I don't like giving retirement contracts to any player past 30, especially if they haven't won anything.

This contract is fine for the first 4 years but the last 4 will be bad.
How did you feel about the final 4-year contracts for Daniel and Henrik Sedin?

Their last contracts were from ages 34 through 37.

In their final seasons, their cap hit was 9.3% of the salary cap, equivalent to 8.2M cap hit next season, and 9.8M cap hit in the last year of the deals for Scheifele and Hellebuyck (assuming about 3% annual increase in the cap).

I didn't like it but the team was completely devoid of young talent so the management decided to ride it out for 4 years.

The Jets have Perfetti/Vilardi to take the reigns.

What? That is a ridiculous take. you think he should only be paid $7 million given his stats?

Good for Winnipeg, not only because It's my home city so I want to see them do well.

But also because for over a year now, ever since Matt Tkachuk left Calgary all we have heard is nobody wants to play in Canada, I think these 2 signings can finally kill that.

In reality it appears that It's just Noah Hanifin.

Good players but I think this might be a mistake for the Jets similar to what the Flames did last year with Huberdeau and Kadri. Don’t think it’s the right move for them.

Scheifele at 8.5 or Huberdeau at 11. You tell me which guy you'd want.
Helle at 8.5 as a top 5 goaltender in the league for a few years is worth this easily.

I'm not a big fan of Scheifele the past few seasons.

But there's one thing every other fan base just can't relate to. Free agents and 90% of the leagues NTC include Winnipeg as a place they refuse to go to. When your available player pool of top 6ers is forever limited to the talent you can draft, develop and retain, this is a deal you sign every day of the week.

Schiefele just had his best goal total season to date, where is the downward trend?

He had a 68 point season in a time where top end scoring is way up due to goalie equipment reductions.

Winnipeg boys could learn a thing or two from the Leafs players about how to play a complete game and not be abymsal defensively. Probably why the Leafs are a 110+ point team while the Jets consistently perform worse than the sum of their parts.

Jets have had more playoff success than the 110 point Leafs the last 7 years. The Leafs captain has pretty much admitted that they lost a playoff game because they didn’t get enough power plays because that is the only way he can score consistently. Maybe you can find a team with a better philosophy than the Leafs.

As for the signing I think that it is a fair deal. He is going to be their 1st line centre for the next 3/4 years and by then 8.5 will be average 2nd line money. It’s not like he is making 10+.

Don't love the term for a 30 year old player...but that's sort of the price of doing business with big fish UFAs. The cap hit is plenty reasonable and should remain such for at least the front half of the contract. $8.5M is easily value for a #1C in this market and could look like a steal if the cap goes up and contracts skyrocket as some are projecting in a couple years.

It's really just...half a dozen years from now, you'll probably start to regret the deal a bit. But there really isn't much of any other way to do business these days. Not if you want to retain top players like this. They all command these boat anchor in waiting sort of contracts. And Scheifele has some skillsets that should at least hold him over as fairly useful even into the later years.

Finally got his head out of the gutter and realized Winnipeg was as good as it was going to get for him contract-wise.

He needs a change, but he did the smart thing here.
