OTOH he doesn't know who will be coaching him in GR next season. Hopefully the coaching search will be wider than Lalonde.

Maybe. But Larkin has already proven everything at the College level. He was going to play in GR next year regardless.

This and he is not undersized so go to the next level. Makes plenty of sense. He'll have some time in the summer to add some more bulk but he doesn't need much right now. He's only 18? He'll naturally fill out some more in the next year or 2.

I think this is a big step towards Larkin playing in the NHL next year.

The brass knows that Blashill is not far removed from integrating younger players into a role that they can thrive, while still producing wins.

Listen Larkin is every bit the prospect that Bo Horvat is/was and Horvat played a big role on a playoff team as a teenager. I don't see what would stop Larkin from doing the same.... Andersson was playing 3rd line... Andersson!

Zetterberg - Datsyuk - Abdelkader
Nyquist - Sheanhan - Pulkinnen
Helm - Larkin - Tatar
Miller - Glendening - Jurco
Ferraro

Oh baby, I could get behind that.
Franzen LTIR
Weiss - ???

He will more than likely "fill out" for the next 3-5 years. 18-20 year olds aren't on the same level that 24+ young men are.

I wish I understood that when I was 19-20. When I got there for my frame between 23-25 I laughed when I would think about what would happen if I met myself from then physically.

The biggest thing he will gain over the next 2-4 years is a ton of physical endurance in addition to more top end bursts of strength on a level he just doesn't have right now.

Is that his mom? Nice. I'm just... saying.

Oh boy this thread could go in the wrong direction quickly... I will take the mature route and decline comment on the pic.:D

He can't play in the AHL for a full season until he's 20, right? Wouldn't he be assigned to the OHL next year if he didn't make the Wings?

No, that is only for players who signed a standard CHL contract prior to being drafted in to the NHL.

Larkin came from Michigan, so he never signed a CHL contract.

He did it with Nastasiuk last year I believe and hes nothing special. Larkin on the other hand is returning from the world championships and one of the most dominating freshman years in a long time.

I would be suprised if he missed more than one game practicing, hes going to get some in before the games this weekend. He has so much talent why wouldnt they just throw him on the fourth line at the very least over someone like Campbell?

I'm pumped that hes going pro though I like that decision

I loved about the worlds that he got a taste against top 6 centers. Played against Kopitar and I forget who he was matched up against against Russia but it was a top 6 line which had NHL centers on them.

He looked good on the defensive side of the fence so that is promising. Won't talk much about the o-side because his linemates weren't capable of producing offense and outside of his speed break-away ability he is more of a playmaker so that effected him a bit.

That being said, if he dominates in the AHL, i don't think there's any reason to keep him there just because he's young. Look at Pulks, he needs work to do at the NHL lever. No matter how much he dominates the AHL, it hasn't transferred over to the big leagues for whatever reason in the short amount of time hes had. Only NHL experience will help with that.

If he does well I doubt he will spend more than 1 season in the AHL (next year). He is already very far along defensively. And if he shows good to great production at the AHL level (.9 ppg+) I don't think there is much he can learn there.

As a big Michigan hockey fan, this is very disappointing news. Hyman graduates, then Copp leaves, and now Larkin bails. Ouch. We have incredible talent coming in next season, but many huge holes to fill. Might be yet another rough year.

As a huge Wings fan, this is probably the right call. He's a fast-burner, and we have had very few of those over the years, and not one in a long time. I expect Larkin to mostly play in GR next season, but get some cups of coffee in Detroit as well. If he isn't a full-time player for the Wings in 2016-17, I will be surprised.

Really hope I can get the Griffs game on Sunday.

Absolutely the right thing to do. He's dominated College, he's competed against NHLers at the world's and held his own.

I kind of hope he doesn't go on a scoring spree in GR, or the hype may be out of control.

I'm actually hoping the opposite. His status as a future #1C is still in doubt. If he can light up the AHL, he'll definitely prove he has that potential.
