While to some this might suggest Lou is coming; Bernier is no more certain than Reimer and I don't think acquiring Bernier improves our goaltending much.

Step two would be this summer, either go hard after Getz and Perry(who I'm really interested in, would they get to UFA? Would they be interested in us? I think they would at least give us a look) .
OR we go for a big trade finally and nab a #1 C and never look back.
bam you have your #1 C+#1 G, hopefully with little effect to the roster. Then we can starting contending for deep playoffs.

One thing is for sure, Getzlaf, Perry and any other top tier UFA is not going to want any part of a team with 8 straight seasons out of the playoffs.
We need a player of Luongo's calibre to come in and not only stabalize the back end, but potentially propel us to the playoffs and make us an attractive destination.
Good players don't sign with losers.

Lets not downplay bernier, the guy has legit talent. My only problem is he is redundant with reimer in the system. We need a vet, not another trial. If anything teams that have a vet but not a high end future prospect would be interested.
i.e. If I was calgary I would make a pitch. Have kipper mentor him for 3-4 years then pass down the reins.

Depends... If we tank one more year and draft 1/2 overall, we will look like a team with a promising future. Do it like minnesota.

Im not worried about our defensive future at all, we have numerous options without even mentioning UFA.
My question is what comes after this rumoured Luongo deal? If it is Bozak and Kadri, that makes us one of the weakest teams in the show at the centre position... But Burke knows if we get a 1C that we are a playoff team.
So if Luongo = Bozak & Kadri..

Im sorry but there's no way we bottom further than Edmonton and Columbus(huge problems all around)
NYI also has an underwhelming roster and will have to face championship teams alot this season.
Then you add in MTL with a 34-35 year old cole and tiny gionta highlighting your offense(kind of exaggerating there,they have a bit of talent, but I would take our forward group over theirs)
Then you add buffalo who just lost a 2nd line centre for a gritty 3rd line winger, now with a tiny upfront group.
Then you add tampa who brought on a backup(somehow people think this automatically makes them a playoff team)
IMO, we are NOT a bottom 3-5 team at ALL, we're a bottom 10 team with POOR goaltending and a playoff team with solid/average goaltending. So even if you hope to tank, it's gonna be hard to get that low with this team, too much talent IMO to get another significant pick, last year was a bit of a fluke.

Luongo brings more than just what he'd accomplish on the ice, But he would also be a symbol of how the team is perceived as playing destination.
Go back to 1998 and if Cujo wasn't signed Roberts and Corson don't follow in 2000, Then Mogilny after that in 2001. Couple that with a few good trades(McCabe and Tucker) then you're right back fighting for the top 4 or 5 spots in the conference.
temporarily we may just go with Connolly, which I wouldnt love but wouldnt HATE.
if we can trade for a #1 C now do it, if not i'd wait until the summer.
I realize that is an option, but would BB take that risk? Trading for Luongo would suggest a competitive mentality going into the season. Having Connolly as your 1C does not make this team competitive. Why bring Luongo in just to finish 12th in the East? The deals for a goalie and a center must go together if Bozie is involved.
Unfortunately Vancouver has zero centres to provide for us, they badly need a bozak to help them out right now with kesler out for a month+.
I'm not sure who we could trade for, Getzlaf is the only one that comes to mind if he actually wants to leave, plus if you get him you're almost guarenteed getting Perry in the offseason.(Anaheim would give us a fair offer too, good relationship with Burke.)
But to get Getzlaf, I have no idea what the price would be(especially with his contract expiring.
