Once you take a look at Brassard's salary numbers and the fact the Rangers just paid his bonus, it all makes sense.

This is the kind of move the Sens need to make to try and remain competitive with such a cheap owner. Let other teams pay the front loaded part of a contract and then throw in a similar player plus some draft picks to land them.

I don't blame Dorion one bit for this one. This is our reality folks.

In a year or two, the Sens could be a 'cap' team but only be paying 75-80% of that number.

Yeah Brassard is the better player right now, but he's 5 years older than Zib and is an upcoming UFA. Zibanejad is still developing and is a cost-controlled future RFA. Zibanejad could be better than Brassard as early as next season.

Tell me, why the hell is the 2nd going from Ottawa to New York?

So Brassard is better right now. Zibby has the higher potential obviously.

Just had a big chat with a Rangers fan that I work with. He said that Brassard is by far one of the most liked Rangers player and then went on this long rant about how players underperform statistically in New York (compared it to the LA Kings) because of their playing style.

Brassard is a damn good player

And a 2nd?

We just got ****ed. This team really is committed to the status quo.

Don't really know how I feel about this deal... adding a 2nd round pick from our side doesn't really make sense to me, but I guess time will tell if it was worth it.

I remember the outcry here when we added a 2nd to Rundblad to get Turris... that turned out pretty well for us.

Brassard's playoff numbers look decent as well.

There's no way Zibanejad would have been paid THAT much more than 3.5mil unless he hit 70 points this year

This trade doesn't even make sense looking at it through a Melnyk cost-saving lens

wtf

Wow. Did not expect this.

I don't like trading Mika because I feel like he's a good player with quite a bit of potential left. On the other hand, Brassard is the better player at the moment and is probably far more consistent.

Gonna have to wait and see before I evaluate this trade.

Lost in all of this is that Zib can really get that DJ career off the ground now that he is in NYC.

But a serious question, does no one think Zibs production might actually be worse now that he is a Ranger?

I think I might like this trade.

Brassard is better NOW, and management probably has faith that White or Brown will develop into a #2C in a few years.

I'm more okay with this than I thought I'd be. Not a fan of the pick switch, but whatever.

Hoffman - Turris - Stone
MacArthur - Brassard - Ryan
Smith - Pageau - Lazar
Puempel - McCormick - Paul

Methot - Karlsson
Phaneuf - Ceci
Wideman - Boroweicki

Anderson
Hammond

That is a lineup that can play into the playoffs. I mean we had to use Pageau as our first line center because Zibanejad couldn't do it. At least Brassard can step up if needed. We are very much running more of a 1a 1b line. If management thinks we can contend in the next few years I am fine with the trade.

I was hoping we'd find a way to get Brassard due to the Rangers being in cap hell

Paying the second round pick on top of it stings right now but we got the better player

Brassard being a lefty is HUGE

We now have Turris and Brassard as one-two punch and both are 55-60 point players

The move hurts cause Zibanejad, if he becomes as good as he can be, will be a monster but I have faith in Dorion ability as a scout: Brassard will be a much fit with Ryan

GREAT trade - good on Dorion. Everyone keeps talking about Zib's "potential". He has now been in the NHL for four seasons - he is who he is. We got the better player in the trade, so we definitely win the trade. Maybe Zib wakes up in NY, but I think he continues on as a guy who teases you with his potential, but who has limited hockey sense. On the positive side for Zib, plenty more DJ opportunities in NYC as opposed to Ottawa.

Oh, we also took on more salary in this deal, but everyone feel free to continue with the "Eugene won't spend money" meme...

The Sens waited until Brassard was paid his $2million dollar bonus on July 15th by the Rangers. Money was most certainly an issue w/ the trade.

Zibs is being paid 3.25 million this year, and Brassard $3million (after $2 million bonus paid by NYR). Brassard only has 2 years of 3.5 million after this year, very economical in cost.

To be fair some of the richest teams want other teams to play part of the salary as well.

IMO we are better to start this year with Brassard over Zib... after that we will see.
It's possible this could give us the little nudge we need. We are going to like Brassard!

I don't know why I am surprised. Brassard is an Ottawa guy and his contract was front-loaded and his signing bonus for this year is already paid for. This is the prototypical Sens move - overpay in assets for a local kid who is cheaper than other options out there.
