We're already pretty young when you look at our core. Our vets are Methot, Smith, Phaenuf, Neil and Kelly.

Turris, Mac, Stone, Hoffman, Karlsson, Ceci, Lazar, Pageau are pretty yougn.

I don't mind gaining age becuase we have Brown and White in the pipeline.

29 means he still has 3 years of solid hockey in him.

Yeah, this is my thinking process as well. There are probably a few reasons to dislike this move and a few to like it. I don't see the age as a negative at all, so I'm just trying to gain perspective – is this a legit fear, or typical HF overrating youth?

Agreed. The Sens need to use 2nd-to-7th round picks as currency to compete. It is what it is.

Which sucks. A budget team needs to draft well in order to remain competitive. Trading picks for cash is not a good long term strategy.

Well not being funny, Zibby still couldn't fill in for that #2C job... Or the #1.

I like Brassards potential to fill in that #1 spot if we absolutely crap the bed again.

As far as I see it, we now have two low-end 1st line centers.

Excited to see if Brassard meshes with Ryan. We desperately needed two things up the middle:
1) a legit playmaker
2) a Left-Shot

Brassard is both of those things, is cheap, is potentially re-signable when his deal expires in 3 years (local ties), and makes us better now.

I don't like the 2nd round pick going back to NYR, but honestly, this deal isn't as crazy as some posters are insinuating. Brassard is flat-out better than Zibanejad right now, and might be the better player over the course of both of their careers. We'll just have to see how it plays out.

Are Brassards stats an anomaly, a product of another or legit?

I wouldn't expect 27 goals again... he had a very high shooting percentage compared to his norm. I say we can hope for ~18 goals and ~35 assists for the next year or two.

The people who are whining about this trade based solely on the money issue.....come on.

Most fans are happy when their GM manages to save a bit of money and get a good player in return. It's fine to dislike this trade for a variety of reasons, but the salary thing? Please.

Ok, take this with the usual "hearing it from a friend" business, but apparently, Mika's GF was moving to NYC to pursue something to do with fashion school or something...

So it may have been the Sens doing him a solid...

Again just something I heard. Not to be spread like gospel but from a usual source of mine who fills me in on Sens news.

I don't know how to feel about it. Say what you will about Zibby, but he was still young and had room to grow. He's in the same age range as Hoffman and Stone, and its only recently those two broke out. Zibby's been trending upwards, albeit slowly, for a couple of years now, and I'm not sure if Brassard is a big enough improvement to warrant making such a move for him.

Interesting if true. A Fisher-type move combined with maximizing the asset.

Doing him a solid while improving the team for next year and, bonus being paid out already, might clear money to spend on Hoffman/Ceci.

It does suck, but it can be offset a little bit by trading away assets for more picks if the team continues to miss the playoffs.

As a team which lives and dies through the draft, our casual attitude towards moving 2nd round picks is concerning.

Huh.

Not really a fan of this move; it makes us better now, but idk why we do this now. I'd have given Zibanejad one more year to raise his value then trade him.

Brassard doesn't make us a contender, small upgrade, but we get older. Only thing I can think of is this is intended to bridge us to when either White or Brown is ready for a top 6 role, and then we move one of Brassard or Turris (or both if all goes fantastically well).

To those claiming this is a financial move; how much do you think Zibanejad re-signs for? If he were to sign at 5 per, the cost for the next 3 years (this year included) comes up pretty much even. Basically, you have to expect Zibanejad to cost more than 5 mil per year after this season in order to save us money, but Schwartz, just signed for 5.35, so would Zibanejad get that much?

edit: my math was a bit off, more like 4.5 which I think Zib could probably get a bit more. Either way though, not convinced this saves us a lot of money (if any).

edit2: Also, I missed that the bonus is already paid, so yeah, we save a bit.

I agree. I personally love getting Brassard. Admittedly I'll always take the hard worker over the more skilled lazy player, just my personality.

But why the hell are we trading 2nds like their hot cakes? We are a very good team at drafting. That part of this really sucks.

Fine with me.

Brassard can play between two scoring wingers in Hoffman and Ryan. Ziby was always a shooting player, which made a weird dynamic when playing with Ryan because it would basically force Ryan to be the playmaker when he should be the triggerman.

Brassard can be a way better fit IMO. It lets Stone play with Turris, and it also gives options to switch Stone and Ryan when things get tough and not have the slow-footers in Zib and Ryan with Hoff.

Lets wait and see before making that claim.

So Brassard is signed until 2019, and his actual salary is very affordable for the final 2 seasons, and the Sens only have to pay him $3 million for this season given the first $2 million in his salary was already paid in signing bonuses by the Rangers.

Meanwhile, the Sens would have had to pay Zibby $3.25 million this season, he's RFA in the summer and you better believe he'll be looking for more than $3.5 million in salary. How do we have to "wait and see?" Heck, part of this could be to fit a Hoffman contract for this season and next.

And in the end, the Sens only got a little better on paper while taking a player who is 5 and a half years older than Zibanjead, and had to give up a 2nd rounder to do it while getting a 7th rounder in return? Yeah, hard to get really stoked here. Perhaps Brassard will mesh better with Ryan, but until we see if that happens :dunno:
