I think it`s a combination @SnowblindNYR - Stars probably had one of their best tactically games this season. I did not watch the first 40 min, but we were outplayed in chances and SOG 45-25 tells me that Stars was dominating, and AV usually roll different lines when they are behind and chasing.

Still, if I was laying money down, the Dallas Stars would not even get a sniff. I don't think they are top contenders.

So I'll take this result because 1 point is better than 0 but does anyone else think that this was a worse performance than 5-0 loss where the shots are like 35-30 and the other team just finishes better and the goalie doesn't play the game of his career? I legit think that this was possibly the worst game we've played in years despite the flattering point.

I don't know if it was one of the worst performances ever, honestly. It was one of the strangest games I've watched in my nearly 40 years of watching hockey. It wasn't like Dallas was flying all over the ice and connecting on beautiful pass after beautiful pass. It was constant blocked pass/blocked shot that went off a skate to a Dallas player, to another Dallas player, to a wide open Dallas player, blocked, to another wide open Dallas player. It was just strange to me. Every bounce ended up on a Star stick. Also seemed like the Stars got away with a lot of hooking and interference.

I am NOT saying the Rangers played even close to acceptable. I just don't know if it was a case of Dallas being so GOOD, or Dallas being quicker to do a very liberal interpretation of the rule book.

Tonights performance was pitiful but I really think Dallas was very very good tonight. I think they would have beaten any team tonight playing the way they did. They are a good team and will make the playoffs.

My god that was a bad performance. I wouldn't say the Stars dominated either, but the Rangers did a lot of sleepwalking. Still, I was at the game and had a blast.

Other than Pavs, two players stood out to me in a positive way.

Kevin Hayes was a total beast the entire game. Had the puck on his stick at all times. He's got a ton of confidence right now, and when he's feeling it he has all the tools to dominate.

Brendan Smith showed some of his hidden offensive instinct tonight. Some really slick dangles and great pinches. He's gotten back to form which is great.

What you saw was trap hockey melded with LA Kings style half court press. Point shot, rebounds, heavy board work to win back possession, point shot...

Smith was really good in the third.

Are you talking about when we were on offense or defense?

User ReggieDunlop would’ve had Desharnais shoot there too

Oh yeah Definitely.

Also, focusing on that decision is a brilliant analysis of an overall non show tonight.

Well done sir.

Also, I want to put on the record that it’s not that I love AV, but it’s hard to keep telling the same posters to stop being hysterical bitches for every micro decision he makes.

Is it more frustrating to read someone saying “there might be some other issues with this team besides the whipping boy of the year” than posters whining as if they were going into labor over minutia?

Is this a Ken Hitchcock thing? I honestly don't remember ever playing like this against his teams before though.
Yeah. Hitchcock used the trap his first run in Dallas and then with StL. It was like an aggressive 1-2-2 tonight where they hounded and closed on the puck carrier even before he could reach the blue line. It was like a pressure oriented 1-2-2.

His skating got so much better in the offseason. Such a nice skating play, he's made a number of these this season that showcase elite speed or very close to elite speed.

Not having Z-bad hurts immensely.

Yeah, but it would still require operating as a 5 man unit to break hitch's shallow forecheck system, as it's known. AV and his staff need to help the players make adjustments. They struggle against the trap because once the forwards fly the zone they don't come back. Gap control is terrible.

We also struggle against the trap because our offense is more of a committee effort, and losing Z-bad completely changes the play style. I mean this happened last year when he had the chip on his ankle.

Also, the whole team played like shit tonight. Yes, Dallas had way more control of the game, but they didn't look fantastic either. The Rangers a few minutes and one screened enormous ass shot from not even having a point.
