Read what I wrote.

If they are confident that Perry will not resign.

So basically it's Kessel + JvR for Ryan + (decent package?)

Yes, got it - understood. And the essence of my reply was that if Perry won't re-up with Anaheim they can and will get a lot more than JVR for him at the deadline.

Have you ever seen a rental get the equivalent of JVR at the deadline?

Kovalchuk didnt get a single player close to JVR, neither did Hossa. JVR for Perry at the TDD would be a steal for them.

Trade Kessel for 1st + 2nd, Phaneuf for 1st, and Lupul for 1st.

This year's draft is a gold mine. With all the other players finishing off their contracts, Leafs will be in such a good position to start from scratch with multiple first rounders.

Remember only contenders will be dealing for them, these picks would liikely be 25-30.....

Nope. JVR for perry at the deadline is a lot and more than fair.

Stars at deadlines usually get packages of late firsts/meh prospects/3rd liners.

JVR is much more valuable than that.

+ Kessel > Ryan IMO and adds more value to the perry for Jvr swap.

Ideally I'd do JVR for perry only, but I think Anaheim would prefer Kessel if they are losing their main goal scorer

Not that I want to trade Kessel or Phaneuf for just picks (if we felt like we had to trade them). But I think some other teams besides contenders would be interested.

Teams that have built up a good strong farm system and want to take the next step. Florida, Ottawa (we wouldn't trade with them...), Colorado, TB, NYI, etc could all potentially be interested in trades like that. They all have some core pieces + strong farm systems, which could give them the flexibility for a trade like this.

But if we deal them Kessel than whats the likelyhood itll be a top 5 pick? Thats a huge risk, unless you wait until the draft

Off-season moves: Nathan Horton?

Everyone's talking about The Getz and Perry, but Nathan Horton is also coming off contract. We could use a big bruising winger on the second line. Kully isn't small but he doesn't play big either. Could inject some points and muscle into the line-up for not that much cap.

I suppose a 4 year deal worth 3.5-4M a year?

I know he's had concussion problems but he seemed to bounce back quite well previously. Thoughts, HFB?

1st thought is why not wait for the season to at least start before worrying about the off season?

He didnt quite bounce back last year- considering his season ended with a concussion. So we don't know how he's bounced back just yet.

If he's healthy then sure, absolutely. Though his work ethic is questionable at times and I wouldnt say he's a big banger.

If he's healthy he will also command more than $4M though.

I love Horton, he's one of my favourite players. But there are two problems I foresee:

1) Boston will definitely re-sign him if he comes back 100%.

2) I'm pretty sure that him and Phaneuf very much dislike each other.

Nathan Horton can be a heck of a player, but would you rather take a chance on him, than resigning Lupul? Given where the Cap is going to be, that is likely a chance you are going to have to take, if we want to have a shot at improving at C, and in G.

I just don't think this is a position of focus we should be taking, without making trades.

I, uh, what? Really? No lol. Not even close on either. Even farther with the Lupul one. Not trading a 1st line winger for two more Kadri-esq prospects.

Thanks for your opinion and your weak attempt at condescending me; but if you stop and actually break them down, we get good value in a rebuild.

Kessel (1st line RW) and Bozak (3C scoring)

for

Filip Forsberg (Probable 2nd line RW, 1st line upside) - equivalent to a top 10 pick
Marcus Johansson (Probable 2A-1B centreman) - equivalent to a top 5-10 pick
Tom Wilson (Project) - equivalent to a mid first value

and Lupul an 'older' player who could easily regress a large amount this year, who has yet to prove that he is a consistent first line player, for the same value as a mid first (Tomas Jurco) and a 2nd (Martin Frk). I mostly do this because I love Jurco as a prospect.

We should draft MacKinnon, then sign Weiss, Horton, Getzlaf and Perry.

JvR - Getzlaf - Perry
Lupul - MacKinnon - Kessel
Kule - Weiss - Horton
Komarov - McClement - Brown

WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?1ONEONE!11!

That's a brutal deal for Kessel.

If you're moving Kessel, it's for a piece that can make a similar impact, not a set of pieces that might, but probably won't become anything near Kessel.

Terrible deal.

Only in TO would everyday involve a trade for the sixth best scorer in the NHL. Reminds me of all those years we undervalued soft Sundin.
