If basketball refs enforced traveling with the same technical enforcement of icing by NHL linesmen, the score would be 0-0, and a whistle would be blown every four seconds.

Probably depends on a number of factors. Do the Rangers move both Andersson and Chytil to the wing? Because that’s what happens if you have Zibanejad, Hayes and Howden down the middle.

Even if you start one of Anderson and Chytil as the fourth line center, you can’t really keep them long-term.

If the Rangers pick high in June, it’s hard to pass on some of the centers there as well.

I don’t have a great answer to the situation. There’s a lot of moving parts and at some point it’s going to be the assumption of risk one way or the other.

Keeping Hayes is sort of instant gratification. Of course, none of the young centers look ready to replace Hayes right now. It’s possible that they won’t. But, you’re headed down the rebuild road, so these are the decisions you have to follow through on. If you want this team to be a future perennial Cup contender, you’re looking to get better players than what Hayes can give you.

Or, get better players to play with Hayes.
No reason to believe Lias will ever surpass Hayes level of play. Chytil flashes at times.

Hayes is also the type of player who can cause a team to lose some sleep.

You see the improvement. You see the flashes. You know he’s hitting his prime.

But what does that prime look like? Is it 45-50 points? 50-55? 55-60?

Is this guy who puts up 60 points with good wingers?

Can he do that for your team? Can you find the wingers?

All thoughts that come up with concern to Hayes.

Will Lias ever develop the skill of Hayes? I haven't seen it yet. I see him as a third line C or a 2nd line wing.
This is a very good point. Hayes has proven he’s good at: defense, shooting, passing, puck protection, poise, skating hockey sense, vision, creativity, and more. He’s a complete center, but I just wish he would show it more consistently. And that starts with deploying him more offensively. Can Andersson become as good as Hayes when he’s on his game? I don’t think so. And that’s why I want to keep Hayes.

If we got the same return for Hayes we did for Stepan and Raanta I'd be happy. Comparing Lias to Hayes right now isnt fair really, Hayes was almost 21 and a half when he played first in the nhl. Lias just turned 20.

That’s true, but that’s easier said than done.

It’s one thing to say, “get better players.” But you need to be able to get them.

And, if we’re being honest, Hayes isn’t exactly a proven commodity himself when it comes to scoring.

We’re assuming he can get more than his career average in points, but he hasn’t yet. And just how much above that do we think?

I worry that it’s easier to make those decisions when a player is on a hot streak and the world is their oyster. But that wasn’t the conversation two weeks ago, and it might not be two weeks from now.

Joe is right. How many shots does Buch need to take for the refs to raise an arm?
