Count me in the "I don't get it group" as well. Never understood the shit he gets. He basically hasn't even played a full season and shows lots of promise yet some wanted him gone. Glad AV and Now Quinn gave him a chance.

That’s what is so weird to me.

The kid will miss Calder consideration by 4 games — roughly 80 minutes of hockey.

I can’t recall a rookie ever being dissected the way this kid is. Ever. Especially when they’re on a 40+ pace as what is essentially a rookie defenseman.

I get that, but why are the standards so different for him from just about any rookie we’ve had in the past?

If he were a top 100 draft pick, with less than 100 pro games under his belt, about half a season in the NHL, wouldn’t most people be talking about what he might become with a few years experience?

I am not projecting superstardom for Pionk, but there is definitely a pedigree bias at work here.

I think that because his metrics are so bad, there's a very vocal group which polarizes opinions a little more.

Personally, I think his upside is comparable to ADA's, and that he has a similar amount of development to go in order to reach it; but I find myself criticizing Pionk more often because of the opposing opinions that he is already this established top4 NHLer.

And I disagree with that assertion; he has just as far to go as ADA does, it's just that his weaknesses aren't as apparent.

I've been watching hockey for a long time. The season is long, and I have seen first hand how rooks coming together yields danger for the league. This streak is a testament to the young guys and they will only get better.
Also never underestimate a pissed off goalie with something to prove ala the king. Nobody in the league wants the grail more than him.
