I’m not even sure the majority of the fans aren’t okay with what the team is. Shanahan and his band of merry men(minus Tavares) could be a thing for another decade. The thought of that playing out is a little depressing but it is a possibility.
Seem more and more fans are happy with watching flashy losers year after year than building a team that can actually have a chance at winning a cup, but I’m not one of them……….

We have 11 mil in John Tavares doing absolutely nothing. That guy, unfortunately, is the biggest issue and started the beginning of the end.
At the time there was no need for a second line centre on the team, if that money was invested into the D this team would be light years ahead of where they’re at right now……..

For such a tough, dynamic player in his day it's incredible what an indecisive, flaccid executive he turned into, afraid to pivot from a plan that for (checks calendar when JT was signed) SIX YEARS HASN'T WORKED.

The whole lot of them can go for all I care, this team has been crippled beyond repair.
Just goes to show that if your a good apple doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be a good orange. Happens all the time……..

He was fired because of a failed money grab and power play.

Even with 5 consecutive seasons of playoff failure, he was on track to get extended.

That's the lay of the land here in Toronto, failure is rewarded tenfold.
Perspective……….Boy Wonder was one press conference from being extended, Shanahan’s fav footwear is definitely flip flops………

Guys, does anyone seriously know what his daily responsibilities are?

What does he make?

His contract expires 24/25.
He lives in New York for christ’s sake, and who snatches a teammat’s wife????

There’s no one higher up that knows enough or cares enough to fire Shanahan. All they see is profit, profit, profit. Why should they bother doing anything? The building is still full, even in this economy, people are also gobbling up the core 4 by buying merchandise. To them, everything is fine.
Larry Tannebaum says hi………

We put all our money into 4 forwards not built for the NHL playoffs and now all the depth acquired to support that is either aging or falling down the depth chart in terms of where they should be.
That’s not a recipe for 4 rounds win the Cup. I’m sorry for those who think it is. But many do.

He thought he was getting fired last year so he is on thin ice. Am I allowed to say I have a souce?
I hope your “source” is correct about him being on thin ice……….

And it’ll get worse as the core ages, just look how JT has regressed………

Was it Chelios that said Shanny was good at brown nosing and politics?

This past summer, Shanahan had an opportunity to toss a grenade in the room by replacing the coach and/or looking at trading a core piece. The team wasn't good in the playoffs despite winning a round and we are still seeing the same issues.
Tossing a grenade into the dressing room, I like your thinking on fixing the problem……..

And stealing other player’s wives………

and who were these magical players that were available this past summer ? also what assets did you boy leave to acquire them , do you realize along with the 1sts he constantly dealt he moved our next four 2nd rd picks

did you also notice how pathetic the summer of Dubas in Pitt was ?

Brodie was good for about 2 yrs . he slid last year and looks cooked this year . McCabe is a 3rd pairing guy . Gio who he paid two 2nds and a 3rd for was nothing more than a 6/7 when we got him and is done now so pretty much all his adds are trash now

but forget about all this , what i have to know is how anyone could look at the team he inherited compared to what he left at the time he was fired and come to the conclusion that he's a genius and should be worshiped , it truly boggles my mind how devoted his fan club is considering how massive failure he was here
He could have went after Cole and Soucy like Rutherfield did.

It really helped their backend.

Probably don't have Bertuzzi as a result but without Klingberg and Reaves, he could have still inked Domi.

Hindsight is easy. Bertuzzi and Domi were great in last years playoffs. Hopefully they get a chance to do the same this year.

Cole and Soucy are 3rd pairing type guys making 3m each and Soucy is better than Benoit but i doubt Cole is so while they would have helped it wouldn't have moved the needle much .

What helped Vancover's D much more was trading a 1st for Hronek late last season .

The team also couldn't add many long term contracts without knowing how much AM and Willie would molest us for and before we knew if/how much the cap would go up .

It would have been great if ROR would have wanted to come back at what he signed for in Nash and to a lesser degree if Schenn would have re-signed for half his salary and a year less but nether wanted to be here so it is what it is .

13.5 x 8 for Shanny

That's what 1 playoff win in 10 years gets you in Toronto
A team good enough to get into the playoffs.
Enough people to tell you "as long as you get to the playoffs, you always have a chance"
Being 'good enough' to sell out the games, enough stars to keep selling merchandiser.
Of course, the building being full and ratings being high.
Good enough or enough of a 'story' to have prime spots in local media (print, radio, TV)

How much more can an ownership group that cares about $$ really want? He's doing a GREAT job for them.

If I'm ownership/decision makers at a high level, do I really WANT to change the current situation for a slight increase in chances at a cup, but also a slight chance than any of the above goes away? Nope, that is what the FANS would do, I'm sure the top decision makers are pretty comfortable just the way things are.

Hours a day on the phone with Paul Kariya playing “no, YOU hang up!”, the occasional limp wristed press conference, wearing cardigans and fake glasses on camera doing his best to look like he’s been busy - kind a modern take on the loose Burke tie look.

I think there is a good chance without interference, Dubas would have either fired Keefe or traded a core member. He didn't exactly give Keefe a vote of confidence either.

of course you think there was interference . lol

i have to ask , since you believe Shanny was pulling the strings all these years why is it you worship Dubas and not Shanahan ?

Unless we miss the playoffs this year, I don’t see how Shanahan gets fired. And even then I am not 100% sure he will be.
Anything short of a game 6 ECF will lead to Shanahan getting fired.

Winning a round isn't enough, winning 2 rounds isn't enough. A competitive conference final is the bare minimum, if that doesn't happen time to move on from the Shanaplan. He's had a decade, that's enough.

Also a good chance he would've traded a core guy for someone like Karlsson. Dubas is/was an idiot.

Based on results he deserves to be fired. He's also the one who hired Dubas who shares at least equally the amount of blame for what this team has become.

Keefe deserves to be fired because he's a poor coach in many important situations. He's not responsible for the same level of failures as Dubas and Shanahan though.

That said, I doubt Shanahan gets fired. He will last as long as Treliving lasts. He's been a good money maker for MLSE.

It's honestly pretty amazing the amount of rope Shanny gets, any other executive would have gotten the axe after10 years of nothing but spending money to show for it. (and one solitary round win)

I think it goes to show MLSE doesn’t value winning the cup as top priority. They value making money and keeping revenue high. Winning the cup would be a bonus. IMO I think Shanny has a job because he has kept the core together and that’s the only thing MLSE cares about. They want to retain their 4 cash cows. Marner, Nylander, Matthews and I’ll put Rielly in there make the organization so much money.

It's weird. I want to agree with this and there's talk MLSE doesn't want to pay big bucks for a fired coach for example. But on the other hand they spend lavishly on amenities and staff. They have a bigger front office than anyone. They have top of the line sports science and medical staff. All the players on the team and Marlies are always raving about the accommodations and meals and stuff compared to other franchises. They seemingly spend a ton behind the scenes that has nothing to do with making them money. They could cut all that drastically and still trot out their stars every night to fill the building and generate interest in the team. I think it's more incompetence and confusion than a pure "what makes us the most money" scheme.

Never have. Its far more profitable to build an annual playoff team than an all in 2-3 cup push that may or may not work out (followed by a rebuild).
