Is this an NHL player?

You know what number really sticks out there? 24 shots in 20 games. Over the last 3 years before this one, Zajac averages about 1.5 shots per game. This year? He averages about 1.25 shots per game.

His shooting percentage is a bit below career average, but it's not like fluky bad either. It's not like it's like 3%-5% or something.

That would be a career worst in shots per game. He does play a little bit less than last few years, a little more than 2 minutes less, so maybe the shots per 60 hasn't dropped too much. I'll have to ask somebody else that.

play him with coleman and gibbons. they can shut down top lines and create offense by forcing turnovers and attacking the net, like they showed when they were together.

he is not setting up creative plays or making the types of passes or shots that compliment johansson and palmieri. that line just hasn’t looked good at all it’s actually worse than the sum of its parts.

id do

hall - hischier - bratt
johansson - zacha - palmieri
wood - boyle - noesen
coleman - zajac -gibbons

or swap bratt and palmieri. i like zacha and wood together a lot but not at the expense of palmieri and mojo

Scratch him for a game or two to send a message, and hope he comes back better. 4th line ice time at the most, because that's all his play deserves.

i guess, hes looked pretty bad not gonna lie. sometimes you just have to drag a guy like him along tho for morale. hes a vet and been here for a while. it shows the other guys that if they slump they wont be in the dog house and that the staff has the players backs. stick him on the 4th for a few games but you cant scratch him. thats just my opinion. for all we know he could break out of the slump in the next few games.

Not put him with two of our best players and not give him PP time, that’s for sure.
I don't understand the rationale here, not one bit. Hynes can't be stupid here. He seems to know whats up regarding personnel lately. He's been loading up Cory with starts, since Kinkaid hasn't been getting it done, he finally benched Stafford after his 16 or 17 game pointless drought. And he clearly wanted to bench him before that, if team health would have allowed. He permanently banished Prout to the press box and now Albany.

He clearly knows a lot more than I used to give him credit for, but at what point does this leash with Zajac snap?

I know I called Binghamton Albany again. Did the same thing when we were in Lowell for those few years. I'll never break that habit. We've been in Albany in the AHL for the last 25 years as far as I'm concerned! Haha.

They play a more complimentary style for Zajac. So does Palms, but he isn’t himself either right now, but Mojo doesn’t fit with Zajac at all.

The rational most likely is he likes Zacha with Wood and thinks that is a good spot for him. He isn’t going to put Boyle between Mojo and Palms, and Zajac has shown good chemistry with Palms in the past.

Problem is both Zajac and Palms are not playing well so it would be wise to break them up and see if someone else can help get them going.

I’d go:

Hall-Nico-Bratt
Wood-Zacha-Palmieri
MoJo-Boyle-Noesen
Gibbons-Zajac-Coleman

Can’t have Zajac dragging down Palmieri and Johansson. 2 points in 20 games is unacceptable and he’s getting caved in possession-wise. He’s painful to watch.

I'd put Zajac in a cab to the airport and fly him back to Manitoba. Call up one of the guys from Bingo. Slot them into the line up. Move up Zacha to the second line with MoJo and Palms. Keep Boyle where he is, move Coleman back to the fourth line.

Zajac has no place on this team, and the start of the year was evidence enough we are capable of producing and winning without him.

Greene also needs to have his minutes completely toned down and have them sitting under 20 minutes a night. He is by far the worst defenseman on the team right now, and that is including Lovejoy.

Coaches lose patience a lot slower than fans do. Fans just have to accept this as a fact of life. There is going to come a point of no return at some point where Travis finally is going to get banished, maybe sooner rather than later but coaches and management can't afford to be as reactionary as fans.

The other part is it's not like Travis's hideous performance is affecting team results - YET. When it does that's when the leash gets shorter quicker.

Its time to start thinking of buying out Zajac's contract

If teams wouldn't pick up Mike Cammalleri, what makes you think they would even take Zajac's contract 50% retained? He's totally done.

you are going solely off of stats and i get it. the fact is the room needs zajac there. if its only for this year... so be it. but you dont throw a guy like travis under the bus. it will mess with the minds of every other player. this is where hynes needs to earn his money. he needs to figure out how to get the most out of him..... still keeping him involved.

That's really another stat that is worth looking at. Some people don't care about possession, whatever. But this is another first for Zajac, more new territory for him. He's never had numbers like this before in that category. He's been a positive relative corsi for almost every season of his career. The two exceptions being when he played 15 combined games in 11-12, over a few month stretch. Remember he came back in December that year, then left after a few games in early January when his Achilles (or whatever that injury was) was re-aggravated. Then he came back at the end of March for a few games.

Then in 15-16, he was a -0.5 relative corsi, which is barely a minus. This year he's at -5.3 (that's not real time, that's not counting this game). It was a bit lower as of a handful of games ago, so maybe it's trending in the right direction, but it's still a vast drop off from past years.

That's a very, very expensive buyout. You really want Travis on the books for another six years at $2 million or whatever, even when we're finally able to spend closer to the cap? Cammalleri being bought out with two years left was rare enough, and happened not only because he was cooked but because he was a clubhouse malcontent. Travis being bought out with THREE years left is not going to happen. Like I said we can scream and yell about Travis but management can't afford to be as reactionary as we are.

Our top line is dominant and will only get better

We need to figure out the rest of the group though
