(You've already have made up your mind about) Zack Bogosian

Its too early to be all over Bogosian. Its been one game. Whether anyone liked his game or not, there's really not enough there to come to any conclusions unless you're already very familiar with his play, which I'm sure most of us are not.

Remember Bogosian was a healthy scratch and also went on waivers with the Sabres last year before the trade deadline with the intention to send him to the AHL, and before having his contract terminated. So we have to keep in mind and keep realistic expectations in check past on recent past history here. IMO

He ended up with TB for the playoffs as a depth addition thereafter, but previously things were not going all that well.

Bolts sign Bogosian to one-year deal

Defenceman Zach Bogosian went from having his contract terminated by the Buffalo Sabres to landing in the thick of the playoff race with the Tampa Bay Lighting.

The Lightning on Sunday announced they signed Bogosian to a one-year, $1.3 million contract.

The 12-year veteran returns to the NHL after spending the past week in limbo. The Sabres suspended Bogosian for refusing to report to the minors last weekend, before placing him on unconditional waivers on Friday.

He then became a free agent after having his contract terminated, and foregoing the $6 million he had left on the final year of his deal. Bogosian had until Monday afternoon to sign with a team in order to be eligible to compete in the playoffs.

No matter how you want to slice it, the expectations on a 6/7 d by some on here is ridiculous. It doesn’t matter what he’s paid. He could be polak making 2.5 and your gripe would then be he’s paid too much. It’s the same for depth forwards. Not everyone is a star. That’s the point
My point was not a gripe but a response to someone who said posters were expecting to much from him. I have no problem with what he brings. My point was that, that’s what you get when you have limited resources to apply to his position. We will have to wait and see how he is deployed on a regular basis. If he is mostly the 7th D and is used sparingly them no harm, however if they use him further up the lineup that will be a problem

Agreed.

Some don't like that type of player though. They will watch his every move and comment on here when he messes up and ignore his good plays. Happens every year.

It's unfortunate, because they are denying their own eyes as to recent Leaf playoff histories.

Which three teams have beaten the Leafs in consecutive playoffs (if we accept that the CBJ series was a playoff round of sorts)? Teams that are feisty, physical, and/or, focused on grinding you down (Bruins, Caps, CBJ). I would have happily have seen the Leafs play the Pens or even TB in any of these series as I preferred the match up with those Leaf teams. Now I feel THIS team is more balanced to face different opponents, while still maintaining our offensive weapons.

Leafs were built to get into the playoffs and put up personal points with some finesse. They had no response when the game was in the mud, which, like it or not, is playoff hockey. We need a physical presence and compete in the backend (and a little forecheck in Vesey too I hope). Especially as this team jells after battling game in and game out all year.

I predict that Bogosian will make a key contribution to this team. That is my hope and prognostication. You can hold me to it. The presence of these new players alone is a world of difference and seeing he and Muzzin back there on different pairings, coupled with Brodie and Reilly (who I think will be more physically engaged this year) has me feeling much more confident in our defensive potential against aggressive teams.

With all due respect to young D men, it's the toughest position to come in and hold the fort. I like how Sandin looks, I wanted him to get a chance last year. I don't like him back there when Tkachuk or Gallagher are buzzing to the net. It's that simple. You can mark my words, this season isn't going to be sunshine and rainbows. It's going to be one long playoff season rivalry before the real playoffs.

I'm not into old throw back hockey, but I trust a big, physical D man who has that ornery look game in and game out to put a player on his ass or pin a guy in the corner to help his teammates, before I trust a flashy player who is run over by aggressive forwards simply due to the laws of physics.

I think people have to give Bogosian a little bit of a break. I'm not about to say he was good in game 1. But watch some of the other games with defensemen playing their first games on new teams. Not a lot of them look as good as expected. With no exhibition games, it's tough to get too high or too low about anyone.
I mean, even hab fans getting so excited about Josh Anderson. Take a breath. It was one game.

I don't think anyone is saying that he is now a much better player since his struggles. All teams need depth. He's going to be called upon to play vs a tougher / grinding team to clear the net and stop the cycle. I don't think anyone (including himself) will be bent out of shape if he is in and out of the line-up.

Was it not Bogosian who took a bad pinch leaving Tavares back to defend a streaking Anderson?
Whats the point? these guys have not played hockey or been on ice for a long time, do you expect perfection? the whole damn team played sloppy and if not for a few carrying the torch it would have been a loss

He didn’t have strong game. That being said and on positive side, I liked how few times he was committed to hits and mtl players would just push puck forward and turn around to not get hit. Lol
That would work to essentially separate players from puck. Sure thing we don’t have that many players with that style of play. So it’s refreshing in a way.

Ideally as the younger guys take a step forward they opt to only dress Bogo against the overly physical teams. I dont think he should be dressing for a full season every game.

He absolutely helps fill a niche with the depth D, so he needs to be used, but that should be a "right place, right time" situation.

Regardless folks need to give him a few games (especially with no preseason) to get warmed up.

Are any HF Boardsters being forthcoming here? Do you have Lehtonen in your fantasy pool or something? Is that why you have crucified Bogosian for his performance in 1 game?
Otto its facepalm material on how people jump on players 1st darn game back after a long layoff and not being on ice. When your not a top notch skater you live or die by your timing and position and split second decisions to where most of our team sucked last night hence the sloppy play other than a select few, but it pains that one guy gets jumped on and singled out, man I wanna swear, just fed up with this &^%.

I can't believe your coach is playing this guy instead of Liljegren, Lehtonen (one of my favourite d) and co.

Bogo was the dumbest player on the team night in, night out for the Sabres. He refused to take any kind of responsibility for his own play and showed a terrible attitude when he was scratched.

With Liljegren and the others you at least give players with potential to be good some ice time. Bogo is an ok 7th d on his good days, on his bad days he will lose you games.

Some typical Bogo stuff: drifting out of position ending up on the wrong side of attackers, deciding to chase players away from the play, taking 15 seconds to pass and then icing it, softly pushing and showing other players butts in an effort to intimidate...

I don't see it. I think you forgot about him winning a cup.

How's your short-term memory?

Unfortunately we've just replaced Barrie with a like for like player in Brodie.
Not gonna work with Reilly that's forsure.

Why is Brodie getting shat on in here? Lol

he played great the first game, and had a bad second game. So did Rielly. It’s 1 game. Chill out.

as for Bogo, he’s a good #7. I’d rather Lehtonen get in honestly

This is a great post and you can see what he is talking about in yesterday's game.

Bogo needs his partner to carry him, but he brings an element that the Leafs lack, so he will be given a long leash.

Besides Muzzin, he is the only one that has an element of mean, and can manhandle guys in front of our goalie.

I noticed during and after the game many leaf fans were ripping Bogosian. What gives? I sort of felt like a lot leafs had bad moments last night. Bogosian didn't do anything to warrant hatred from Leafs Nation. Is it because he took a couple of penalties? I felt like he had to at times. Our defensive structure and game planning didn't quite show up. That's not on Bogosian. That's on the coaching. A lot of what I saw was rust and unfamiliar players playing together. That doesn't make Bogosian the lead scapegoat sorry. He deserves better than the judgements and blind criticism. In fact I only thought Brodie was the only player on the blue line who was steady. Every other defenseman did not have a strong game last night.
agree Bogosian played great for tampa last playoffs hes a great addition on a soft soft team, Rielly is a p***y one dimensional
