I think when McQuaid or Claesson are healthy Pionk needs to sit for a few.

Guy needs to be stronger on the boards and in coverage if they’re going to deploy him like a defensive defenseman. If not then he needs to be sheltered. He screened Lundqvist on the first goal instead of clearing his man and then the third goal his poor, weak play was an abomination.
TDA had another nice game. The pair of him and Skjei is good. I also like Smith-Shatty as a pair. Staal-Pionk is just not good.

Nice of Kreider to wake up. He had a good third. Hayes was very good again. I honestly don’t know if they should move Hayes. I know assets and everything but he’s youngish, wants to be a Ranger and he’s a damn good hockey player.

Seemed bad because of what happened. He LOST a battle true, but doesn't the other guy get paid too? I also will venture a guess that he was probably on the ice for 2:30 out of last 3 minutes. He probably was gassed and understandable that he was chopped and had it stolen. Sorry, agree to disagree. What's with all the hate for Neal? Just don't get it.

Long live the king...

I have the idea really that DeAngelo's alleged 'attitude problems' are way overblown. I haven't really seen anything very concerning since he's been in the Rangers organization.

To me it's simply that someone has to be thrown to the wolves or into the deep end or however you want to say it. Someone has to face the Ovechkin's, Crosby's, Stamkos's, McDavid's, Matthews, Kane's etc. etc. Elite players are going to get prime ice time and lots of it. It's become Pionk's lot in life to be the right side guy the Rangers throw up against those guys. If not him then who else? He's in over his head but he's also shown he can play big minutes with energy and not wear down and he's kind of doing it not so much because he earned it but by default. He competes hard and you can see it just in the way he'll be flying around the rink in the last minute of a game even if he's already played 25 hard minutes.

I think Pionk doing that job does give DeAngelo breathing space to grow his game and I think he needs it. Whenever the Kuznetsov, Ovechkin, Wilson line are on they are almost always going to have the lion's share of possession time and they are always going to get shots. The same with Crosby's and Malkin's lines and the same with Matthews' etc. The guys that line up against them are getting the job of keeping those numbers down. It's not really a nice job but someone's got to do it.

I think part of the challenge of evaluating certain guys, especially on defense, is that they're probably playing above their ideal peak role. That's to say nothing about where they are now.

IMO, Skjei is a second pairing defenseman who is being asked to be a number one defenseman. Similarly, Pionk is a guy who I project as more of a third pairing guy on a good team, maybe a borderline second pairing defenseman. He's too is playing above that ideal role.

Ok, 3 stars for real:

1. Lundqvist
2. Zuccarello
3. The MSG camera guy panning to Fast after every play after his **** up that resulted in SJ tying it

If there is any accountability, Fast comes out next game and Buchnevich goes back in.
Accountability? Are you serious right now? Jesper? The guy makes his FIRST BONEHEADED PLAY EVER, certainly the 1st that I could recall........and you want him benched? Really? Wow.

Secondly, there were like 3 icings afterwards and they still ended up winning. All it did was give SJ a point and prolonged the game "if" he would've put it in the net (not a given).

Edit: okay officially Sorry Crow. (I guess I eat Crow too!) Lol. I guess I am a little too attached to my man Jesper. I have to be better than that.

Oh boy, the irony of telling me I might have recency bias while you're arguing that Pionk is a better player than Shattenkirk is too much for me.

Shattenkirk has played 548 NHL games and has 348 points in his career. That's a 52 point pace. NHL defensemen that score at a 52 point pace over that large of a sample size are unquestionably talented offensive defensemen.

Pionk has played what, 35 games in his career? He's shown some flashes but we still don't even know what he is let alone have enough evidence to show he's a better player than Shattenkirk. Come on man.

Well this I totally agree with. He's not a defensive defenseman, he needs to be somewhat sheltered and get favorable zone starts, not eating tough minutes.
If THAT even becomes the case, then it will be awesome for our Rangers moving forward. That means we have "better" in front of him. Agree that he has NOT been undressed in any kind of way in a role that probably isn't "best suited" for his offensive abilities. Seems they're molding him into what McD had left behind......we do need that you know.

Is "just living" good enough?

Shouldn't it be "long play the King"?

I was under the impression that the phrase "Long live the King" was standard term of endearment for the respective majesty in whatever realm one lived during the middle ages, or it was said in some time piece movie in the 50s, and was repeated thereafter.

Either way, I didn't invent it.

But that’s sort of my point. Shattenkirk is old now. He’s regressed. He’s not the player he once was. Pionk is playing harder minutes than Shattenkirk, and is still doing better than him.

Shattenkirk was brought here to be a #1/#2 defenseman, and he’s struggling in a bottom 4 role. Pionk is supposed to be a bottom 4 defenseman, yet he’s doing better than Shattenkirk in a #1 defenseman role. And he’s being paid much less to do it.

The excuses have dried up for Shattenkirk. He no longer has a knee injury. Sure, he had a good game today. And one other one this season, but that’s about it. Just another supposed “star” player coming to New York and falling below expectations.
But hopefully now, he will really get it going. Let's say for arguments sake that his injury "is still lingering mentally". Seems he hasn't been playing with tons of confidence, been better lately.....so let's hope he ramps it up.....because I am so "absolutely down" for trading HIM at the deadline.

Find a young upcoming team trying to get into the PO's for the 1st time in a while (or ever, lol) pay some of his salary and grab a 1st on out the door. Honestly, I don't want him here, it's just not a good fit with what we are trying to do. He's holding back ADA and taking away his much needed experience.

Did you see my post a few minutes later? Take a chill pill.

Staal incase anyone is confused is our captain, doesn't have the C but he isnt sitting no matter how much we want him to. Pionk has his warts but hes pretty decent most of the time, hes learning and I'm ok with him in the lineup. DeAngelo has to stay in, which to me leaves us with.

Skjei DeAngelo
Smith Shattenkirk
Staal Pionk

Not sure how that would affect us in "any conceivable way".
We're not gonna make PO's but if we did even less likely we would play them for the cup. LMAO.

This has nothing to do with playing them in the cup final. When the Rangers win I prefer to win it in regulation so that the win is more significant. GTFO with your condescending "LMAO".

I fell asleep but the numbers say we played a great game, so good on them winning this one.

Kreider is my man.
No offense intended towards YOU Machinehead......but there is something so "terribly wrong" about that statement. I get the whole analytics thing (not that I understand it all) and has it's place......but this is not baseball. Baseball is a numbers game and there is oh so much more to hockey than that.

It's entirely possible that a team could have a horrific team game and win, and vice versa despite what the "numbers say" and the bottom line with numbers is ALWAYS the final score. Right?

I’m trying to understand Pionk’s mins vs DeAngelo and I just cannot see what this coaching staff sees. The underlying numbers and eye test show me a kid constantly on the ice for goals against and scoring chances against. I see him getting pp time over Shattenkirk when the pp is. Ice cold. I just don’t get it.

Chytil has to go to Hartford right away. Before this gets any worse. If 8 mins with Cody Mcleod is all you can get him please make the move. This is being handled horribly.

Great game for Hank.
Yes, either bring up someone that can play 14 minutes along Chyil and whomever else so we can almost roll 4 lines, or send the kid down. Playing with less talented players does him NO GOOD, but with that said he seems overwhelmed a bit on top2 lines AND McCleod really hasn't played that badly. Seems he gets chances and is ALWAYS if front of the net. So I'm not gonna blast Cody......there just has to be a better solution.

Yeah buddy......you are right (I think), I was actually making a pun in regard to that term. Was supposed to be witty. Sorry.

Yes I did, so sorry for the rant. Was literally shocked that you said that, just like Sam had said; "I was shocked" in response to Joe's statement of "it was the 1st time he could remember Jesper making a bad play like that". My sentiments the same even before Joe said it. So sorry, again.

Okay, gonna laugh less around here. My LMAO wasn't directed at you(although I could understand that maybe you would think that) I meant LMAO at the "possibility" of our Rangers playing SJ for Lord Stanley.

Wow, we won and should be in better moods. I get your thinking about regulation wins are better......just doesn't matter to me about SJ getting one......in fact I like SJ, opposed to the Kings or Anaheim for that matter.

P.S. Anyone who knows me would NEVER say that I am any kind of a condescending person.....understandable that you don't KNOW ME, per sé, but please accept my apology nonetheless.

Your GTFO, really did scare me though and was much stronger than even a misunderstood LMAO. So, are we good now? Can we be better friends now?

I don't come here to make enemies and technically I don't even come here to make "friends". We are simply Rangers fans and going through some uncharted territory here.

Sorry, I misunderstood what you meant. It read to me like "LMAO at this idiot thinking it matters that the Sharks got the extra point". Either way, I don't think anyone else should care that the Sharks got a point. But to me when the Sharks finish the season if they have the record many think they'll have I would be happier if we're responsible for 1 regulation loss and 1 OT loss rather than 2 losses in OT/SO.

This is not how Henriks career is supposed to wrap up. This effort cannot be sustained on his part. He's going to hit the wall if he has to be superman every night.
That said, at the end of this one, all I could think of is that scene in Gladiator where Russell Crowe yells out "Are you not entertained???"
