I fell asleep but the numbers say we played a great game, so good on them winning this one.

Kreider is my man.

I’m trying to understand Pionk’s mins vs DeAngelo and I just cannot see what this coaching staff sees. The underlying numbers and eye test show me a kid constantly on the ice for goals against and scoring chances against. I see him getting pp time over Shattenkirk when the pp is. Ice cold. I just don’t get it.

Chytil has to go to Hartford right away. Before this gets any worse. If 8 mins with Cody Mcleod is all you can get him please make the move. This is being handled horribly.

Great game for Hank.

I'm not going to beat up on ADA.
The thing I notice, without looking at stats is this. ADA is one elusive line changer. Im mean it's unreal. It's incredible shift discipline and I dont know if it's by design or if its the thing the coaches were trying to drill into him or what. But his shifts are short, and they seemed last night to be almost entirely in the offensive end of the ice. Then the sharks get the puck and he's gone. Someone else is out there. I couldn't believe how he was pulling it off. I didnt notice a ton of chances for him to have to be skating backwards or face a forecheck or sustained zone pressure. Pionk seems to be doing all of those things a lot.

I think everybody knows what this is really about, and if they don’t know, well let me tell you there is going be quite a lot of confusion about it when it’s revealed. Until then regardless of opinion or what the reason is, the reason will unveil it self and be known. Until then we will just have to know what it is no matter what it is or isnt.

fun game, but why are they letting this coach ruin Chytil? under 9 minutes of icetime, only 2 points and 17 shots in 12 games? Either you play him or you let him play in AHL.

The coach is not ruining Chytil- the “rush him into the NHL” has him in a tough spot. As I’ve said many time, the NHL is not the place for talent to develop, the minor leagues are. He should be in the minors, but honestly, Chytil looks and plays like a player with tremendous holes in his hockey skill set and I’m beginning to wonder what he may turn into.

I'm surprised Howden isn't getting more love in here. His line played an absolutely fantastic game and were hounds on the puck all night. Namestnikov deserves props too for some of the gutsy plays he made to block shots, and it was great to see him bust his ass to beat Burns to a loose puck all the way from the defensive zone.

If this team can start stringing together more efforts like this, I won't care about the losses. This is one of the best games they've played all season.

Unfortunately we tend to focus on guys who show up on the score sheet, but this game is exactly what I like about Howden.

Even when the points don’t come, he finds a way to contribute to the game.

I went to bed almost immediately after the game. The Rangers really played well in this one. Some mistakes yeah but they were pressing San Jose all over the ice the entire game. Apart from his early goal Burns wasn't much of a factor and neither was Erik Karlsson. The Rangers took away a lot of space from those two and San Jose had to fight their way up the ice with regularity. For them Timo Meier was particularly outstanding. Anyway there were no passengers and I was particularly pleased with Jimmy Vesey in this one as he was as involved as I've ever seen him--continually grinding and keeping plays alive and not giving up and even was good on pk shifts.

And yet we could have easily lost this one. The last second of regulating tying goal by Hertl. Henrik wanted this f***ing game and made a grade double A+ save to end in OT and then just shut down (as in gave them nothing) San Jose in the shootout.

Our best players also played up to their level. Kreider--2 goals. Zuccarello--a goal and an assist. Skjei a primary assist that was a wonderful play. Hayes was getting chances and defending like a motherf***er. Zibanejad was also really good and when your best players are doing that the rest of the team follows.

Ada isn’t defending a whole lot not because he’s jumping off the ice it’s because he’s usually driving offense. His passes out of the zone are just a thing of beauty. Hard fast and crisp always. He makes plays at the offensive blue line.

Pionk is always defending and badly.

I have only 2 guesses.

1. ADA is severely disliked in that room. By coaches and players alike.

2. Pionk is being showcased. It’s my only explanation for his mins and even more so his power play mins over Shattenkirk right now.

And he easily could have too. He showed that he was more willing to get between the hashmarks and shoot the puck tonight, and as you know, that’s where he’s most effective. It’s not like got sheltered last night either-hell you really can’t be against SJ. He had pretty equal usage against their whole top-6.

I'm most impressed with his faceoff ability, you dont usually see that in a guy his age. Hes right up there with Zib as to who you want taking a crucial draw.

Pionk is put into situations where he is way more over his head than DeAngelo. He's averaging 23 minutes a night in all situations and against the other team's top players and he's an undersized second year pro. He's not a first pairing defenseman. No D on the Rangers is and at the same time he is the most inexperienced D on the team with DeAngelo the next guy behind him.

Part of the reason Pionk gets that usage IMO is he's got the energy to play and battle all night long. He doesn't seem to wear down. Another reason is he defends aggressively which IMO if you're a smaller, weaker D--getting on top of your opponent and smothering plays fast is better than just laying back and letting the play come to you. He's going to bleed shots though--he's kind of like the boxer who wears out his opponent by getting beat up and coming back late. He has a lot to learn still though--last night's another lesson for him.

As far as the Rangers showcasing Pionk--not at all. I think the Rangers coaching staff loves him. As far as DeAngelo--no he's not getting the same ice time but Pionk taking the harder minutes puts him in a position where all Tony has to do is do his job and do the things he does best--he's getting breathing space to grow and he's been looking real good.
