Plug the goaltending and center holes first.

We have Phaneuf, Liles, Gunnarson, Komisarek and Holzer. Ummmm... I see a problem here. Rielly will almost definitely make the team as it stands simply because we might not have enough depth at the position.

Apparently Kulemin is a hot commodity. Ryan would make him expendable, hell MacArthur is already expendable. It's all about moving pieces around to make things work.

The one position of strength the Leafs *might* actually have is on the wing.

Kessel, Lupul, JVR are guaranteed 3 of the 4 spots for top 6 wingers.

Then there's Kulemin, MacArthur and Kadri/Frattin.

Goaltending is a problem. Center is a problem. Defense may even be a bit of a problem (for now). Wing? Not really.

I don't see what the problem is here. So instead of having 3 legit top 6 wingers, we now have 4, meaning we can deal someone like Kulemin, or let MacA walk.

Yes, we could use those assets to shore up other areas instead, but I'm sure Burke would have done that if possible. Also, getting Ryan means if some big name C were to be available, we could offer up a player like JVR, which most of the other teams couldn't.

I don't see the issue with this move, IF we got Luongo as well. Not to mention, Toronto would also appear to be a much better destination for FA's too.

Jonas Siegel is probably one of the biggest Leaf homers out there plus he isn't exactly known for breaking trade news. Take what you read/hear from him with a grain of salt.

Putting all that aside, it's weird to see the Leafs loading up on scoring wingers and not addressing the other needs we face.

If the trade is infact "done", then I think it will be announced early Saturday, which will be before the next Marlies game.

I like the fact we would be adding to the wing! It has worked well for Philly because it opens up so much more ice down the middle. I guy like Kadri could benefit big time from that ala Giroux.

Ryan can also play C... He just isn't the greatest FO guy... With the Ducks he plays all over the ice like a C.

Completely agree. I like Ryan, but too many missing pieces to be making deals like this at the moment. I would rather Burke stays on path he's been travelling the past couple of years, but look to stockpile some additional picks, not trading them. Some excellent young players coming through in the next 2-3 drafts...players you can build around.

I would actually forget about Luongo, unless the return price is very reasonable. No interest in trading Kadri or any draft picks to get him, and focus on building from whithin. Some good prospects on the Marlies, our juniors in the CHL and Europe are progressing nicely, but could use a couple more elite prospects like Reilly.
