Let's not act like Leaf fans weren't all over talking about it as a bad contract and using it as evidence of Dubas being smart for not extending him.

The under reported story here is Dubas' negotiations with Hyman soured and he didn't even want to facilitate a sign and trade with Ken Holland. And Dubas inexplicably is an associate GM on Team Canada now. So there's probably some bad blood there.

The comparison to Kunitz-Crosby as a Team Canada duo makes sense, and Hyman is a better player than Kunitz was.

McDavid has been known to have chemistry issues with players at times too. To avoid transplanting an established great thing is a mistake. This is a Nagano Olympics roster tactic, not a Vancouver Olympics one

Regardless, a huge benefit of Hyman is that he is a hard nosed player who attacks the net, and unmatched effort level. It would complement the forward group really well. I think he will be on the team somehow.

FYI even during his cold streak offensively, all his underlying numbers were fantastic. The pucks just weren't going in

"Kunitz-Crosby as a Team Canada duo"

From my admittedly shit memory, Kunitz played on the 3rd line away from Crosby and was fantastic in that role. More than showed he belonged. The Kunitz-Crosby connection being the reason Kunitz was on the team was/is overstated as evidenced by the actual games. Hyman needs to make it on his own and IMO has already done enough. Thankfully it's a meaningless tournament anyway.

Oddly I have a rough memory as well, as it seems Kunitz wasn't part of the 2010 but instead the 2014 Socchi Olympics. It's the same principle though. Team Canada liked to take small chunks of great teams, like a bunch of Hawks and Sharks, and yes, Kunitz and Crosby. I didn't see evidence of Kunitz being separated (that doesn't mean they weren't). I did see line by line breakdowns and the talk was of a line of Bergeron-Crosby-Kunitz

It seems like this 4 nations tournament will have even less time for players to gel, so I don't see why they wouldn't do the same thing. Avoid taking one player. Take chunks from great rosters where it makes sense

are we still crying about how he didnt make the team?

either way he should be trying to score goals for the Oilers. Not trying to make team Canada.

Dundas
Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman, Wendyl Clarke, Tim Kerr, Martin St Louis, Mark Schieflie......just to name a few players that who've been left off TC over the years.
