Which sucks. A budget team needs to draft well in order to remain competitive. Trading picks for cash is not a good long term strategy.

Well, I fee that the organization decided that they needed this trade to keep our assets. Keeping what we have acquired through the draft is more important than picks, in my opinion.

Initial reaction was that I didn't like it.

We're the Sens afraid of Zib asking for big money next year? We're they happy that Brassard will be the cheaper option in the new few years due to Brassards front-loaded contract? We're the Sens not happy with Mika's off-season progression? A lot of questions that could tell us why this trade happened.

I think Zib was one of our x-factors this season. If he improved like he has the potential too then he could have taken us to a higher tier. With him gone we just lost our x-factor but we did get a guy who we know will perform like an upper tier 2nd line center-men.

I am not thrilled with the trade. I don't like that we had to add a 2nd, but I can understand it if Mika's training wasn't up to par this summer.

WHAT. THE. FUDGE.

Someone check on Mika Hoffbinejad.....

Funny enough....He was my first concern too lol

I'm gussing they didnt like the way Zibby meshed with Ryan or maybe they were concerned about zibby's conditioning.

Looks like the sens being cheap was a huge factor too

My intial reaction was that it was a bad trade but i can now see that it Brassard might be a better fit

As a team which lives and dies through the draft, our casual attitude towards moving 2nd round picks is concerning.

This. I'll never understand why one of the best drafting teams in the league tosses away quality picks so carelessly.

I'm not surprised though. Murray loved wasting draft picks. Why expect anything different from Murray's protege?

So Brassard is signed until 2019, and his actual salary is very affordable for the final 2 seasons, and the Sens only have to pay him $3 million for this season given the first $2 million in his salary was already paid in signing bonuses by the Rangers.

Meanwhile, the Sens would have had to pay Zibby $3.25 million this season, he's RFA in the summer and you better believe he'll be looking for more than $3.5 million in salary. How do we have to "wait and see?" Heck, part of this could be to fit a Hoffman contract for this season and next.

And in the end, the Sens only got a little better on paper while taking a player who is 5 and a half years older than Zibanjead, and had to give up a 2nd rounder to do it while getting a 7th rounder in return? Yeah, hard to get really stoked here. Perhaps Brassard will mesh better with Ryan, but until we see if that happens :dunno:

When Ottawa traded for Turris people said Ottawa lost the trade big time now tell me how is that deal working for Phoenix.

I would be very surprised if the Sens traded Zibby based on his gf moving to NYC. It might have played a role in it, but I doubt it was what started the process of moving Mika to the Big Apple.

Silfverberg, Lehner, Zibanejad, guess EK65 is next?

Seriously though, he was good friends with Milan, and I assume he had some affinity for his fellow Swedes. And Boudreau and Crawford touted their European experience, saying they had different motiviations and different cultures that they were now familiar with. Then we ship out our Swedish 2nd line centre.

We have to start making big strides in becoming a playoff team.

This moves is clearly an attempt to do this.

If we paid a 2nd in order to be able to afford Brassard and Hoffman, so be it, I do that move every time.

One thing I do know, I bet I'm going to ***** a lot less about Brassard than Mika in the GDT's, although Mika is young so maybe its to be more expected.

Didn't we have a lot of people complaining that Dorion was sitting on his hands too much?

We wont know the winner of this trade for a few years probably.

Brassard is way better overall defensively than Zibby and is slightly better offensively. Lets be real here people might get on me for this but Brassard might actually be able to play with our wingers and bring consistency, something Zibby couldnt do enough. Also dont forget Zibby got 51 points playing on the top line for a lot of last year with Turries out. It would not surprise me if Zibby had less points playing with the rangers next year. I honestly feel like Zib will not get that much better than he is now at centre, meaning NYR might make him a winger which wouldnt work for us because we already have too many wingers. Brassard is also a left shot, something we really needed, and from what Rangers fans have said is a heart and soul guy who shows up when it matters. That second could be awesome but it could also be Hugh Jessiman so overall We win now and could lose slightly or make it a wash if Zib becomes the player he was supposed to be. I dont think hell ever be that consistent 1 C though

Well he looked fine with Hoff.

I'm not even THAT high on Zibby, but I think we could have got better value for him. Brassard is a good player, but he'll be 29 to start the season.

Can't underestimate Boucher's initial evaluations being a big factor in this trade. If he wasn't particularly impressed with what he saw in Zibby, that may very well have been the biggest reason why Dorion began the process of finding his replacement.

The thing I don't like here is giving up the 2nd. The lefty thing is great and he should really help the PP imo.

Anyone have a good handle on his fancy stats? I'm far too busy hunting Pokemon to look.
