That's a brutal deal for Kessel.

If you're moving Kessel, it's for a piece that can make a similar impact, not a set of pieces that might, but probably won't become anything near Kessel.

Terrible deal.

Only in TO would everyday involve a trade for the sixth best scorer in the NHL. Reminds me of all those years we undervalued soft Sundin.

Hope is the only thing that drives most of Toronto's fans. Leafs and Raps fans alike would rather have something to hope for (prospects) than a sure thing if the sure thing hasn't panned out to be a megastar. They don't believe in continuity or stability.

It's sad to see but that's the reality of our market.

*brings back the Kessel to MIN "rumour" that we were talking about last night.

So yeah, that's really the only way I'd seriously consider moving Kessel. And MIN is the only team I can see overpaying because of them being in it to win it, and the whole hometown boy angle.

The more i think about the Leafs are more than due for a big free agent prize...

I say we break the bank on a Perry & Getzlaf.

Offer them identical 7 year $60M AAV $8.57

7 years takes them both to 36 years old.

I would try to get as many picks/good prospects as i can this year for Lupul/Connolly/Lambo/MacA/Komi.

Play the kids for the short year... If they make the PO GREAT! That will be huge step in development. If not we have a shot a 1st overall or at least a solid pick in a great draft year.

Moving forward with a great core of Getz, Perry, Kessel, JVR, Phanuef, Gardiner, Rielly. Also a solid group of secondary players in Grabo, Kulemin, Bozak, Kadri, Gunnar, Liles and Riemer.

i like that a lot!

i am still waiting to see a link to this Kessel to WILD rumor?

It's fun to get hyped, but I doubt Getzlaf or Perry sign here

-Getzlaf probably stays
-Unsigned Perry will be traded for a good package, where he will then re-sign

As for Lombardi, we're probably getting a late pick back. Fits in with Nonis's "get younger" philosophy (while say...Raffi Torres doesn't). Maybe Lucas Lessio if we're lucky.

Their was an Anaheim reporter who is close to the Ducks on Edmonton radio this week.....the conversation turned to Getz and Perry. He said the Ducks obviously want to resign both but said he believes Getz will sign but Perry will leave. Said Getz loves it there and doesn't want to leave Anaheim. He said Perry likes it there too but winning is more important and said he is getting sick of the Ducks not having the resources to spend to cap limit. Said Pronger had same frustration. He said Perry will likely look to sign with contender in the offseason.

Datsyuk Perry scares the crap out of me. But I see Detroit going hard after a defenseman next summer. Edler comes to mind.

Mac is a good player to have when a message needs to be sent. I would have him out against Lucic onhis first shift, with the sole purpose of smashing him, and setting the tone.

I hope Carlisle would appreciate it enough to swallow the fine and/or suspension (his, not his enforcer's, if that was done so blatantly)...

I'd definitely retain half of Lombardi's salary to make his value better.

Leafs need to explore this avenue.

Lombardi just under 2M for 48 games could be a good depth player for a team like the Coyotes. They could re-sign him to a decent deal after too.

I'm thinking probably a third round pick, or perhaps a player like Boyd Gordon.

IF true that team has to/will overpay!

1st + 1st + Top Prospect is the minimum Toronto will get back from a contender with a chance to make at least 2 cup runs with a top 10 goal scorer in the world.

In that scenario, you're talking about picks in the 25-30 range... :(

Stop undervaluing Kessel.

We're all trying so hard to not seem like Leaf homers and it's killing the value of some of our players. (...)

Really?

Are you talking about Fantasy Hockey?

Or do you seriously believe that GMs will go "Humm, Joe Smuck of HF is right, we should give less for Kessel"? :amazed:

Why not retain all of his salary this year and turn that 3rd or 4th into a 1st?

I'm assuming the max share is 50%...

I love how every time someone trashes a trade proposal its because the player we are trying to trade is "undervalued". No one here thinks Kessel sucks. We actually think he is extremely talented, which is why we would trade him; because of the value of what we could get back. Wanting to trade Kessel has nothing to do with undervaluing him, we merely except the fact that he has MORE value to another team than he has to OUR team. He needs to play with a first line center. He can't be the best player on a team. He can't be the highest paid player on a team. His greatest asset is as a supporting piece. If we can trade him to a team NEEDING an elite supporting piece, for a player who would thrive as the best player on our team, you do it, no matter how many points Kessel has scored in the last 3 years. Then, you use the next draft to find the elite supporting piece to replace Kessel and support our new star, or trade for him as well.

Teams Phil would be perfect on Does that team have what we need?
Minnesota - Parise is the star Yes - Granlund projects to be that star
Pittsburgh - Crosby is the star No - Unless the are willing to part with Malkin
New York Isles - Tavares is the star No
Tampa Bay - Stamkos is the star No
Colorado - Landeskog is the star Yes - Duchene projects to be that star
Flyers - Giroux is the star Yes - Couts projects to be that star

Personally, I would only trade Kessel for 5 players: From the above...Granlund, Duchene, and Couts. Teams I didn't mention, but have players who they are having trouble signing...Evander Kane or Jamie Benn. Other than that, I would not trade Kessel.

This this this 100x over. This is what ive been saying the whole time (minus the Couts). No reason dealing him unless we can acquire a player that is the same calibre Kessel was 4 years ago.

Nonis is not a flashy guy. other than maybe a couple tweak moves i still say he doesnt make any major moves before the season starts. and maybe sells off a couple players at the deadline to stock up for this years draft. He will probably try to get some high end talent in july but i dont see them succeeding untill its attractive to play here and with our goaltending the way it is and our lack of defensive identity it just isnt attractive for high end type of players to want to play here. Point is, i wouldnt bank on free agency to save this team. Its still going to be awhile yet before we have a roster that we can brag about.

He is however beyond incredible at signing players well under market value. Wasnt it he who signed PPG sedins to a 3.5 mill contract and Burrows for half a decade at 500k

I agree, Mac is a very good complimentary player .. And I wouldn't have a problem with the Leafs keeping him if the Leafs weren't so undersized and non-physical in their top 9 .. Unfortunately holding the other roster spots relatively constant, his spot in the line up is better served to a bigger physical player with some skill, or a player of the same size that has a higher ceiling (like Kadri)

Is he really that nice, polite, and quick with the compliments...? ;)

I'd say the opposite is true. Toronto fans are obsessed with making playoffs, even if would only lead to a treadmill team. Only recently has the perception begun to change and fans begun to recognize the importance of drafting and devloping.

Having said that, I love Kessel and we should only ever trade him for MASSIVE overpayment. Losing him would leave us with a HUGE hole to fill for the future.

I'd definitely take a chance on Hickey, add to the depth of the blue line and see if he can progress under Eakins .. He's not that old that he can't make an impact

Hamill also intrigues me for the Marlies

And how do you propose sending them to Eakins without putting them on waivers? :(
