Anyone thinking this is a bad deal is absolutely nuts. Yeah it’s a high cap hit for an older player. But it’s Ovi. He rebuilt that franchise along side backstrom. Absolute legend and in my opinion the best goal scorer hockey has ever seen

he’s made hundreds of millions of dollars already in his life. If things go sideways I one hundred percent just see him and the caps mutually terminating the contract and then they begin building his statue

Perrys last 40g season 13/14. He hasn't even broken the 20g mark since 15/16. It's obvious he isn't going to make close to Ovi. He's not a threat to score 40 like Ovi is, hell, he's not even really a threat for 30 anymore. He's a 20+20 guy at best now.
Stamkos is still a legitimate threat for 40g, and is also a threat for 80+ points. Him making less than Ovi sucks, but end of the day, it's 1 mil difference with a bit less of a pedigree.
Drai: 8.5 mil a year, legit threat for 40+ goals, and 100+ points. Definitely in that same pay range though.
Crosby: 8.7 mil, still a legit threat for 100+ points. Not really a threat for 40g, but good threat for 30-35 still. Again, same pay range.
Malkin makes the same as Ovi, Still a threat for PPG+, and still has an outside shot of 40g/season.
Ovechkin is still a threat for 50g, and still a threat for PPG+.

And while Ovi and Malkin are the highest paid on this list, but it's all still pretty close together. Which makes sense when for the most part, they're all in that same tier of elite talent. Ovi's contract was signed when the salary cap was the highest it's been. Ovi's contract is a little over 11% of the cap hit. Stamkos' 8.5 cap hit made up just under 16% when it was signed.

As for 40 goal scorers, don't forget about Pastrnak with his team friendly salary of 6.6 million, that is almost 3 million less than OV. For that matter add in Marchand at $6,125,000 million. Those two guys combined are just 3.3 million more than Ovie's deal.

You made a good case for Ovie being overpaid. If you look at it all the Caps stars are overpaid. Carlson 8m, Backstrom 9,2m, Kuz 7,8m, Wilson 5,1m, Oshie 5,75m. If they all would make more teamfriendly deals Caps could afford more depth in the lineup.

I think they can dominate regular season games with Ovechkin on the 1st line and still being that horse. The problem is he's 36 years old. Backstrom and Oshie are going on 34/35. It's hard to win in the playoffs with old players playing tons of minutes. It's the same group that won the Cup in 2018. They can be top line players, but there's no replacement other than Kuznetsov and Mantha. Being years older with less depth makes it quite difficult to win again.

McMichael and Lapierre are a little too late to help them.

This is madness. Malkin last scored 50 8 years ago, Perry a decade ago. Stamkos 11 years ago. Crosby 11 years ago.

Why are you comparing the contracts of players who last matched him a generation ago when contracts have moved on so much since they did it and Ovechkin has scored 50 in 5 seasons since any of them last did, it's 7 times if you count 48+!

With that contract it handcuffs them from doing what is right for the front of the jersey and more for the back of the jersey.

A lot of hot takes in this thread but I have to comment on this one.

What would take the Caps out of the picture is their 1C (Kuznetsov) not doing what he's paid to do or their goalie of the future not taking his job seriously missing time three times over the past calendar year (2x Covid, 1x ATV incident) or their other guys like Backstrom, Carlson, and Oshie hitting their age regression curves or their lack of prospect development finally catching up to them. Tom Wilson (2012 draft) is the most recent forward they've drafted. Orlov (2009 draft) is the only player they've drafted outside of the 1st round on the team.

Paying their superstar LW who always shows up and always produces in the regular or postseason a fair if not slightly overpriced contract is certainly not going to be what dooms this version of the Caps.

Also, love so many other people telling Caps fans how bad the contract is but Caps fans couldn't be happier to have #8 back for the next half decade. When he finishes his contract we'll have been treated to watching the greatest goal scorer of all time play for our team for 21 years and bring us our first (and hopefully not last) Stanley Cup. And he might have broken a record long thought unbreakable. The horror!

You are sure? Ovechkin scored 48 goals in 68 games in a shortened season and then scored his annual 20 goals in 20 games run in last season's 56 game schedule. You think he has no shot at 50 this coming season because?
