Player wouldn't retire

Interesting idea, but as you said, unlikely scenario. I assume they thought of that and would have a rule preventing that though.

Look at the scenario described in my last post.

During his 8th year, his cap hit would be $3.7M more than the salary paid.

So the cap hit for the last two years would be $1.3M per year.

question.

If he plays a 9th year, his cap hit would be $4.3M more than his actual pay. Does that mean that the Leafs would then get an extra $1.7M for their cap in 2021-2022?

It seems more and more likely that we make Van buy him out and try to go after him next year...

it would destroy us if we trade for him and he retires in 5 years...

$1.4M cap hit per year over 5 years would destroy the Leafs?

Wow... You have no faith in management.

Bob Murray Come on Down!

Because I think about the Leafs too much, I concluded today the Luongo trade is not enough. If we don't do something else the Leafs may be headed towards a miserable season. Its time for Burke to turn to his favourite trading partner.

Some red flags as we zoom towards a new season:

We fired an offence first coach late last season.

We replaced him with a defence first coach.

We have only tinkered with the line up over the off season, which leaves Carlyle trying to fit a square peg (offensive minded players) into a round hole (his defensive system).

Carlyle will have little time to practice and implement his system because with the short compacted schedule and truncated training camp there will be little time to teach it.

If we trade for Luongo, we will be picking up an older goalie, who will likely show lockout rust as he chose not to play somewhere else over the lockout and has had slow starts throughout his career. Slow starts will be fatal with a short season.

If we don't trade for Luongo, we will probably be starting Reimer, who if memory serves was shut down in March and didn't play during the lockout and will likely be showing the effects of 11 months of rust to start the season.

Anyway, hope I am wrong or I hope Burke can pull off a massive Jays/Marlins type trade off with a sunbelt team beginning to panic over little to no season tickets sales and little prospect of selling tickets in the current climate.

A team with players that already know Carlyle's system. A team with prominent players approaching free agency.

There is only one answer - Lets rip off Bob Murray again!

where do you get 1.4???

It will be around 3.1M for 5 years.

And i am a Burke guy.

The Leafs would pay him about $7M more than his cap hit for those 5 years.

If he retires with 5 years left, it comes to $1.4M per year.

PS: Actually, it would be worse if he plays 6 years ($2.1M cap hit over 4 years) or 7 years ($2.3 cap hit over 3 years). As written previouly, the cap hit goes down to $1.3 over two years if he plays 8 years, and the Leafs should get a cap bonus of $1.7M if he plays 9 years (and if the rule allows it...).

Done Deal! #Luongo & Cap Flex to #Leafs. Frattin, Bozak & 2nd Rounder to #Canucks. Expect Announcement Thursday (Following Signed CBA) #NHL

To be honest, this is the kind of deal I would expect Burke to make for Luongo. I just don't see him over-paying. Nuck fans would hate it. We'll see. I think Frattin is a much better player then many fans realize. Understanding this is a hoax of course, but I don't think it's that far off.

frattin and bozak plus a 2nd? thats overpayment IMO. gillis is the only one in the hockey world who thinks hes going to bank on this trade. with how bad that contract is as is and how potentially bad it can be down the road, he would be lucky to get a player and a pick. hes not getting 2 young decent players plus a 2nd rounder. i wouldnt make that deal. and i think thats why this whole situation may get ugly and Lu may not even go anywhere and is bought out this summer.

Apparently HNiC radio is now reporting its a done deal too. See main trade board.

I still find it curious Frattin was scratched last night. Hes young and doesnt need to rest before an NHL season

I truly hope Frattin isn't involved in the deal. That would sour my excitement for this season very quickly.

Would be sad to lose Frattin. I thought he could be a consitent 25 goal scorer for us in a couple years time. But, you've gotta give to get, and Luongo is one of the best goalies in the league coming at a discount price. Pretty fair deal if true.

true. And they didn't scratch Kadri or Holzer. Both who most most likely will be at camp as well....

I'd prefer trading Frattin over Kadri anyways but I'd would have liked it if we kept both.

Frattin would be the type of player the Nucks are trying to add so that would make sense
I'm still curious whether Bozak is in this or not with the talk of how it will affect Kessel

i don't really like Frattin that much. He's a me-first player. Can't make a pass to save his life

If he can bring what he's done in the AHL to the NHL, I don't care when/where/who/how he passes the puck.

He's got a ton of other strengths that should have fans drooling.

I think the fact that Frattin was benched and not Kadri makes me believe that Frattin is going to be traded. Whether or not it's Bozak is what remains to be seen. If it is Bozak, you have to think that Burke has another deal for a center in the pipeline. You can't trade Bozak right now without really hurting the team.

Personally, I don't see Burke trading Bozak, so, as unlikely as it may seem, I think the center going back to Vancouver will actually be Connolly. Canucks fans are going to hate this, but I think Connolly makes more sense from a value perspective. He balances out the salary traded a bit better, but is an expiring, so next season when the cap goes down, the Canucks can just let him walk. Plus, Luongo has literally no trade value right now. Basically, there is only one team that is willing to take him off the Canucks hands. Florida does not seem interested, and Gillis will not trade him in the Conference to Edmonton or Columbus.

I see the deal as:

To Toronto
Luongo

To Vancouver
Frattin
Connolly
2nd round pick 2014

Looks like underpayment, but I think Burkie will pull this off.

Ithink thats a good deal , maybe TO takes on some more salary to help but thats hopefully the type of deal we see. Vancouver has to be conscientious of next years cap number and Connolly as an expiring is a good fit. Then Kesler can play 3rd line shut down

He's got a ton of other strengths that should have fans drooling.

This year:
9 goals
7 assists

His role is to shoot the puck, add a phyiscal element and not be a defensive liability.

He has 33 AHL goals in 56 AHL games.

Not everyone can be pretty, nor do we want them to be.

Interesting... I wonder how much money Van will be taking back, if any...

As for Frattin, he's a decent player but i think Ashton can replace him as a 3rd line RWer, for me Ashton better suits a 3rd line role anyways. I also think D'Amigo can replace him on the depth charts for a Top 6 RWer. So it does make sense he would be the part going the other way.

Frattin + Bozak + 3rd for Luongo

meh. I think Frattin is expendable. he's only 3 months younger than Kessel. Kessel is PPG in the NHL. Frattin is almost PPG in AHL.
