He sure does; Henrique is a better defender and utility player, while being probably 5% less of an offensive force

This isnt 2018 anymore
Henrique is not close to Monahan offensively. He is a 35-40 pter. This year is an outlier. And he is playing with far better linemates than Monahan.

I think most have fans were expecting he’d get a first. So the conditional 3rd is just icing on the cake for them

The vast majority thought either a 2nd+ or a conditional 1st. Even most Habs fans were saying a 1st would be reasonable get if it was a conditional 1st. The fact they got it out right and another conditional pick on top is a very clear win for Hughes.

Rebuild..............started two years ago.
TWO years ago.
What cycle are you talking about?

Picks for players, like Dach and Newhook? Is that what you want him to do?

I like Dach but the guy has been injured twice now. Newhook is ok I guess but he doesn't move the needle. The best thing you guys have done is bring in St.Louis.

When do you think you will make the playoffs? Next year or the year after or the year after that. Clock is ticking

Okay guy that thinks that Henrique is a missing piece in 2024
Misquoting and aversion is a form of flattery - and I for one appreciate it

I too would misdirect the conversation if I was in too deep as well; its a good form of defense used by many

The bonus for Montreal is that Hughes now has a retention spot for Allen, Evans, Armia etc that he probably thought he was going to have to use up on Monahan. So he’s going to get another asset when he moves another guy.
100% agree. None of those players will get a 1st with retention though!

Or will they??? ;)

Monahan has 52 points in 76 games as a Canadien and there are few good centers available this year.

Why are people surprised he got a late 1st?

Going rate for this kind of player as a rental at the deadline.

Yea sure
Slaf reminds me a lot of Virtanen
For Montreal’s sake hope I’m totally wrong

Virtanen? The guy who was criticized for being out of shape and not working hard?

Yeah Slaf has a lot of similarities to that. He isn't a physical specimen who is know to be a hard worker.

But even if your right, you made a statement of fact with virtually 0 data...

100% agree. How Hughes was able to escape without a condition on games played is sorcery.
I suspect Winnipeg didn't want to tie down other assets. A conditional deal based on Montreal's 2nd, that could be upgraded to a 1st or downgraded to Winnipeg's 2nd or a 3d, would tie up all of those assets. Might as well get it done by giving up the 1st outright and move on to other trade talks.

At some point you have to start winning. Winning isn't an endless cycle of acquiring draft picks. We locked up guys who had a chance to runaway, because we win.

All I am saying is you have to take those assets and turn them into players soon. Or you end up in no man's land for years and years just ask Ottawa or Buffalo how is it going

I mean, this is a much more reasonable and less confrontational take than your last post, but you're still showing some bias.

Habs have traded the 13th pick for Dach, traded a late 1st and early 2nd for Newhook, and can easily trade this pick or any of our 5 1sts in the next few years for more players.

Habs are rebuilding. They were in the cup final 2.5 years ago and lost two Hall of Famers. We don't know if the Habs rebuild will be successful, but acting like they're the Sabres or Sens stuck in a perpetual rebuild is asinine.

They are both signed for 8 years. Monahan contract is up at the end of the year. If HuGo don't improve the team before the start of next year, you might have a point but right now you just sound like a salty dude in Winnipeg

Im not salty at all. I like the trade and its probably close to being fair value for Monahan. We spent the last 3 drafts replenishing our prospect pipeline and with our current form its time to make a move again.

You fanbase seems to be in a bubble of that doing nothing but acquiring draft picks is the best thing ever mode.

I don't think Montreal has been the same since Price left and I don't think they will get out of no man's land for a long long time. If I am wrong I will eat crow but I think Dach is damaged goods with his injury history and I don't care for there amateur scouting. Time will tell.

Maybe the Leafs can reanimate Bill Barilko to help them get over this playoff hump. He scored a big goal once

Yet Chevy tied up the 3rd round pick in the conditional add. Which was totally unnecessary as the Jets chances of winning a cup are slim to none. He handcuff'd that pick for no reason when he could use it this TDL.

The Leafs?

It seems youve gone off on another tangent; it is Friday after all, can be hard to keep sharp before the weekend

Better luck next time

But the GM hasn't been doing that(stockpiling draft picks). He traded two 1st round picks in the last two years to acquire players that were of similar age to Suzuki and Caufield.

Was Monahan worth a first due to health concerns? No.

Did a GM do stupid GM things because his team is actually good and was afraid to miss out on a center? Yep.

GMs never learn
