 million

Value-wise, that's two horrible starts to the season (Storen and Dickey, obviously), one solid start (Chavez) and three outstanding starts (Happ, Estrada, Floyd).

Which 3 "high end" starters and 6 very good relievers did you expect the Jays to sign this last summer with just a 50 million dollar budget? This ain't hockey bud, 50 million ain't gonna get the Jays much with that much roster holes to fill.

He wanted Price and his -0.2 RA9-WAR and scrubs filling out the rest

I'm sure that would have been a great move to make if we were looking back on it in hindsight from right now, but then again zeke wouldn't be doing that, someone else would have to do it for him, he only does it when it suits his agenda.

i finally figured out how to use fangraphs custom player reports:

116.2ip, 4.09era (107-), 3.83fip (96-), 4.27xfip (109-), 4.15siera, 1.3fwar, 0.6ra9war

I don't think sanchez hutch and floyd are scrubs.

I took a gander at espn's relative power index for the first time this year, as I was annoyed that the red sox just piled up a bunch of wins against the 2 worst teams in baseball so far this year and wanted some reassurance....

http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/rpi

the basic formula is something like 25% team win% + 50% opponents win% ÷ 25% opponents' opponents win% I think.

So RPI

5.BAL .535
12.TBL .513
20.TOR .492
23.BOS .473
27.NYY .452

with these strength of schedules:

5.TBR .525
13.TOR .512
15.BAL .508
26.NYY .469
29.BOS .449

which made me feel a bit better at least.

To those who said Colabello is believable: Dee Gordon has been described as one of the most likable guys in baseball by many members of the media, as well as the most polite and a model of comportment. He also gets to keep all his shiny new contract he signed in the offseason. Makes what Colabello almost certainly did a little more believable.

Jon Harris with his first start after a couple weeks on the inactive list(don't know why).

4 IP, 2 hits, 0 runs, 1 walk, 43 pitches, 28 strikes

Cecil should be sent down for conditioning - let him start a game or 2 to regain his confidence

Um, Gibbons, you might want to figure out what the hell is wrong with this team... or else, you know...

For me this has been the most frustrating season start to a Blue Jay season. I was cautiously optimistic in 2013. With the success from last season I figured for sure they would come out and win lots of games. Hitting and the bullpen have been awful to where they should be. Losing so many one run games too

Maybe Gibbons should try putting Cecil in low key situations until he gets his confidence back, similar to what he did to him last year after Cecil blew a couple of saves and lost his closer role to Osuna. Jays really need both Loup and Morales to recover from injuries quickly.
