It reminds me a lot the Lekhonen trade. Everyone was saying it was an overpayment, the habs fans were saying nobody knew his true worth, and then everyone finally saw how good he was.

There is a real risk of injury with him, but he had is lesson (pushed his body too much last year). Jets fans will end up saying it was a bargain in the end, I'm sure

Monahan is a useful player. A 1st was always going to be robbery Monahan will help the Jets.

I don't get why Jets fans hate it so much. It's a late 1st for a center that can play really well in your the middle 6. You didn't give your top prospect or anything like that, it's a late 1st to help your team win while you're at the top.

Enjoy him. He's been great here.

Jets fans as a whole were aiming higher then Monahan, so its more they wanted better and didn't get it. Personally I stated he's a plan B or C trade which sounds like he was for Chevy who was after Lindholm but missed out on him. So now Chevy better use our significant available cap space to keep adding bc Monahan isn't the big piece that gets the Jets to the final, he's a plus sure but not the single big piece. So I'm watching what else Chevy does bc if this is his only trade it was a waste of a late 1st. IMO

Monahan has been great since he’s been a Hab, wouldn’t call this robbery at all.

His stats would be better were he not playing with plugs on the 2nd line most of the time. He’s been one of our best players since he was acquired.

Still a great piece of managing by Hughes, first getting a 1st to take on Monahan and then to get a 1st back for him.
Wow, that's some good asset management, ha!

Almost as if what you read on a hockey forum from a handful of sports fans who are only speculating and giving their opinions has no actual relevance in the real world or something. Odd concept I know.
Errrrr, that's odd. That's what were were doing. Speculating and giving our opinion. But we were called delusional, mocked incessantly, flamed non-stop, and told very sternly that we're dreaming if we think Monahan was worth a 1st. So, where were you to say the same in our defense before today? Riiiiiiight, nowhere to be found. Now you don't like us discussing this, eh?

I like to think the front offices were up all night wheeling and dealing on the throw in pick.

"I'll be god damned if I'm giving you a 3rd round pick in 2026"

"What about in 2027?"

"You've got a deal you French Canadian bastard"
I have them in a staredown over that 3rd.
It wouldn't have been conditional if it had been the Habs 2nd, but Chevy blinked first after hours of staring into each other's red watery eyes .

This might be one of the worst over-priced move i can think of in a long time.

THANK GOD this trade happened after Lindholm was already acquired by the Canucks.

If this trade happened before Lindholms and it was the market setter, then Lindholm would have astronomically returned more.

Not only is it an over-payment, the Jets are over-paying for the wrong player, one of which has had major major injury concerns.
If you look closely Monahan and Lindholm are quite comparable. Both 29 yo centers with career 0.70pts/g and 0.69 pts/g with 35 pts and 32 pts this year. Lindholm has been much more dominant vs. Monahan in the last five years, but Monahan was constantly injured during that time. Last time he wasn't injured was this year (resulting in more pts then Lindholm) and in 2018-19 where he was playing with Lindholm and finished with 4 more pts.

Monahan is finally healthy this year and is playing quite well. I get the risk of injuries is high but paying a late 1st for the quality of player Monahan is when healthy is quite fair compared to what has historically been paid at the trade deadline

Weak draft too but congrats to Montreal for milking the asset.
Honestly thought montreals second would be going back, what can u do. Must have been other people interested. This draft definitely drops around 15th pick, so they must have saw little value for chevy to give up his first.

I think people are forgetting about how little cap space this move costs the Jets, who still have room to make more deadline moves.

West is stacked—
Jets-Canucks-Oilers-Dallas-Avs-Vegas

It’s going to be quite a challenge to get to the Finals with 5 teams ultimately having regrets.

For all the posters saying Chevy panicked maybe consider that the Lindholm trade actually established the market value for centers this year. As for Kuzmenko being a cap dump based on his talent and points last year it seems more likely that he and Tocchet just don't work. Based on the conditions on the 2027 3rd it's unlikely that will even happen. Jets may not be done yet either considering the cap room they will have at the trade deadline.

Yeah, they have cap and most of their futures intact. One pick that slates to be late in the first round isn't really breaking the bank IMO.

It's not that Habs fans saw the future. Monahan is a center who can play on the wing on any line and any special teams. He's been a leader for the club and a glue guy on every line he's played. Add his salary and he was an easy fit on any contender. It was easy to see he was valuable.
He won’t stay healthy and is a poor bet

Way to turn a cap dump we already got a 1st for to another 1st lol
good trade for Montreal

the consensus here was Monahan would never fetch a first and when he did, a late first is now irrelevant, these boards sometimes
In the other hand, If Monahan stays healthy he will prove to be very helpful for the jets

This kind of stupid asset management is why WPG won’t win a cup with Chevy in charge. He is the only idiot who would pay that for Monahan.
He paid what he paid because he believed that at least one other team would be willing to pay that much or more for him. You need to remember on HF we don't have the insider info as those who are actually in the business.
