I feel very confident in saying that the Sens are a better team today than yesterday. Maybe not 3 years down the line but I think overall Brassard is a better fit with this current roster.

I'm getting the feeling that Boucher and Dorion think they have a shot here over the next few years to do something big, which I'm happy about. We keep saying as fans that this team needs to prove to Karlsson that they want to win to keep him around and this type of move signals that to me.

The team looks really strong on paper right now for the next couple years. We need a couple depth players or breakouts from younger guys but it's nothing we can't address midseason through a few minor trades if things go well with the rest of the club.

Not that the World Championships mean a lot but Brassard (along with Stone) was really one of the standouts for Canada even among the likes of ROR, McDavid, Perry and Marchand. Dude is ranked 36th overall in points over the last 2 years between Perry and Kessel. It really can't be stressed enough how good a player he is. I'd like him to start the year playing with Ryan.

Big thing to me is he adds options for the coach. We lacked a LH center that could create offense. This will help the PP. I really like our top 6, though we still lack an elite center, we have a pretty strong 1a 1b situation.

Hoffman - Turris - Stone; lights out crazy good before Turris got hurt. Right handed center passing to a speedy LW that can snipe.

MacArthur - Brassard - Ryan; Good left handed play making center should be able to dish the puck to Ryan and create some offense. Brassard seems better at gaining the zone than Zibanejad was, and has more patience, so this will hopefully mean less "one and done" rushes from our second line.

Smith - Pageau - Lazar; Smith and Pageau had some great chemistry last year even without Stone. Lazar can hopefully find his offensive game, but if nothing else this should be an effective shut down line.

4th line is where I'm not sure what we'll see,

Pyatt - Kelly - Neil?
Paul - Kelly -Neil?
Puempel - Kelly - Dzingel?
Dzingel - Paul - Kelly?

Lots of options for Boucher, I suspect that a lot will depend on training camp, and who out of Puempel, Paul, Pyatt, and Dzingel impresses.

Would have preferred trading Ryan instead of Z-Bad.

So would everyone, unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

I don't want to say Ryan will look like a new player with a guy like Brassard, especially with how I thought he'd be with Spezza, but I am 100% confident in saying that Ryan-Brassard is a much better combo than either Turris-Ryan or Zib-Ryan.

Brassard also helps our powerplay immensely, another thing that is going unnoticed.

Sucks to lose Zib, no doubt. The 2nd round pick isn't a huge deal right now, it's really not having a guy like Dahlen/Chlapik/Gagne 5-6 years down the road (really excited for Dahlen).

We are, undoubtedly, better off talent wise, budget wise, and future contract wise after this trade.

That would leave a huge hole at rw
Assuming we wouldn't get a rw better than Ryan back.
Not a bad idea to get a guy who almost certainly will raise Ryan's level of play. Zib couldn't play with anyone.
Ryan should now have 2 centres he has chemistry with.

I don't understand how Brassard is "consistent" and Zibanejad is "inconsistent"

Brassard turns 29 in September... And has only hit 60Pts once in his career

Because not to go all Toews on this response but an impact on a shift/game/season can go beyond points.

You consistently prove that all you do is look at statistics.

It's quite entertaining actually :handclap:

Well Zibanejad consistently came into camp out of shape and would fail to register almost any offensive production for the first 10-20 games of the season. You're probably on to something.

Ok why do you suppose the sens drafted Zibanejad in the first place... He had what 8 points his draft year. Why would teams bother hiring scouts if they can just look at points. Why isn't Corey Locke playing in the NHL right now?

Yep, Kyle Dubas is being mentored under Lou Lamiorello so he can learn the fine art of going on NHL.com to see end of season point totals. Moneypuck, I'm not gonna pretend to understand it!!

Because Corey Locke could not produce the "numbers" in the NHL... You think if he could put up 40-50 points he would not be in the NHL?

It's all about the "numbers"

Analytics is such a flawed way to look at an individual player. It amazes me how many people have bought into it.

Its just a utility people use to help their argument for a player that they don't watch much.

It does add some significance but if used without context or used exclusively than it could be misleading.

I personally don't like it that much.

This is going to happen. It's the reality of the industry. Da Costa doing business.

RE: poor defensively, he definitely struggled a bit this past season. But I've always felt that fear to be a bit overblown. He was exposed to first lines this past season, which led to a Phaneuf-like situation where he was being asked to punch above his weight class. If we can get Brass settled into a second-line spot with Ryan, I think we'll see his defensive play improve.

*sigh*

Please don't say that. It was bad enough seeing Silf have good games (seemed to happen whenever Bobby was slumping...just to make it that much worse!)..........I really don't want to go through that again.

Dammit. :(

NYR GM Jeff Gorton's said yesterday's deal emphasized decision to get "younger and faster and not give up too much."

Lol

Johnathan Toews put up 58 points last season and 66 two seasons ago.

But since hockey is all about numbers, Toews isn't that good. Definitely not a 1C. Nope.

Got it.

Thanks.

I learned so much today. Who knew that just looking at stats gave you all you need to know, and actually watching hockey is useless.

2 seasons ago, Toews got 66 points and Turris got 64 points. That makes them equal value, right? Since their numbers are the same, they must be the exact same player.

The help on the PP alone is enough for me.

We only had 1 playmaker in the top 6 was Stone, now we have Brassard. He helps our offensive dynamic a lot more than a guy like Zib.

Karlsson and Brassard on the PP should be very formidable.
