With the expectation he’s staying over there I imagine he just signs a straight deal with the KHL and doesn’t do a sign and loan.

Up until 2005, Europeans had to be drafted before entering the NHL. So you'd get a handful of guys in their mid-late 20s getting drafted every year.

I think they had to amend the CBA in the early 90's for European picks too. There was something goofy about not being able to draft a first time eligible European after round 3 unless they hit a certain games played threshold with their senior clubs. This caused somebody like Nicklas Lidstrom to go undrafted in his first year of eligibility. And the big game changer was when Vancouver drafted Pavel Bure in the 6th round in 1989. As soon as they announced the pick, a bunch of teams ran to Central Registry to protest because they were under the impression Bure wasn't eligible to be taken after the third round.

I'm trying to understand how the sign+loan option works. For Mukhamadullin, the ELC slid because he signed at 19. But not sure if it would work differently for Gritsyuk. As others said the Kaprizov route might work best for him. Sign a 2 year ELC next spring, burn the first year, play one year on ELC in the NHL, then become RFA. If he were to sign a 2 year ELC now and the first year got burned during loan and he joined late in Year 2, he wouldn't have much on his NHL resumé for his next deal.

Interesting, I thought the Canucks had located a birth certificate for Bure. It’s extra funny that teams were allowed to draft players that were not registered.

I remember some team (Florida?) tried to draft Ovechkin a year early based on extra days from the leap years.

As I remember it, the Canucks had gotten hold of the box scores which proved that Bure met the games played requirement to be drafted later. I can only imagine how chaotic that was before the Internet. Apparently Detroit (maybe other teams) also had the info and were going to take Bure with a late pick as well.

Florida General Manager Rick Dudley attempted in four different rounds to draft Ovechkin, arguing that, if leap-year dates were taken out of the equation, Ovechkin actually would turn 18 four days before his recognized birthday and thus have been eligible for 2003.

The NHL rejected the Panthers all four times, but the league did comply with Florida’s request to make the final one in writing. This way, if it is ruled that the Panthers were in the right, they could justify a claim on Ovechkin.

Dudley said team management hatched the idea a month before the 2003 draft, and he acknowledged its limited chance at success.

Other amusing European related signings were when the league rejected ELCs for Tomas Hyka (Philadelphia) and Vladimir Tkachev (Edmonton). Apparently those management groups and player agents didn't read the full clause on draft eligibility. In a nutshell, those ELCs would have been fine for similarly aged North Americans but not permitted for European (trained) players.

It came up when I first raised the nickname issue months ago. I was thinking at the time that we can't call Gritsyuk the nickname Gritty for obvious reasons. So I pondered what alternative would make sense. I thought of just Grits after the food and the trope about the NJ lineup being small had been floated and as I noted, Shrimp and Grits is a local favorite. I just struck me as silly and fun. I'm too lazy to go back and find it now.

Edit: OK I did the search function. It appears I first posted it on Oct. 27, 2020. I can't believe it is that old. Me being me, I of course raised it a few times after that.

I, with my Pejorative Slured Christian forgiveness, cannot keep up with the cancellation of various characters. His love story sounds little bit crazy from my point of view, but I know nothing and have no rule to make a judgement. Creators are very specific people some times, I know a lot of different artists of pretty middle level and no fame, but even than some are... I wouldn't trust them with my children if I had them. Or would not prefer to drink with them. M Jackson was a great singer you know.

There was a rumor and few middle level clues that Arseniy signed 1 or 2 years deal. There were a word about that the team will announce that later. Anyway, there were no official calls still.

NHL team treat their european prospects because players are not property. Do not forget that without a contract, all our wishes to young players are for the most part only the fruit of our fantasies. (how badly it sounds after talking about Allen and Jackson).

The thing I like about the situation here, is this guys not being hyped up as some savior. He can marinate over there until he hopefully feels ready to come to NA, then you see if he’s legit or not. He isn’t being banked on per se, more of just a hey there could be potential here, wouldn’t it be a great bonus if he pans out to be a player.

Not to over analyze, but that’s definitely not a bad thing to see. You’d figure if he has absolutely no desire to come over to NA eventually, he probably wouldn’t feel the need to put that in his bio.

Not sure if many here remember our 1994 first round pick. It wasn't Patrik Elias, he was the 2nd round pick! It was a little known kid from Russia, Vadim Sharifijanov. Somewhat of a bust. As it turns out, he admitted many years later that he had been using steroids before getting drafted, (and maybe for a while after, can't remember). He was eventually traded:

January 14, 2000: Traded by the New Jersey Devils with 3rd round draft pick in 2000 (Tim Branham) to the Vancouver Canucks for 2nd round draft pick in 2000 (previously acquired, New Jersey selected Teemu Laine) and 3rd round draft pick in 2000 (previously acquired, New Jersey selected Max Birbraer).

I remember having hopes for Teemu (no relation to Patrik Laine) because he was known to be uber-fast. He had a pretty good career in Finland, but never came over.

On topic. How bad the Devils drafted then and now. To be fair, the quality of athlete then and now is completely different. Most kids are skilled even if they are goons. Grits or Yukky could of been drafted way earlier in the 90s.
