From what Meltzer says the plan was always for Cody to win

They also know they are making a martyr of Cody like they did with Danielson and that it’s only going to make him more popular

I could buy it on Cody's end if not for it hurting The Rock.

They absolutely did not expect a negative response for Rock, and if they did, would've done it differently.

I literally don't believe anything they're saying now, but that's because I believe they were counting on the negative feedback. Literally no one is talking about Vince. They generated a new controversy that isn't about anything but booking and the company rather than sexual assault and TKO executives.

There isn't anything to bite? Company is still being sued, Vince is still gone and being sued and federally investigated.

There isn't anything more for a fan to do right now on that front except wait for more information.

If that is the case was it possible that Punk was actually supposed to win the RR and they audibled to Cody once the injury happened?

Apparently no, it was always planned to be Cody and they had merch ready to go out the gate for him.

Dave's story doesn't make a lot of sense, but even he admits that not everything is adding up.

Entirely possible Dave is being fed some bad info too, wouldn't be the first time.

Biting on it in that the subject has been changed and the Vince story is off of page one for the most part and now replaced by "Justice for Cody!"

I mean more people are behind Cody but he still looks like a cuck at the end of the day if the main event is Rock and Reigns lol there is no changing that if they stick with it just to turn their top babyface into a martyr.

There hasn't been any new updates on that outside of vague "more will come"

When there is a proper update it will be page 1 again

News sites are covering this story and it's all about a de facto harmless wrestling-business decision. People are talking about the WWE right now but aren't talking about Vince. That's a huge win. Silence doesn't help them distract from that story. And when "more" comes as it will, it will still have to share the publicity stage with what's going on with Dwayne and Wrestlemania.

Dave says they Dwayne agreed to a Wrestlemania program with Roman on January 3

But they didn't tell anyone, including HHH, and they just let him book the Rumble assuming Cody/Roman was the plan.

Which seems like a massive stretch to believe.

It makes zero sense because obviously something dramatic happened after the Rumble and this wasn't the actual plan.* My bet is they did agree to have the two of them to face off at Mania, only it was going to happen next year when they wouldn't even need the belts to be involved.

The simplest explanation is the only one that makes sense. They panicked and the Rock said he wanted the spot. Boom, it happened overnight.

*A federal investigation that is going to pull the TKO execs in.

Agreed. Which is why I still think there's another twist to the tale to come.

i'm not buying it. the current political climate is distraction enough. no one really cares what's happening in carnyland

Cody beats Seth for the title, shows up at ringside towards the end of Roman/Rock, and helps Roman win, gives his title to Roman and finally comes to his senses and acknowledges Roman as his Tribal Chief, denouncing the Rhodes name, and changing his name to Cody Uso

Edit : I suppose he would probably call himself Cody Utho

I have a hard time believing that:

1. They are playing 5D chess this well, that this is all expected and they had a plan going forward knowing the way fans would react.

2. They would ever do anything that would knowingly cause backlash against Rock. Maybe not the company as much as Rock. Rock is never intentionally going to do anything to hurt his public image.

If anything, it think it's possible that both are true. They planned on Rock vs. Roman, they did it in a catastrophic way that blew up in their faces, and now they're calling an audible on the fly and are going to sell it as "You should've let the story play out."

But that's the thing, I don't think they're playing 5D chess. This was a really simple and obviously not planned course correction designed to cause controversy.

I also think The Rock foolishly believes he's immune from fan backlash. (Apparently his shock at them booing him and Roman after that Rumble win didn't show hi that's not true.)

That's what I'm saying. Booking has been exponentially better since Triple H took over, but I don't think they're writing that intricate of a storyline that they intentionally booked things to f*** Cody over knowing fans would get behind him even more.

Triple H even said at the SS media regarding Punk that the company was at a point where they didn't want to go against what fans want.

I have a hard time believing they did this intentionally to get Cody over more, but what I 100% absolutely do not believe is that they knowingly used The Rock as the vessel in the politicking heel role.

I need to watch it back to hear the exact verbiage, but Seth's promo on Monday makes a hell of a lot more sense now if he knew Rock was taking Cody's spot.

Seemed like a shot at Hogan because Seth used Hogan's name... But Seth literally called it the "Hollywood" title for politicking talent 4 days before Rock worms his way into Cody's spot?

Gotcha gotcha.

I think they didn't think people would be mad at the Rock just mad at the situation (if that makes sense). They were counting on controversy, but are probably a little surprised by the overwhelming vitriol.

My bet is they figured "this will be controversial but also awesome because people will still be excited." That's why I thin the new "leaks" are trying to cover for him. The initial story he wanted to "save" Wrestlemania were correct and it's not great how bad that makes him look.

To me, the easiest way to save face is for Rock to acknowledge the elephant in the room.

Come out and cut a promo essentially running down all the reasons you want/need to fight Roman. That you wanted to do it at Mania but didn't realize how much people wanted to see Cody get his moment, you see it now, and that it's Cody's time and Rock can still deal with Roman and have his match later. Cody gets the match, and Rock then runs down all the screwy finishes Roman has gotten away with and to make sure the match is fair this time, Rock announces himself the special referee.

Cody gets the match, WWE still gets the Rock promoted as part of the Main Event, and you can still do Rock vs. Roman down the line.

That's assuming they want Rock vs. Roman as a singles match. It's still somewhat possible (Though I don't think this was planned in advance) that they want a Triple Threat so that Cody and Roman can cover for Rock's conditioning.

This is the second best way after a triple threat.

Yeah I don’t see any way the plan as of Friday wasn’t Roman vs Rock. Not just because of the segment…but because how emphatically Cody stated he wasn’t coming for Roman at WrestleMania. Any change now doesn’t rectify that problem. It will have clearly been rewritten in response to the backlash. Or they’ll live with the hate and we will get to laugh at a blown up Rock getting booed out of the building at Mania.
