So was Wheeler the problem and Scheifele was not? At first I thought it was probably a decision to pick Scheif over Wheeler due to age, but then the Jets also signed Hellebuyck through many older years so now I'm conflicted on the Jets motive

Right and I bet both of these players could win the cup on a better team. My point though is they have already proven over the past 10 years this core doesn't have what it takes to be a contender. Hell they have barely been a playoff team many years.

I think they would have been better off selling high and rebuilding and think Winnipeg is forced to do just that in a few seasons when nothing changes and fans start rebelling like Leaf fans did.
They got a lot closer to the cup then Leafs have in the last decade.

I just don’t understand why the Jets make either of these signings. They’re a team on the decline that should be looking to clean house and rebuild. They started extremely well last season, but had one of the worst mid-season collapses we’ve ever seen. They’re not a contender, and their prospect pool isn’t good enough to turn this aging group into a contender. Free agents don’t want to sign there. The list goes on and on.

Not bad contracts for him and Hellebuyck but I just don't see the Jets competing for a Cup anytime soon. The team lost its lister a bit and doesn't sell out every home game like they used too. I think the city is getting tired of being a playoff team but not really being able to make a run. Heck they even lost their WHL team after a few seasons.

Winnipeg needs to rebuild and could of jump started that by moving these 2. They are both still great players and these contracts aren't bad , especially with the cap rising so I don't see them being a big issue. I just don't see Winnipeg really coming close to a cup the next few years while these guys are still somewhat in their prime years...

Really like these two deals for the Jets. A team is only as good as its spine. These two are important parts, that’s for sure. Elite goalie and high end RHC.

Ironically, even after trading PLD, I think the Jets are actually a better team this year at least deeper on paper than last year.

You now have Schiefele, Perfetti and Vallardi down the middle. That's a pretty strong trio of centers long term.

Interesting for sure. Not sure the immediate future in Winnipeg is all that bright, more mid pack imo, so good on him for committing.

Decline? The Jets' oldest player is 32, and the cupboards are not empty of young talent, plus most of the core is locked up for a few years. Young teams aren't really threats of decline. Perfetti, Lucius, Lambert, McGroarty, Chibrikov, Barlow, Heinola, Kuzmin, Milic, DiVicentiis keep the roster going for a long time, in addition to the usual youngish core that likely re-signs once their contracts expire.
