Would it really be the end of the world if Matthews isn’t on the team in two years?

Except you don't actually get it because they can't just move him there has to be a team with cap space that wants him , maybe check out capfriendly and figure out who can afford him then ask yourself why would he extend with that team ? Do you honestly believe a team is going to give some giant return for a 1 year rental ? Why would even a team he wants to go too give the return it will take to keep the Leafs Nation from lynching management and torching the arena when they know they can get him for free if they wait a year ? Dumbass screwed the pooch when he gave him the NMC in the last year he should have given him a NMC for the first 3 or 4 years instead but that would be smart player management and nobody is ever going to accuse Kyle Dumbass of that .
If Matthews is available there will be people willing to acquire him.

It wouldn't be the same as what you would fetch for him now, but you would be able to move him.

It isn't about other players buying in the GTA it's about players making a place their home , the comparison was that there was some alternate reality where the Leafs and Oilers would make that trade and the players would waive their protections for it to happen , McDavid has made Edmonton his home Mathews has not made Toronto his home .
To the other guy that thinks renting is such a great tax strategy well maybe go learn math somewhere because the tax rebate on his rent isn't jack shyte compared with the growth of the real estate market , in the 6 plus years he's been in Toronto his house would have probably doubled had he bought one compared with the imaginary tax benefit of paying at most 50-60k a year rent on a condo , and there's no capitol gains on a residence so that alone would have surpassed the rent expense .
Have you seen McJesus' mansion in King City on a farm lot .. of course it is not his personal residence due to tax planning reasons he is much better off in Alberta .. Matty is a tax resident of Arizona .. can you blame him? .. of course not he has a 8% state/local tax rate in Arizona vs 20% here in Ontario .. bottom line guys at McJesus and Matty tax level have $100,00/year tax pros at KPMG/Deloitte doing their tax plans . most pro hockey players can't afford these tax plans .. where thy reside is all part of da tax plan .. bottom line Matty will never have his residence in TO and it will be entirely tax driven to keep more of his after tax $$$ in his pocket

NHL is the only league that doesn't give UFA loss compensation. NBA doesn't either technically but sign and trades are so common it basically does.

NHL should get a system and base it off salary. Give extra draft picks between rounds. Which round is based on salary. The signing team doesn't lose anything.

Ie the Islanders would have gotten a pick between round 1 and 2.

I don't know who would find a problem with that. Owners like it for losing a star they get something. Players like it for more players drafted.

I would invite you to time travel back in time 50 years in my body, and then wait for another Matthews to miraculously fall in our lap again, but I wouldn’t do that to my worst enemy.

Though getting rid of Matthews is hardly a guarantee of a cup either.

A neutral assessment would be getting rid of a 60ish goal scorer almost certainly makes the team worse
Depends what players he’s replaced with.

Im not sure it’s possible to win a cup with a guy making 15 mil/yr.

It would be disappointing for sure, because he has so much elite skill. I don't think it would be the end of the world, as long as he gives the Leafs fair warning and they can move him before the NTC kicks in.

There's a thought that you can't win a trade when you move a player of this magnitude, and while it's difficult it's not impossible. A player of his level can hand you the keys to an instant rebuild while keeping your present team almost entirely intact. A smart GM should be able to obtain real depth and a excellent future all at the same time.

Lot of people seemingly cannot stomach the thought of moving him, and treat it like its sacrilegious, but I really don't think they're seeing the real potential of how rich the return could be.

The Oilers won another SC the year after they moved Gretzky partly due to what they already still had and the players they picked up.

I wouldn’t care

For a generational player, he doesn’t do much in the playoffs compared to others

Mcdavid, Draisaitl, Mackinnon all have carried their team to at least a series win whilst being dominant

Matthews can’t even do that and I don’t want to hear the excuse of team matchups, we lost to Montreal
Draisaitl was dominant 1 playoffs( if I re-call) and that was last year. Which was draisaitls 7th season. This is Matthews 7th season.

Just saw this. This standing around and laughing is not the way to go. When others are fighting it up. We've seen this even in the playoffs also..... that sight right there in the playoffs is very rare to see in general. Playoffs hockey and to just stand and laugh.

It depends on how this season goes. If they don’t win a playoff round, Dubas will be gone and changes coming. Assuming Dubus and Matthews have a good relationship which I believe they do, they might allow Dub-us to re-sign Matthews before thry bring in a new GM. As for moving on from Matthews, another flameout in the first round and he won’t re-sign it means changes to the core group and he is their biggest trading chip. All I want to see is a Leaf team that is built properly and challenges for a cup. If they need to trade any of their players to accomplish that I’m all for it.

If he does not want to stay, the server on HF will crash that;s for sure.
I think the team needs to have success this year, or he decides to go ufa and his last year in TO will be a media gong show.............more than usual that is.
If he doesn’t re-sign I’m guessing the Leafs would trade him next off season so it wouldn’t come to that.

If your GM has any brains, this is either the last season or you have negotiated an extension.

I'd need to know by the draft that Matthews is signing an extension or I am trading him at the draft. I don't wanna be held hostage.

At that point, you're rebuilding.

Matthews hasn't hit his peak yet. It would be a huge mistake to let him go in my opinion, unless he isn't willing to sign a contract extension in the off season.

Under what cap? Every year the limit of what it's possible to win with goes up as the cap does. "No one ever won with 3 11 mil players" is irrelevant considering 11 mil would have been an illegal contract the first few years of the cap. Hell McDavid's current contract wouldn't have been possible until after 2012's cap increase.

I don't see any point getting a 'haul' for Matthews, you're not contending without him so if he's leaving you may as well take one last swing in his last season. I consider that more valuable then a few more picks for an inevitable rebuild if he leaves.
