Would it really be the end of the world if Matthews isn’t on the team in two years?

Have you seen McJesus' mansion in King City on a farm lot .. of course it is not his personal residence due to tax planning reasons he is much better off in Alberta .. Matty is a tax resident of Arizona .. can you blame him? .. of course not he has a 8% state/local tax rate in Arizona vs 20% here in Ontario .. bottom line guys at McJesus and Matty tax level have $100,00/year tax pros at KPMG/Deloitte doing their tax plans . most pro hockey players can't afford these tax plans .. where thy reside is all part of da tax plan .. bottom line Matty will never have his residence in TO and it will be entirely tax driven to keep more of his after tax $$$ in his pocket
Keep telling yourself that when he is gone by the end of his current deal bud , maybe print it on a blankie to wrap yourself in . Yes they have money managers and most of them own multiple homes in multiple cities , owning a house in TO doesn't make him a Canadian resident it doesn't work that way and there is no better investment than real estate , hell even that bankrupt degenerate gambler Evander Kane owns 5 properties in 4 cities , the point was it shows intentions and his intentions don't include a future in TO .

saw it this morning and thought exactly the same thing , you don't want him fighting but he at least has to drop em and wrestle if he's going to start it and he definitely started it . The talking heads talk about McJeebus and Mackinnon but they both were willing to stand up for themselves they didn't stand around smirking like douchey looking p***yes , your teammates have your back because they believe you have theirs , nobody is under any delusion that this guy has anybody's back not even his own .

CRA/IRS are hard to deal with cannucky as they want da extra tax revenue from guys like Matty .. even my kid who is playing in NY state right now at under 100k/yr who is an American citizen (dual) has issues with CRA because he lived with me for many years and has a condo downtown TO as an investment/rented out .. going back and forth crossing borders for hockey and personal has many challenges including tax challenges .. it is much harder than you may think

I spent 11 years in Michigan married to an American before returning home to Canada I know exactly what it means to deal with both countries trying to skin a chunk off your backside . Yes his issues are from maintaining assets in Canada , even a bank account gives the CRA the right to claim you "intend to return" so you need to file in both countries .
PS keep in mind unless one of his parents was born in each country he doesn't actually have dual citizenship , Clinton changed the rules in the nineties and if he has citizenship in the US then he is a US citizen and had to renounce any claim to citizenship in any other country on his I 475 application for citizenship right after his declaration that he isn't now and never has been a member of the Nazi Party { my favorite question on the form lol } .Fortunately Canada doesn't recognize renouncing your citizenship so that is the loophole we use but technically he is an American .

Just kidding bro, I'm not the type to whine at the mods either, I do have a dark and twisted sense of the haha's and why I can't like any posts currently until sometime in the next decade or something like that, because of one of those jokes

Basically what im sayin is I'm cool

My sister in law is a duel citizen Can/US and holds both passports, she left Canada after doing her Masters in 87 so maybe she's grandfathered in.

It would be disappointing for sure, because he has so much elite skill. I don't think it would be the end of the world, as long as he gives the Leafs fair warning and they can move him before the NTC kicks in.

There's a thought that you can't win a trade when you move a player of this magnitude, and while it's difficult it's not impossible. A player of his level can hand you the keys to an instant rebuild while keeping your present team almost entirely intact. A smart GM should be able to obtain real depth and a excellent future all at the same time.

Lot of people seemingly cannot stomach the thought of moving him, and treat it like its sacrilegious, but I really don't think they're seeing the real potential of how rich the return could be.

The Oilers won another SC the year after they moved Gretzky partly due to what they already still had and the players they picked up.

I can guarantee though the majority of Oilers fans would still likely have not done the trade both then, and in retrospect though.

This fanbase sucks.
It truly does. Getting to the point where a fight in November would apparently help prove that Matthews will be able to score a big goal when the game is on the line in the playoffs.

I'm shocked there hasn't been a petition to get Domi, Belak, Orr and Rosehill on Legends Row. Matthews et al. need to go to the dirty areas and work hard in order to score big and timely goals in the playoffs. Not randomly drop the gloves for your riled up entertainment at the end of a random 5-2 game in November. Willing to bet there are even some who wouldn't care if he screwed his wrists. It would be worth it if he showed he was tough by dropping em, eh!

hockeyfights.com should suffice for those in need. My word.

I can't imagine Matthews re-signing with the Leafs. Just look at what interests him and what he does in his down time. Fashion, Bieber, rubbing shoulders with other well known people. Why would he re-sign in in Toronto when he can have all those other things much closer somewhere in California? No pressure and he can chase his personal stats in a culture where he feels more at home (nothing wrong with that).

Get used to it. Dubas squandered an embarrassment of riches and conned upper management, the fan base and media.

The only thing that changes Matthews' likely departure is a deep run in the playoffs.

Seems it’s more you have no idea what people are discussing because it’s none of this.

Rage on though

Exactly correct .. my wife born in Connecticut and still American citizen and I was born here .. he was born here so got Canadian passport and then applied for and got US citizenship and passport in early teens .. technically a US citizen in US eyes .. but Canada like you said does not renounce citizenship .. but they do make it a b*tch for tax purposes .. filing 2 returns and paying twice as Canada tax much higher .. and tracking how many days he is in US per year and how many games he played in what states .. he has a log of all his travel activities to present to CPA who does his taxes .. and CRA always reviewing and making changes and he has to fight as he has 2 accounts and a condo here .. it would be better if he did not travel to Canada at all and skipped da Canadian team way games .. my point these guys who travel back and forth and play across borders it is a true nightmare .. da tax codes really need to be simplified for hockey players, actors, musicians, etc.

Wayne Gretzky had the likes of Marty McSorley jumping in to defend him anytime an opposing player tried to rough him up.

There's nothing wrong with a star player refusing to drop the gloves. It's not worth the risk of injury.

OK I guess, but whats done is done.

Uhh, not sure what point it is that you're trying to make here, but none of that has anything to do with what Rupp was saying.

Not to put too fine a a point on it or anything, but Auston by not pushing back(not fighting, dropping the gloves) is making himself a target, he already does get into the dirty areas so it has zero to do with that part of the game.

I just find it weird that following a win, and a win where there were mainly positive steps in areas being criticized by fans, the biggest takeaway and talking point is this. To the point where it has been broken down frame by frame, looking for facial reactions, body language and the like. The whole time I was cringing, hoping he would just get out of there for the sake of his health.

Let others step in. He's a special player with a specific job not many can do at his level. Let him focus on that, others can step in.

I think there is focus on it is because there has never been any pushback of any kind from 34. Hockey however just isn't that game!

It's one thing for a 5'11" 168lb Wayne Gretzky to have a guy like Semenko, a Mark Messier, Dave Lumely and Don Jackson ready to pummel anyone who even whisperedca snide comment to Wayne and even though he had those folks in the line-up, Wayne would face wash and also denigrate opponents verbally as well as spear them if they got too close. He knew help was on the way. Geoffrey Lupul got a big surprise on night 6 of Mario Lemieux's career when a slash and a push earned him a beating at the big mans hands. Mario was a beautiful player, but he had a lot of thorns. Even Jean Beliveau Le Gros Bil "gentleman Jean" didn't take any crap from anyone. Dave Keon was a snarling dog when it came to anyone taking liberties with him and while a perennial Lady Byng candidate wasn't above de-nutting somebody who slashed him a little too hard.

The point is that while there are lots of guy's through lot's of years who've had calvaries around them, none of them just "turned the other cheek" as Matthews almost always choose's to do. You can't just stand outside of your brothers while they're a foot away fighting for you. A 235 lb guy should've picked up Konecny and dumped him on his back and that would've been the end of it, and no punches thrown.

79/80 Oilers didn't seem to have that problem because they had several players that knew their role.
