Perhaps he sees a quicker path to the NHL by impressing Blash?
Maybe. But Larkin has already proven everything at the College level. He was going to play in GR next year regardless.

This and he is not undersized so go to the next level. Makes plenty of sense. He'll have some time in the summer to add some more bulk but he doesn't need much right now. He's only 18? He'll naturally fill out some more in the next year or 2.
He can't play in the AHL for a full season until he's 20, right? Wouldn't he be assigned to the OHL next year if he didn't make the Wings?
That rule only applies to players drafted out of the CHL. Larkin was drafted out of the USNTDP, and is exempt from it.He can't play in the AHL for a full season until he's 20, right? Wouldn't he be assigned to the OHL next year if he didn't make the Wings?

He did it with Nastasiuk last year I believe and hes nothing special. Larkin on the other hand is returning from the world championships and one of the most dominating freshman years in a long time.
I would be suprised if he missed more than one game practicing, hes going to get some in before the games this weekend. He has so much talent why wouldnt they just throw him on the fourth line at the very least over someone like Campbell?
I'm pumped that hes going pro though I like that decision
No, that is only for players who signed a standard CHL contract prior to being drafted in to the NHL.
Larkin came from Michigan, so he never signed a CHL contract.
He will more than likely "fill out" for the next 3-5 years. 18-20 year olds aren't on the same level that 24+ young men are.
I wish I understood that when I was 19-20. When I got there for my frame between 23-25 I laughed when I would think about what would happen if I met myself from then physically.
The biggest thing he will gain over the next 2-4 years is a ton of physical endurance in addition to more top end bursts of strength on a level he just doesn't have right now.
That being said, if he dominates in the AHL, i don't think there's any reason to keep him there just because he's young. Look at Pulks, he needs work to do at the NHL lever. No matter how much he dominates the AHL, it hasn't transferred over to the big leagues for whatever reason in the short amount of time hes had. Only NHL experience will help with that.
Absolutely the right thing to do. He's dominated College, he's competed against NHLers at the world's and held his own.
I kind of hope he doesn't go on a scoring spree in GR, or the hype may be out of control.
