Prospect Info: 17OA: Axel Sandin Pellikka

He reminds me of a mix of Miro Heiskenen (mobility and speed and power play) and Debrincat (rediculous shot from the same flank)

I am very encouraged by everything he has done this year and am happy we picked him.

But yeah, I am going to temper my expectations til I see him in NA. And you can blame Brannstrom, Boqvist, etc. for that.

I feel that way about any undersized player. Every step is a bigger obstacle for them. I'm less concerned when they're Mo/Ed sized.

I wouldn't say ASP is undersized, but yes in comparison to our other two top D guys. He's 5'11 ~180 lbs. Makar, Fox, and Q Hughes are all that precise size (few pounds on him) and guys like Karlsson and Morrissey are just an inch taller and a few lbs heavier.

Honestly the all have the same thing in common: elite 4-way skating mobility and timing. And the hands as well. If you got the hands, feet, and brain all running in sync at a high level, you'll surely be successful. ASP has already tested highly in strength measurements relative to his peers too, so he's also got that.

It's just a matter of how good ASP can get. Can you imagine if he becomes our best D lol

Respectfully, there is a good sized gap between how Q Hughes and Makar skate, and how ASP skates.

Well he had the primary assist on the PP tonight. Did not get to tune in till the 2nd, first time watching him live. He did have a bad pinch there at the end which led to the empty net goal. Wouldn't say he looked lost in D zone at all.

If you are down 5-2, you need to have your d-men pinch. That doesn't concern me one bit.

I love what he has done so far this year (and can't really fault him), but I am still reserving judgment. The NHL is very unforgiving for undersized defensemen and he still faces an uphill battle to establish himself as a top four NHL defensemen.

This crap related to giving purely offensive D all the awards need to stop. Makar, Hughes, Karlsson have no clue what to do in their own zone (relative if course to the NHL standards). Pelikka as well.
Sounds like you don’t watch these players play. Makar is fantastic in his own zone and so is Hughes (this season). Karlsson is bad, yes.

This assumption that all D who score a lot and are small are automatically purely offensive needs to stop.
