I'm actually hoping the opposite. His status as a future #1C is still in doubt. If he can light up the AHL, he'll definitely prove he has that potential.

This playoff run could be to much to expect. He very well could slot in on the 4th line. No really I'm not kidding. Miele, AA , Nosek, then him. All 3 above him have played the whole year on the griffs. They also already have chemistry with linemates.

He could find himself with Nasty (when back from his head injury), and whatever vet blash prefers on the 4th line.

Hmm, well 14 games tops I guess. That's definitely not something I want to see next season though. Although Blash has showed confidence in newcomers in the past. Case in point, he put Bertuzzi on the first line day 1. So it's not unprecedented.

I'm not disagreeing with you. But the griffins are loaded at center so in the interest of chemistry he could be placed there. Granted if he gets 2nd line time AA could be moved to wing. And a line with him and AA would be a sight to see as far as given both players have after burners to the extreme. AA would finally have a linemate that would be able to keep up with him.

True. That's kind of what I said in the Griffins thread (and it's getting confusing having conversations in both so I'm gonna stick to this one lol.) I think AA and Larkin make a lot of sense. I also think AA and Mantha make a lot of sense, so I'm rooting for that line. But you're right in the sense that only Blashill knows where Larkin will end up at this point. As Guru said, as long as we don't see an AA-Larkin-Porter line, I'm good.

I think a big part of the decision was in that he will almost be guarenteed to play most of a full year in the AHL no matter which year he transitions. Better to get it out of the way earlier.

It would be very interesting if Blashill inserts a kid right away with barely any practice time. I would imagine he wouldn't play until game 3 at the earliest.

Lol of course he'll play. He's too good not to. This isn't the NHL, this is the AHL and Larkin is the most talented and probably second best center only behind the AHL journeyman Miele. AA is a winger at the next level and Larkin should be already ahead of Nosek

Honest question, does anyone think this happens if Babs is still our coach?

What i mean to say is, do you think Larkin sees an opportunity to play for, and hopefully impress the next red wings coach?

Yes, Babcock/Blashill had very little if any impact on this. Silly

Silly? Are you kidding? It boggles my mind that people forget the psychological aspects of player transactions. You've got a kid who essentially gets, at the very least, an intimate, 4 game tryout for the guy who is now, informally, the Wings coach. And he's a kid who thinks, regardless of how realistic it is, that he could "maybe make Detroit." He absolutely recognizes the rare position he's in where he gets to establish a working relationship with his future NHL coach while playing AHL games.

Come on, people. If you had the ego on you that most of these elite prospects do, you'd be thinking about impressing the hell out of Blash and that it could result in an expedited NHL debut. These guys aren't sitting around thinking "well, Mr. Holland doesn't promote AHL players quickly, so I can be patient." No. He's thinking "I'm different. I'm better. They haven't had a guy like me."

Can someone please update this thread title to say he is going pro.

Edit: Thank you!!!!

Yes, I'm sure Larkin recognizes there a chance he can leave a good impression with the organization and maybe get an opportunity next season to make the NHL club. However, there's almost no chance of that happening. He's going to be in Grand Rapids most of next season simply due to have too many centers already. If he's turning pro because he thinks he has a shot at making the Red Wings roster next season he's going to be disappointed and is doing it for the wrong reasons.

First of all, it's almost certainly not the only reason he's going pro.

Second, like I said, you can't think of this from the perspective of a fan of the organization but from that of an 18 year old who just represented his country in the World Championships after being dominant in the NCAA and at the WJCs. He knows nothing but smooth sailing at this point. He isn't thinking about a long road through the AHL right now but the fact that all he's done so far in his career is quickly earn the trust of his coaches. Here, he gets a chance to do that again with the guy who, in short order, is going to be named head coach of the Wings.

Either way, it's all falling into place for him. This is a huge, huge opportunity. And I think it's great that he's getting to play so much hockey, even if it's disjointed. That's one thing I worry about when NCAAers make the leap to the NA pros.

What does Toronto have that is closer to a "Datsyuk replacement" than Larkin. Maybe they pick up Marner? Is he (significantly) more likely to reach a Datysuk level than Larkin at this point?

Potentially Dylan Strome. Otherwise, nothing.

But Toronto having a "Datsyuk replacement" or not has nothing to do with why he went there.

He has to say that. Do you think Babs would be saying the "Red Wings are gonna be great" if he were still the coach here. No, we would be hearing the same thing we've always heard. "We need the young guys to step up... We need great goaltending... We need some help on the back end... and what not. Babs was never the type of guy to commend the situation he's currently in. He always finds something that needs improving.

But I don't think he's lying. I don't think he went to Toronto because he thought right now they have a better outlook than Detroit. I really don't.

I think that he wants to boost his legacy, and instead of winning with a stacked Canada roster, or inheriting a stacked Wings roster, he wants to be part of an overhaul turning a loser into a winner. And where better to do that as a pro-Canadian guy than Toronto? He said several times during his presser he wanted a "challenge", so I think he genuinely meant what he said.

He also said Toronto is "Canada's Team" and he wants to help restore that title all shiny and new. Guy is a super proud Canadian, so we should have seen this coming. I thought it would be Edmonton, though.

Anyway, this is the Larkin thread so everybody, myself included, needs to get back on track.
