Let's not act like Leaf fans weren't all over talking about it as a bad contract and using it as evidence of Dubas being smart for not extending him.

The under reported story here is Dubas' negotiations with Hyman soured and he didn't even want to facilitate a sign and trade with Ken Holland. And Dubas inexplicably is an associate GM on Team Canada now. So there's probably some bad blood there.

The comparison to Kunitz-Crosby as a Team Canada duo makes sense, and Hyman is a better player than Kunitz was.

McDavid has been known to have chemistry issues with players at times too. To avoid transplanting an established great thing is a mistake. This is a Nagano Olympics roster tactic, not a Vancouver Olympics one

Regardless, a huge benefit of Hyman is that he is a hard nosed player who attacks the net, and unmatched effort level. It would complement the forward group really well. I think he will be on the team somehow.

FYI even during his cold streak offensively, all his underlying numbers were fantastic. The pucks just weren't going in

"Kunitz-Crosby as a Team Canada duo"

From my admittedly shit memory, Kunitz played on the 3rd line away from Crosby and was fantastic in that role. More than showed he belonged. The Kunitz-Crosby connection being the reason Kunitz was on the team was/is overstated as evidenced by the actual games. Hyman needs to make it on his own and IMO has already done enough. Thankfully it's a meaningless tournament anyway.

Oddly I have a rough memory as well, as it seems Kunitz wasn't part of the 2010 but instead the 2014 Socchi Olympics. It's the same principle though. Team Canada liked to take small chunks of great teams, like a bunch of Hawks and Sharks, and yes, Kunitz and Crosby. I didn't see evidence of Kunitz being separated (that doesn't mean they weren't). I did see line by line breakdowns and the talk was of a line of Bergeron-Crosby-Kunitz

It seems like this 4 nations tournament will have even less time for players to gel, so I don't see why they wouldn't do the same thing. Avoid taking one player. Take chunks from great rosters where it makes sense

are we still crying about how he didnt make the team?

either way he should be trying to score goals for the Oilers. Not trying to make team Canada.

Mark Messier, Steve Yzerman, Wendyl Clarke, Tim Kerr, Martin St Louis, Cam Neely, Mark Schieflie......just to name a few players who've been left off TC over the years.
Zack Hyman? Not exactly shocking.

I’m not losing any sleep over Hyman and Skinner not going, they can use the rest. Bouch should not make the team.

Tournament is a farce anyways. Best on best should find a way to have guys such as Drai, Pasta, Kuch, and Krill playing as well

Pfft

In 2006 we left Crosby staal, spezza and brier off the team.

Crosby had 102 points staal 100 spezza was on pace for 109, Daniel brier was on pace for 99 points. lol we sat out 4 100 point players.

Hyman is a worse/similar player to Kunitz

No idea where your getting him being better from.

Kunitz was a 50-60 pt player before joining the Pens (good top 6er) like Hyman

Had some amazing years with a generational talent who was the best player in the league from 2010-2015 like Hyman has with Mcdavid

Had some good/great playoff series and went deep into the playoffs like hyman has with the Oilers.

They are very similar players tbh down to playstyles.

Hyman could have made team Canada based on Mcdavid chemistry/fit but talent wise like Kunitz he shouldnt be on the team.

Skinner was not even a consideration.

Yup, quite a few of them on here stated it would age "terribly" due to his playing style
Matthews said he's not good enough for first line duty...... taking a shot at Babcock

They have hard nosed guys that will drive the net. I get Hyman does that too but it's not as if they didn't address that with the players they selected

Ah, so you're quoting one random Twitter account with 1k followers and acting like this opinion is held by a large percentage of hockey fans or somehow important in any way? Actually you're misquoting him not that it matters.
"Said no one ever"
Shows someone in fact saying it
"Says only one person"

Lmfao.

I very much agree with the last part there. This is team Canada so we are talking elite or near elite players in every position (except in net, strangely). So the argument is the chemistry aspect, especially because McDavid has shown in the past that he doesn't just lift players around him. Who he gels with isn't so simple.

As for the comparison to Kunitz, sure maybe I'm off but not by a lot. Its mostly a big enough margin of error to make the comparison impossible. Hyman had an obvious different path to his current success, slowly working his way up from a bottom six role, so sure Kunitz has a higher status from his years before joining the Pens, but the difference between the two at the same moment of being with their superstar teammate is the same in a vacuum. Kunitz also never came close to Hyman's production in that situation.

But Kunitz aside, I don't see much reason why someone like Bennett should make this team and not Hyman. Even of Bennett is better (hes not, but for sake of argument), Bennett is a total transplant while Hyman has instant chemistry with the best player on the team. Same for Konecny, Hagel and Cirelli really. Amazing players, but it's not like I'm suggesting someone like Crosby or Stone or MacKinnon should sit
