(You've already have made up your mind about) Zack Bogosian

wtf are ppl expecting from this guy ?
hes a 6th and 7th dman.

hes garbage ok , whats new ... every teams 6th or 7th guy is kind of garbage.

my issue with bogo is that he should ONLY suit up against "bigger"/"possession" teams. Teams with speed like montreal is a matchup nightmare and he should never have been on the ice yesterday.

Anyone who has played D competitively knows that if the player has possession on the half wall 9/10 times you are beat if you pinch. Maybe you do it if you are down and trying to keep offensive zone time, but in a tied game that isnt a necessary risk.

If it's a loose puck on the half wall the battle becomes closer to 50/50, in which case a proper team structure with a high C can cover for the pinch. But Bogos decision here wasnt well timed as it was an easy out to the streaking winger for the Habs player.
We've all made bad pinches here and there ... it won't be first time or last time ... JT did not do his job as a centre ... no one wants to hear that but sometimes as a big defender when you see you got backup you try to seriously demolish someone to make a position in a game

Exactly. Full control means you have to play passive.

If that puck gets rimmed instead, that’s when you pinch.

I agree he didn’t execute well (I think the two penalties were in the back of his head and didn’t want to take another one which saw him tentative) but I’m going on what we’ve seen in similar types of situations.

This appears to be what Keefe is looking for.

If Bogosian dummies that winger, I can live with it. Not only was it a poorly timed pinch, it was a soft one too.

Bogo will be useful in crunch time. He brings a physical dimension to the blueline that is needed at times.

That being said, I think we will invariably see other defencemen rotated into the lineup in his place throughout the season that match up better against certain teams.

Let's not read too much into one game. Muzzin didn't look good either last night, and it's to be expected.

Yeah it was a bad pinch as he does not have lateral skating to make move i think he wanted to when winger shifted ... it is a move not in his toolbag ... but again JT was even softer TBH ... a brutal stick check when all he had to do was ride guy into boards by keeping on his chest and play dies

As mentioned Keefe likes his defenseman to do that.. So Bogo probably made a risky place on the guidance from his coach. Whether Keefe wanted him to do it in that situation remains to be seen, but those are the kinks the coaching staff and players will need to work out through these games.

A limited camp and no exhibition games will expose these kinks more in real game time.

It was:

Bogosian isnt the fastest skater, so a he should have recognized the threat with 2 streaking Habs and backed up instead of the low percentage pinch. Thats defence 101, especially in a tied game.

Lucky Tavares recognized that and started skating hard even before Bogo lost the pinch or it wouldve been a clear 2-on-1

I think it disturbs me a little that you carry a Bogosian indictment around with you in your back pocket.

Are any HF Boardsters being forthcoming here? Do you have Lehtonen in your fantasy pool or something? Is that why you have crucified Bogosian for his performance in 1 game?

Fans wanted the leafs to get tougher, but they should have known the cost would be us getting slower.

We have a bunch of speed on the taxi squad that we might want to use though.

It's too bad he can't stop the cycle or clear the net when he's in the penalty box.

Show me someone who can?! Clearly my statement was based on him being on the ice.

This is the long game... I really don't care what he does in the 56 game regular season.

Was it not Bogosian who took a bad pinch leaving Tavares back to defend a streaking Anderson?
It's not really a bad pinch, it's bad coverage by JT. He had the support to make the pinch with ample back pressure.

BOGO was soft on his coverage for the first goal though and took a bad penalty on the 3rd.

I noticed during and after the game many leaf fans were ripping Bogosian. What gives? I sort of felt like a lot leafs had bad moments last night. Bogosian didn't do anything to warrant hatred from Leafs Nation. Is it because he took a couple of penalties? I felt like he had to at times. Our defensive structure and game planning didn't quite show up. That's not on Bogosian. That's on the coaching. A lot of what I saw was rust and unfamiliar players playing together. That doesn't make Bogosian the lead scapegoat sorry. He deserves better than the judgements and blind criticism. In fact I only thought Brodie was the only player on the blue line who was steady. Every other defenseman did not have a strong game last night.

He took penalties because he lost position on his man and had to trip and hold them. It wasn't because of our "defensive structure and game-planning", whatever that means.

I got patience and haven't written him off, but if he keeps playing like that, he can't play.

Stupid was more of the problem than speed from what I saw with Bogo.

no pre season and can't train / play (properly) prior to that either.

i'm giving everyone at least two weeks before i start to go into arm chair GM over-analyze mode.

these aren't machines. They live by the laws of nature.

It's his first game, critique him yes, but full on bashing him is ridiculous. First game in a covid year, without a proper training camp. Everyone was rusty for both teams. If he plays like that for 56 games yes go ahead and rip him, 1 bad game, get over it let him prove himself in another opportunity. We gave Gardiner like 5 years before the fan base turned on him, Bogo after 1 game ? na.

I like him. He already got that whole playoff beard look going and it's just game 1 of the regular season. Just don't take stupid penalties and he'll be fine.

not surprising, this fanbase is full of insane weirdo's that think they are the "normal" or "smart" ones.

What exactly is the point of a comment like this? Thinking Bogosian sucks isn't insane or weird. He's 30 years old and has a long track record of being mediocre-to-bad. It's not like he's a fresh-faced rookie that we should reserve judgement on.

Regardless of the eye test for Bogo, he is what we need. Physical defenseman who can stop the cycle, clear the net and chop the puck into bits.

You cannot win without that type of player, with him and Muzz we should be set. Is he better than Sandin, not in skill, but he makes the team more complete.

No team needs slow, dimwitted defencemen who take bad pinches and bad penalties. Stopping the cycle and clearing the net is worthless if you're causing goals against with poor decisions.

He will likely play the whole season and deep in the playoffs.

I´ll never understand why (some) people are already crucifying Bogo for a season debut poor game. It´s one frakking game.
Now, if he can´t bounce back from this lackluster start in the next few games, criticism will be more than valid. As of now... give the "lad" some time to get his feet wet with the season and the team.

That's what he was able to do in Tampa.

This year's Leafs are built for the playoffs. We'll see guys like Bogosian and Thornton in and out of the lineup throughout the regular season. We have a very deep team and some intriguing guys on the taxi squad who can likely shuffle in and make a positive impact.

Either a game every other night
You will need every player this yr in the taxi squad.

BOGO will take bad penalties - comes with his aggressive nature ala Polak. I doubt he plays every night and we start seeing a rotation of Bogo, Dermott, Lehtonen and perhaps Sandin.

Now Vesey.....I don't think he belongs in the top 6 but we will see.
